More good news on the ghost busting front as Production Weekly is reporting that they've heard Sony's Columbia Pictures is aiming at a May 2011 start date for Ghostbusters 3, which would put it as part of their monster 2012 line-up. It was reported last month that Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky's latest rewrite was approved, with a little help from producer/star Dan Aykroyd. As of this writing, Ivan Reitman will direct with Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver returning to star. The plot is said to revolve around Dana and Peter's lovechild, Oscar, and his new found job as a "Ghost Buster".

Wait, "lovechild?" I was always under the impression that Oscar was the child of Dana and the other musician. I smell plot hole. I sure as hell hope Peter doesn't turn into a ghost.

Oscar still is.. I think Peter became his Stepfather.

Yeah. I heard this will be explained in the story.

Upon new rumors and casting calls for Ghostbusters 3 making their way online, website What's Playing did some digging through their Sony Pictures contact who may have leaked some potential casting news.
"Asked whether he knew anything about [Anna Faris] being onboard, he replied 'Dunno. First I?ve heard of it. Heard Will Forte?s name mentioned and Bill Hader, but not Faris. I?m not in on all that though, so she could be;
[sony] does like her'. " Forte and Hader landing roles alongside "Saturday Night Live" alumni could be pretty freakin' cool. Obviously, none of this is confirmed so keep this filed under "rumor" until further notice. Being directed by Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver are all said to be returning. Lead by Dana and Peter's lovechild, Oscar, a new breed of Ghost Busters are passed the torch...

Ivan Reitman Says Most Reports About ?Ghostbusters 3′ Are Wrong

Update: ComingSoon also talked to the director, who said,

There is almost nothing that is accurate online about that film? There is nothing? I mean, all these stories? there has been a ton of stuff about casting, about who?s in? none of it is true.

Asked specifically about Dana?s son taking the reins and Venkman being a ghost, he said,

Oh, no, yeah? I mean, Sigourney Weaver has a role in this movie. All the original characters have parts. As well as a whole bunch of new characters? it?s got a really good story, this one. Maybe the best of the whole series. I hope we get to do it.

Earlier this week Ivan Reitman had told fans that Bill Murray has in fact read the script for the planned 3rd 'Ghostbusters' film, well we now know this in fact to be false as Bill Murray himself has cleared this up this morning on the Howard Stern Show.

Murray revealed that he has in fact NOT yet read the script and said he feels bad about having not read it. He also talked about how 'Ghostbusters 2' turned him off about the idea of sequels; and how doing 'Ghostbusters 3 isn't even on his mind because the only reason Sony wants another movie is to recreate the franchise.

-

Howard Stern: Is it true that there is a Ghostbusters 3 and that you’re the problem and you will not sign off on this? Do you know about this?

Bill Murray: Yeah, I guess I’m the problem. Before I was an asset, [but] now I’m a problem. There’s a script somewhere [on my desk], but I haven’t read it yet.

- Why haven’t you read it? Is it because you think it’s a bullsh*t idea? In other words, Ghostbusters has had its time and you did a remarkable job with that and you’ve moved on?

BM: There’s a little bit of that. I only made one sequel and it was Ghostbusters 2 and it didn’t end up the way it was presented.

About five years after we did the first one, the clever agents got us all together in a room and… we really are funny together, I mean they are funny people – Harold [Ramis] and Danny [Aykroyd] and myself, with Ivan [Reitman] and maybe one or two other people. We were just blindingly funny for about an hour or so and the agents, there was just foam coming off of them.

They had this pitch and Danny and Harold had concocted some story ideas… and it was a story, it was good story. I think I had even read one or two [scripts for Ghostbusters 2] that Danny had rolled out beforehand, but this one was a good one. I said, “Ok, we can do that one.”

It was just kind of fun to have all of us together… I mean [Rick] Moranis, Annie [Potts] – these people are just sterling people to begin with.

- Robin Quivers: So you have no interest?

BM: Well, I’ll get to it… I gotta get to it – I feel bad. I got a message and I think people – I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings – it’s not the foremost thing in my mind, so I don’t think about it.

You know, the studio gets excited every 10 years or so. What they’d really like to do is recreate the franchise. I remember when the new Ghostbusters was going to be Chris Rock, Chris Farley and Chris Crane… Kris Kringle… someone [laughs] – that had it together.

Is it really that hard to write a good enough script to get Murray interested enough? They should've made GB3 like, 15 years ago if you ask me. Either way, I'll take a 3rd movie gladdly and I think the story in the game was good as well, that could've been done as a movie and have worked well I think.

I think his apprehension is absolutely warranted, but Ghostbusters 2 wasn't a bad movie at all. It just wasn't as good as the first. I think his main qualm is seeing the franchise milked to death, which he doesn't want. I can respect that. I'd still love to see this get made, though.

Well, since it took so long to do even a game I can't say it's really milking it. Most hit franchises at least get a triliogy IMO. I just sit back and wonder how great a GB movie would be with todays FX etc.

I meant that he doesn't want to see it milked to death -- read the last response, for example.

I consider the original Ghostbusters to be one of my all time favourite films. The only other favourite movie of mine they recently "rebooted" was Predator/Predators and I thought that movie stank.

So whilst I'd love to see another Ghostbusters movie, honestly I'd rather just enjoy the ones we already have rather than risk a stinker of a sequel.

Dan Aykroyd is still talking this thing up, and this time around he actually offers some fairly concrete plot details:

?We?re going to have to cast. We need four new ghostbusters. We need four new Columbia students. It?s based upon new research that?s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University. Basically there?s research being done that?I can say that the world or our dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width, and time, become threatened by some of the research that is being done. And Ghostbusters, new Ghostbusters have to come and some the problem.?
