Best Buy Geek Squad Interview Test

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I applied online and had the telephone interview for the geek squad at my local best buy. I am not A+ certified or anything like that but I am quite adept when it comes to PC and MAC repair what does the CIA interview test consist of should I be worried? Also I know "Best Buy SuX!!!!" and "Geek Squad is LAmE!!!!" and all of that stuff but I really just need a job right now and don't care about how incompetent they are or how they jack up prices and take advantage of people. But Thanks for the concern and all of your help

Here are some of my questions I wish they would ask.

How do you access the device manager?

How do you go about updating a driver?

How would you navigate to the windows directory from a command line?

How do you create a shortcut of an application and put it on the desktop? (had someone who did computer work for someone before me, and their idea of a shortcut to paint was Moving mspaint.exe to the desktop

How do you enter safe mode?

If Windows could not boot in normal mode or safe mode how would you go about retrieving the customers data?

How important is it that customers install windows updates?

How do you install a hard drive / ram / DVD / CD Drive.

I am assuming you're being sarcastic. Those are way too simple?

They may appear to be too simple but those are probably the most common things you'll be dealing with or be ready for... I'd think.

Nope i'm not being sarcastic. I guarantee you get some people hired that don't know that stuff.

I had one guy that wanted to have me down as a reference for his interview for the Geek Squad. But he didn't even know how to update a driver. So I told him no, or if he did put me down he won't be getting the job.

I interviewed for a Geek Squad position about a year ago and the test was cake. They were very surprised at the scores I recieved and said I had the highest score they have ever seen.

Not only that but you can tell a lot about someone on the basics. I have hired two techs in the last year and the only technical questions I asked was "How do you map a network printer" and "If someone called you and said they can't get to a specific website, what would you have them check?".

You would be amazed at how many people recently graduated with a bachelors in a CIS field and couldn't answer either of those questions. It showed me that the person had some knowledge as well as showed me how their "thought process" worked for fixing a problem.

We have to remember that the people Geek Squad is helping aren't the typical people on Neowin.

and that has to do what with the questions? :)

The fact that most of the people who call up Geek Squad know next to nothing about computers, so the questions only have to be really simplistic.

but the geek squad has to know more then the average person . Referring for when they bring the computer in.

That's what I mean, but it is stuff that most people on Neowin have known for an extremely long time.

The questions warwagon did seem about right. You just need to be able to fix 80%+ of the problems which are brought to you with the knowledge you have (i.e. instantly). So, there really making sure that you can fix the average problems which they are shown with but may delve alittle bit more advanced.

Also, warwagon didnt seem to put in any questions about finding the problems.. those questions seemed to be aimed at typical ways to fix a problem. So they may also do some roleplay questions and just prove you with a typical problem and you have to solve it (i.e. they pretend to ring you and say the computer crashes after 5mins.. and then you have to solve the problem via asking them questions/guiding them through).

with my questions I ment you better at lease know the basics. Because I bet some don't know that.

At first they tried offering me 11.25 an hour. Not sure if that is normal or not.

damn, i make about 175NOK per hour, thats about 30 US dollars per hour...man US wages are low :(

And concidering that things like gas prices are rapidly getting closer gasprices in europe, i really feel sorry for you:(

That is actually a bit high for basically a retail job that is not in management

It also depends on what the cost of living is in that area. What seems like high in some farm town in Nebraska could be below the poverty line in New York City.

LOL

I thought about applying for Geek Squad. My friend worked for it and then quit because he also said it was a bs job. I wanted to give it a try but all these bad comments have made me think otherwise. :s

The geek squad sucks imo.. I worked at geeksquad for 6 months and it was the worst excuse for a pc repair specialist shop i had ever seen.

The people who work there are idiots, they barely know anything about computers. All they do is run the geeksquad PE disk and scan for spyware.

And i was told many many times to upsell the customer even for something as simple as a lose sata cable.

Geeksquad = joke.. Those people put the word geek to shame.

/end of rant
