  1. 1. Who should lead on Destiny?

LOL @ "We'll beam you up to our spaceship" & the Empire Strikes Back Hoth joke.

Trailer officially has me excited now. Now that they showed more than 30 seconds of dark crap. Looks amazing, and FUN. Nice to see LDP won't die in the first episode also :D

BTW, someone on Gateworld noticed something interesting about the shape of the Destiny itself: it's actually a CHEVRON. If you look on the gate in the ship itself, the symbols match the shape of the ship, making it a chevon. How sweet is that?

All im happy about is that they are actually trying something different in the Stargate universe (pun not intended), instead of being another SG-1 clone set in a different place like Atlantis essentially was.

so basically SG-1 is star trek TOS. Atlantis is Deep Space Nine since they both were "limited" to one central location and eventually they both got a ship, Defiant & Daedalus. Universe is Voyager in that they are in a ship wondering in an unknown part of the galaxy trying to find their way back home. I can't find a way to make Next Gen fit but based on this "scientific" analaysis lol, I can guess the next Stargate based series will be a prequel telling how it all started in the first place (Enterprise) and then the next one will be a story that changes everything completely and rewrites the story lol.

This isnt startrek its stargate, i dont care about the similarities between them both. As i said im just happy that its not another SG-1 clone but set in a different place like atlantis was, weir was atlantis' hammond, sheppard was atlantis' oneill, mckay was atlantis' carter, etc..

I can't wait for this :D Is this on in the UK around the same time? If so it is definetely going on Series link :p

Yes it is. Within a couple of days I think. Perhaps somebody could link to a tv schedule or something :)

It will be a bit longer then that, atm no channel has bought the rights and it will probably be sky one and it will most probably be a few weeks between the airings...unless sky see it as important like with lost then it will be a few days.

The Stargate Universe panel started much like most, with a great preview of the show that showed completely new material that focused on many different aspects of the upcoming season.

Brad Wright and Robert Cooper came out, and they introduced Jamile Walker Smith, Alaina Huffman, David Blue, Robert Carlyle, Ming-Na, Brian J. Smith & Elyse Levesque.

Brad and Robert started by pointing out that this will be the 16th season of a Stargate franchise with Stargate Universe. They pointed out that the show will have a different feel and is shot in a slightly different way.

They said that one does not have to have seen SG-1 or SG-Atlantis to jump into the show. It reintroduces what a Stargate is for those that haven?t seen it. Brad Wright tossed out a question to the audience, asking who hasn?t seen either SG-1 or SG-Atlantis. Unbelievably, I?d guess about 5% of the audience raised their hands. Brad asked them all to leave, lol.

They pointed out to us as a reminder that we saw Ricard Dean Anderson in the preview and they note that RDA will be appearing intermittently throughout the season. Amanda Tapping will also be making an appearance.

At its core, despite being a new, darker and grittier Stargate, SGU will retain the spirit we?ve come to know from Stargate.

Brad and Robert noted that the show had gotten to the point where everyone was a superhero and genius in their own right. In SGU, they looked to make the characters more identifiable show.

Brad Wright pointed out that the cast are ?convention virgins.?

They recanted a funny moment for a few of the actors: Jamile Walker Smith and Levesque had hit up the Stargate booth the previous day and the girl working the booth offered them a raffle ticket chance to win walk on roles on the show.

They were asked why they weren?t on NBC, for those who might not have access to Syfy, and Robert Cooper said they?ve been on Syfy for forever and it?s their home.

Robert Carlyle was asked how working on a TV series compares to working on feature films. He said that it?s really about the piece itself, regardless of the medium it?s headed to.

Cooper added that Carlyle plays the character with courage.

Q: What about the Furlings?

We heard a definite ?No!? from someone on the panel, but then Cooper said yes, and that they answer the 9th chevron thing.

Q: Someone asked since they?ve had strong intelligent women in the last 2 shows, what do they have in mind for this show? (Obviously, no faith yet in the fresh, young cast!)

Each actress demonstrated that they each have strong, intelligent female characters on the show.

David Blue has seen all of SG-1 and SG-Atlantis shows. Wright joked that it?s great to hire an actor they can use as technical consultant.

They were asked about the premature ending of Atlantis and why it ended so quickly.

Robert Cooper said Brad flipped a coin! Cooper agreed that there were more stories to be told but didn?t feel it was a premature ending. It was a good run with Atlantis and some shows just don?t last that long. He didn?t think ?premature? is the right word.

An attendee pointed out that SG-1 and Altantis were more episodic, and rumors say that universe will be more serial.

It?s different when something becomes serialized becuase if you miss a few episodes, you have to wonder what?s up so they?re more about having serialized character stories, the background details that are behind the story itself will be more serialized.

Nugget: They made a note about the evacuation scene that we keep seeing in previews - saying that when they dial the gate, they think they?re headed back to Earth.

Carlyle - what drew him to the role? He said that the role was very left field for him and didn?t know much about Stargate. He said it?s a character driven piece about the show and they weer looking for someone to make unlikeable things likable.

Note: I?ve only seen Carlyle on TV and didn?t not realize just how strong of an accent he has.

It was asked if the audience was going to see more non-Jaffa aliens and such.

They said that this Stargate is about exploring the universe and they wanted the experience to be realistic and they will be encountering aliens you might not find out there in space? ie: humanoid.

There will be ?alien aliens? and they won?t say things to us the way the Wraith or others would.

In Universe, characters can be both heroes and villains. In the previous shows the greater evil brought all parties together to face the issue. That isn?t going to be the case in Universe.

A sharp minded attendee asked if SGU will kill off its doctor like the other shows? Robert Cooper said the doctor dies right away, so no worries there.

It was noted that though Brian J. Smith didn?t know much about Stargate, he was a Trekkie.

'Stargate: Universe' Influenced More By 'Firefly' Than 'Battlestar'

Ever since it was announced last year that "Stargate" Atlantis" was ending after its fifth season and that Syfy would launch a new spinoff series, "Stargate: Universe," the fans have been outraged and ready to denounce the new series sight unseen.

However, based on the clips shown Friday at a San Diego Comic-Con panel featuring "Universe" before a packed room of 4,500 fans, some say this new version is set to break records in the sci-fi realm.

As creators Brad Wright and Richard Cooper explained, out of loyalty to the fans and in order to satiate the building anticipation of viewers, it was important to keep the latest incarnation contemporary and yet more dynamic. Thus, they incorporated a new style of hand-held cinematography, similar to what was used in "Battlestar Galactica," to heighten the drama by putting the viewer more on the front lines and set about reintroducing what the Stargate is and how it can be used -- while handicapping its abilities at the same time.

But it's not like Cooper and Wright took a page out of the "Battlestar" playbook, they said. Instead, they looked to two different shows: "Firefly" and "The Shield." The two said they wanted to create new layers of tension and drama, and integrate it into the regular Stargate formula and universe that has already been established over the last 11 years or so. That meant moving away from standard standalone stories and embracing an arcing, serialized style of storytelling.

The two also said they wanted the show to be character-driven and not just about encounters and alien races. In fact, they said that any aliens encountered will not be the humanoid creatures we're used to seeing.

And so it is in this new universe that they have cast the most diverse group of individuals they could to bring this multi-faceted show to life.

"Universe" follows a diverse group of people thrust into trusting and relying on each other to survive when they are attacked and forced to flee through a Stargate, which takes them to the other side of the universe. The show focuses on this conflicted and desperate group of survivors (both military and civilian) who are searching for a way to get back to Earth.

Leading the group is Robert Carlyle portraying Dr. Nicholas Rush, who is an enigma. He is the one everyone turns to as he has promised to take them back to Earth. Yet, as he explained, because there is nothing for his character to go back for, he is drawn to the wonder and thrill of discovering what is out there. This duality of purpose may cause many to question whether Dr. Rush is the villain or hero of the show.

But for Carlyle, this is exactly what drew him to "Universe." As an actor best known for his cutting-edge film roles like on "The Full Monty," "28 Weeks Later" and even "24: Redemption," he was looking for something different -- a bigger challenge, something fresh, and it came completely out of left field.

When he first got the script for "Universe," Carlyle said he asked Wright and Cooper, "Why the hell do you want me?" Their reason was simple: They wanted someone who could make dislikable things more likable. In other words they wanted an actor who was able to portray a man who was deeply conflicted that could make harsh decisions for the greater good and still be appealing to the audience.

Following the idea of conflicted and troubled characters, also appearing on the series are Ming-Na and Alaina Huffman. Both were looking for characters that were strong, intelligent women that were also deeply flawed. So when they had a chance to portray Camille and T.J., respectively, they leapt at it.

Huffman liked knowing that her character had an affair with her superior and now had to live with those consequences. In their fish-bowl existence, it is the constant white elephant in the room and it forces her to be vulnerable and to deal with the repercussions of her actions. Thus, she finds it a challenge and joy to be able to sculpt her character.

Ming-Na said she loved the fact that while her character is initially perceived as a troublemaker, she has a good heart and truly cares for others and believes she is acting in their best interests. She also understands that people want to justify what they do, and that no matter what they do or how it is perceived, if they feel it is right, they are going to do it anyway. After all, she said, "no one decides to be evil."

Also, recurring on the show is Jamil Walker Smith. He initially had a throwaway role without a proper name, but as the series developed, became much more integral and allowed to grow. On a personal note, he shared that when his mom found out that he was going to be on the show, she said, "you're going to be the next LeVar Burton."

Probably one of the more unique characters on the show, harkening back to the old "Last Starfighter" days, is one played by David Blue, an unabashed uber fan of "Stargate SG-1" and "Atlantis," and thus who's awed that he is now working on "Universe." Blue, of "Ugly Betty" fame, admitted that he has seen every single episode, and is a source of vast information to the rest of the cast on what is what in the Stargate universe.

Blue also said that he wanted to give respect to the fans and the orignal shows, and feels an immense responsibility to get it right.

Blue plays Eli Wallace, a civilian literally kidnapped off his front porch, recruited to help out the Stargate program.

A big plus for fans of the past series in the Stargate universe are cameos by Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping. Ming-Na said she worked with Anderson and that he was a "hoot" as he was peeling an orange was acting very blase about the whole thing. All the while, she said she felt the weight of his legacy to create something new and deserving of the Stargate universe.

    • The site is pretty sparse on features / tech specs. Can I plug it into a PC/hone/Switch via USB-C and use it as an external display? If so, what's the virtual resolution of the screen, the refresh rate, PPI of the image etc? Is the text crisp enough to use for coding at say 12pt? Is it good enough for playing dark games, like say Path of Exile 2? How about fast games like car racing games? Just how do they expect anyone to order this thing without giving out all this info?
