Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 - seriously bloated

Recommended Posts

Yeah, people who think everyone has at least 2GB of RAM are freaking crazy. Sure, maybe techies or people who bought a computer recently, but not the general population. Hell, I don't even have 2GB of RAM.

I can safely say every whitebox system (non-netbook etc) in retail right now is 2GB or up.

Only the very very VERY budget system configs have less.

I work in OEM land so I get a pretty good picture of what's it going out there.

As for current systems, no way one really knows. Reports can be conflicting...

yeah, now you just gotta get everyone to buy a new system..

Alright, then it makes sense to assume that current PCs have lower specs than what's on sale, correct? People drive around 15-20 year old cars because they still work or have no money. They will do the same with computers and buy only when it's really due.

I don't think this should be about the quality of beta software or the technology of memory switching, the most important point here is that article is simply rubbish that lies and manipulates the facts to make IE8 look bad.

A simple test, I've opened the same 15 tabs in IE8b2, Opera 9.6 snapshot, Firefox 3 minefield, and Chromium snapshot. a lot of the tabs are VERY heavy on flash and animated GIFs, thanks to Chrome's about:memory, it's really easy to compare the RAM usage :

Does IE8b2 use more RAM than the competition? yup. Is IE8b2 bloated? I'd say no. Does IE8b2 (with 15 heavy-duty tabs) eat more RAM than Windows XP? HELL NO WAY!

The article tries to compared the RAM + virtual memory usage of IE8 to the RAM usage of Windows XP, which is just ridiculous, and I'm pretty sure they are smarter than that, which means they intentionally played dumb for some ulterior motives.

try 15 tabs of THIS kind :

Dang!

Concerning the topic...the amount of fail achieved by the OP is epic. Truth is, I'm seriously pumped about IE8 after using Beta 2. As for Google Chrome...complete and utter letdown. It won't be returning to my system until massive improvements are made, notably in security and features.

To me IE 8 Beta 2 was a total letdown. It will not return to my system until it is final. The same with Google Chrome.
