Urban

Architecture, people and the city environment. Search for opportunities to reveal everyday scenes in a unique way and develop an eye for the abstract and surreal. Bring ordinary city locations to life with torchlight sculpture. Try shooting urban decay. Get creative and go beyond record shots to capture something of the urban 'Hidden Britainen Britain

Pictures entered in this category should expose the real character or spirit of Britain. Take a fresh look at the familiar - document the British at work and play, capture a view that's rarely seen, or shoot a well-known subject in an innovative and distinctive way. Please note that you don't have to be a resident UK photographer to enter pictures in this category. Sponsored Action & Movement; Movement

Images that catch the decisive moment and have a sense of drama. That doesn't mean having to freeze action with a fast shutter speed - impressionistic pans or a combination of slow shutter speed and fill-in flash can deliver a more powerful sense of movement. A sporting event? Animal behaviour? Planes, trains and automobiles? There are no restrictions on what you canAnimalsAnimals

Wild, captive or domesticated - the subject's your choice, but entries should be original and striking. The judges will be looking for images with impact rather than exotic species. We're familiar with many animals so experiment with different techniques to reveal something new. Consider slow motion, abstracts and shots that show an animal in its environment. If you're shooting an animal portrait, look to reveaDocumentaryocumentary

Can you tell a story in a single frame? In this category you should attempt to portray a truthful record of a subject or event, albeit from your own perspective. Entries must be strong enough to convey the situation or story in one shot, rather than through a series of pictures. Avoid submitting images that are generic enough to fit into aDusk to Dawnsk to Dawn

This category is for images shot in low light or at night. There are many creative techniques you can use to capture the atmosphere of the twilight zone with maximum impact. Use slow shutter speeds to reveal the passing of time, mix flash and ambient light or use a torch to paint a scene. Get up earlier, stay out later and chase theLandscapesLandscapes

Inspiring views of the world around us. Rural scenes, sprawling cityscapes, atmospheric coastal shots - it doesn't matter where your photograph was taken, but it needs to capture a powerful sense of place. The location itself doesn't have to be dramatic - great light, composition and creative camera techniques can all be used to transform an everyday subject into something trulPeople & Portraits Portraits

Photographs in this category must depict the character of the subject(s) in an arresting way; get under the skin in order to reveal their personality and enable the viewer to really connect with them. Your choice of lighting and framing should bring out the qualities of your subject. All types of portrait shot are eligible, including candids, studio shots, colour and black Black & Whiteamp; White

Pictures that make full use of mono digital-darkroom techniques. Any subject qualifies in this category - as long as the image is mono (toning is also permitted). Try to use the medium to its full advantage, with rich blacks and clean whites. Use dodging and burning techniques to add drama, experiment with high-key and low-key treatments and look for texture, shaCreative Visionive Vision

The 'anything goes' category. Images entered here should reveal an eye for an original picture, whether that's through an unusual take on a familiar subject, creative exposure or composition techniques, innovative image manipulation in the digital darkroom or a unique presentation style. Or a combination of all these elements, of course?

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
