[Tennis] US Open 2008

Recommended Posts

Rafael Nadal will be the top seed at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career at next week's US Open.

The world number one will be followed by Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer and Nikolay Davydenko, while Andy Murray is seeded sixth.

Ana Ivanovic is the number one women's seed, followed by Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva.

The singles draws for the tournament will be announced on Thursday.

Nadal officially became the new world number one on Monday, ending Federer's record reign of 237 successive weeks.

Federer was the top seed at the last 18 majors.

Murray will be looking to overcome his disappointing early exit from the Beijing Olympics and rediscover the form that took him to success at the Cincinnati Masters.

The British number one's best effort in New York was in 2006 when he reached the fourth round.

The most notable absence on the women's side is world number six and 2006 champion Maria Sharapova, who announced earlier this month that she is missing the event to recover from a shoulder injury.

I am looking forward to Federer keeping his title.

would like to see federer come out on top, but he's not been himself lately, and i don't think he'll be much different than what we saw at roland garros, wimbledon, toronto, cincinnati, and the olympics. he's just not the same consistent self.

Same here I would like to see him at least win 1 grand slam this year, he's only 2 away from Sampras and 3 from breaking the record.

So if Roger Federer wins this then he will be back to number 1 right?

Probably not he is a fair few points around 1000 I think away from Nadal, don't forget Nadal has won pretty much everything.

Roger Federer began his quest for his fifth consecutive US Open title by beating Argentina's Maximo Gonzalez in just 82 minutes, winning 6-3 6-0 6-3.

The defending champion fired 15 aces and hammered 39 winners against his opponent, ranked 118th in the world, to book a date with Brazil's Thiago Alves.

Tommy Haas defeated 12th seed Richard Gasquet 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 5-7 7-5 6-2 win in a first-round match on Tuesday.

Haas, who is in Federer's quarter of the draw, now faces Gilles Muller.

Federer was happy with his display as he looks to win his first Grand Slam of the year after failing to defend his Australian Open and Wimbledon crowns.

"This take a little bit of pressure off me because I know a little more about where my game is at," said the Swiss star, who recently lost his number one ranking to Rafal Nadal. "I have to play more aggressively on hardcourt."

Federer, who has had a disappointing year so far despite winning Olympic doubles gold with compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka, admits he knows little about his next opponent.

"I only know what he looks like," said the 27-year-old. "I watched him play a few points on TV today. I expect him to be a similar opponent who plays from the baseline."

Awesome Win!
