Common as the Green Lantern?

Production Weekly?s current issue has updated Warner Bros? adaptation of DC Comic?s The Green Lantern as being in active development:

STATUS - Development

PRODUCER: Donald De Line - Andrew Haas WRITER: Greg Berlanti - Marc Guggenheim - Michael J Green

DC COMICS 1700 Broadway New York, NY 10019

WARNER BROS. PICTURES 4000 Warner Blvd. Burbank, CA 91522-0001

Each sector of space is protected by a Green Lantern, possessing a power ring that uses a powerful green energy to do anything within the limits of the user?s imagination and will power. When the Green Lantern assigned to this sector of space finds himself dying on planet Earth, he tells the ring to find a suitable successor. The chosen replacement, hot-shot test pilot Hal Jordan, finds himself with a new job he never expected.

No director is mentioned in the above update, although Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Eli Stone) was attached to the project last year.

I also noticed that rapper-turned-actor Common told Entertainment Weekly at Comic Con that if he had to dress up for the convention, he would be dressed as The Green Lantern. Common, of course, was originally signed on to play Lantern in the now defunct Justice League movie. Could this just be an inside joke to fans in the know or could Common still be in line to play the character in a stand alone big screen film? The plot synopsis from production weekly lists Hal Jordan and not John Stewart as the wearer of the ring, which if accurate, would probably mean Common won?t be starring in this film.

I don't really know too much about the Green Lantern, but it looks like DC are finally going to bring more of their heroes to the big screen... How about that much talked about Justice League movie then?

(EDIT: Just read the update in the Justice League thread...)

One movie that many a comic book fan is looking forward to is a big screen adaptation of Green Lantern. Much like Iron Man, the Green Lantern has been under the radar of mainstream audiences, but has an amazing fan following. And under the right circumstances, he too can rise out of cinematic ashes and become another great comic book movie franchise. The Green Lantern movie, which is being targeted for a 2010 release, is currently on the books with ?Everwood? and ?Eli Stone? creator Greg Berlanti attached to write and direct.

And in order to get the job, Berlanti had to give one hell of a pitch to Warner Bros., as his resume doesn?t exactly scream big budget comic book movie. As part of that pitch, Berlanti enlisted the help of illustrator Brian Murray, who drew up a sampling of concept art that helped Berlanti secure the project. Earlier today, Murray posted some of the concept art to his website, MurrayStudios.com. We?ve got a sampling for your viewing pleasure below.

Just the other day I went down to my local comic book store to pick up some issues of Mark Millar's War Heroes. While there I got into a discussion with my friend who happens to be a big Green Lantern fan. He had seen that concept art that we posted a while back and said that if it got made, it would be an awesome movie. Earlier today I caught up briefly with producer Donald De Line, who is developing the Green Lantern film, and asked him for an update. He told me that "a new draft of the script came in" and they're "gearing up to start shooting early spring." While it's not confirmed, he added that "it's coming together and I'm excited about it. Hopefully we'll make it to start gate. We're really close - really close."

It sounds like as long as everything continues to stay on track, this will be shooting next year. And that means we'll definitely see that Green Lantern movie that all the fans have been waiting for, or so it sounds like. Latino Review's El Mayimbe got a chance to check out that script that was turned in recently and gave it a very positive review, saying "fanboys are gonna love the **** out of it." His version differs slightly from the one IESB reviewed a month ago as well. You can read El Mayimbe's full review of the script, but I just love this little snippet about the story and want to feature that on its own.

"The structure adheres closely to what I call - the 'superhero origin movie paradigm.' In Green Lantern's case, Hal Jordan has to overcome his selfishness and self pity over the death of his father Martin Jordan which takes place early in the script. Hal Jordan for the first 20 pages or so is a prick. The story follows the Green Lantern origin closely and cinematically speaking ? IT WORKS."i>

It's great to hear that a beloved comic book character is actually getting a worthy adaptation. It sounds like this ain't no Fantastic Four - this is the real deal and this is the real Green Lantern movie that everyone wants to see. De Line confirmed again that Greg Berlanti, of "Everwood" and The Broken Hearts Club, will be directing. I've been anxious for updates on this because I've got a good feeling it's going to be one of the big movies of 2010 and with script reviews and news like this, it's well on its way to becoming that. I know I'm not the only one who is anxiously waiting to find out who they cast as Hal Jordan. And although I'm excited now, I just hope Berlanti can do a good job with such an intergalactic concept.

Ryan Gosling as Green Lantern?

So yes the word on the Green Lantern is that it is moving along and that rehearsals should start in February for a Spring 2009 shoot.

You know who the studio wants to wear Abin Sur?s ring and take up the mantle of The Green Lantern?

From my trusted source within the WB, I?m hearing?

RYAN GOSLING

was just discussing this with friends at work.

So 2 questions here..

#1: I know in some comics GL was a black dude, in others a white guy. (And reading Rappy's first post I see Common was "being discussed first" So why the swapping back and forth? Which race are we choosing and why?

#2: What's up with the JLA movie? I see Rappy said they canceled it? WTF? Why?

To answer I hope the 2 questions, the first being I think they hadn't really thought it over at first as with all movies names are put forward and rumours are leaked etc.

The second they were finding it hard to recast everyone seeing as the Superman (Brandon Routh),Batman (Christian Bale) etc didn't want to reprise their roles for it.

Superman (Tom Welling) to make Cameo?

The ?Green Lantern? movie is rolling right along, co-screenwriter Marc Guggenheim tells us ? even if digressions about other comics characters sometimes distract them from the task at hand.

?This morning, we sat down to talk Green Lantern,? Guggenheim told MTV, ?and we ended up riffing for an hour and a half on another, much more obscure character. Sometimes, you just have to roll with it when inspiration strikes, you know? I?m sure the studio wouldn?t be happy about it, but we?re not going to blow the deadline. We?ll get it in.?

Guggenheim said that he and fellow screenwriters Michael Green and Greg Berlanti (who?s also directing the film) are on the third studio draft, and they?ve just been refining the script based on studio notes and locations.

?[The changes are] nothing that?s affecting the storyline, really,? he said. ?It?s pretty well set. But sometimes we?ll move a scene to a different location for budget purposes, perhaps in an already established location instead of a new one. It?s a question of, which locations can we live without? It?s a constant process to streamline what you?re going through, even after the film is shot, when you?re cutting things in the edit. That?s what the rewrite process is like, how you sand down the roughness of the a movie to its smoothest.?

Besides scripting, Berlanti is in constant talks with the designers such as Aaron Sims (who recently gave us a peek at his ?X-Men Origins: Magneto? character designs).

?I?ll come over and drool [at the designs],? Guggenheim said. ?I will say that the design work is truly mindblowing, and it?s hard to pick a favorite. But the shots on Oa are spectacular. What Oa looks like has never been seen on film.?

And while there?s already a lot of speculation over who would play Green Lantern ? Ryan Gosling? Matthew Settle? David Boreanaz? ? what about Clark Kent, who will make a small cameo? Will the part go to someone already established on film or television to be the Man of Steel, like Brandon Routh or Tom Welling?

?There were rumors that Tom Welling would have a cameo in ?Batman Begins? as a young Clark Kent, to meet up with a young Bruce Wayne,? Guggenheim noted. ?But you have to be careful when you do things like that, because it sounds great in concept, but when you sit down to watch it, it poses the danger of pulling you out of the film.?

But as a self-proclaimed ?sucker for a good Easter egg,? Guggenheim said, ?The fanboy in me would love that. Robert Downey, Jr. in ?The Hulk? was awesome. I love that stuff in general, and I think the fans would enjoy it. Brandon Routh or even Tom Welling [in 'Green Lantern'] would be awesome. And anything is possible. The beauty part of being the writer, though, is that I don?t actually have to make that judgment call.?

Producer Says Green Lantern Will Be More Like Iron Man

With production on a big screen Green Lantern movie supposedly starting in the next few months in order for it to make its December 17th, 2010 release date, DC Comics and Green Lantern fans are getting quite antsy. Producer Donald De Line showed up at a recent press event for I Love You, Man over the weekend, and was drilled about all things Green Lantern. The response that has been riling up fans the most was in regards to whether or not this would be like Iron Man instead of The Dark Knight. "I would say the tone absolutely wants to live in that kind of a world," De Line said. "So it's not dark it that regard."

While we already know that the story in this Green Lantern movie will focus on Hal Jordan, De Line reiterates again (via ComingSoon) exactly what they're trying to do with the character. "Our story is the Hal Jordan origin story, but creating the character of Hal Jordan that is a real character that will resonate with the fanbase is what we need to do. You have to make him credible and somebody to care about and tell a good story, and I think if we do that, we'll be okay." But is that really all that's necessary for a good Green Lantern movie? Of course not, and if you've read our script review, you know there's a lot more in there.

"It's going to be a series of big stakes and big action, but it absolutely has a sense of humor," De Line replied when asked about how much humor would be in Green Lantern. "I think people accept real life, even with really serious situations, with humor as part of that situation, as we experience in life, you have to have that. That's how people cope, so they've done it so well in these other movies. I think that people are absolutely ready. It doesn't have to fall on one side of the fence vs the other." So it seems like fans don't want to see an Iron Man-like version of Green Lantern, but De Line thinks their version will work well.

To be honest, I think it's way too early to be complaining about this. I'm going to wait to see who they cast as Hal Jordan and also wait to see what director Martin Campbell does with it, because I think the humor aspect is being blown way out of proportion. And I expect we'll see a badass Green Lantern movie in the end anyway, so why waste time complaining.

'Green Lantern' to shoot in Sydney

SYDNEY -- Warner Bros. and DC Comics' next big-budget feature, "Green Lantern," will be made at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales premier Nathan Rees said Thursday.

Director Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale") will be at the helm of the comic book's big-screen adaptation, working from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. Donald Deline will produce with a reported budget of $150 million.

Rees said the film would create about 500 jobs and include a "substantial investment" in digital effects work in Australia.

"Green Lantern" should be eligible to receive the Australian federal government's 15% location rebate on top of the incentives supplied by the New South Wales government to bring the project to Fox. New South Wales outbid interstate rivals Victoria and Queensland for the work.

"The decision by Warner Bros. to locate the production in New South Wales is tangible evidence that having a competitive incentive scheme in place returns positive results," Fox Studios Australia CEO Nancy Romano said.

The project is the latest film also to be attracted by the decline in the value of the Australian dollar.

"Green Lantern" is the third Warner Bros.-backed feature being made in New South Wales. "Happy Feet 2" is in development there, and "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" is in production by Animal Logic.

Preproduction on "Green Lantern" is set to begin in July, and filming is scheduled to start in November. Warners is aiming to release the film in December 2010.
