My girlfriends mum subscribes to Digital Camera Magazine and I noticed that they are holding a PotY2008 with plenty of catergorys. They recently extended the final entry date to the 31st October 2008 and I am wondering if any one else has entered?

The Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition is a great opportunity to showcase your best images, as well as giving you the chance to show your appreciation for and comment on the work of other photographers. Naturally, there are rewards for the winners?

The Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2008

The title of Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2008 will be given to the photographer who is judged to have taken the most outstanding and memorable picture entered in the competition. The winning photographer will receive an incredible ?15,000 .

Category winners

You can enter up to five digital images in each of the ten categories. The prizes for each category are as follows:

1st:

?1,000 plus a year?s free subscription to Digital Camera magazine and a year?s free membership to the Royal Photographic Society

2nd:

3rd:

Urban

Architecture, people and the city environment. Search for opportunities to reveal everyday scenes in a unique way and develop an eye for the abstract and surreal. Bring ordinary city locations to life with torchlight sculpture. Try shooting urban decay. Get creative and go beyond record shots to capture something of the urban 'Hidden Britainen Britain

Pictures entered in this category should expose the real character or spirit of Britain. Take a fresh look at the familiar - document the British at work and play, capture a view that's rarely seen, or shoot a well-known subject in an innovative and distinctive way. Images that catch the decisive moment and have a sense of drama. That doesn't mean having to freeze action with a fast shutter speed - impressionistic pans or a combination of slow shutter speed and fill-in flash can deliver a more powerful sense of movement. Wild, captive or domesticated - the subject's your choice, but entries should be original and striking. The judges will be looking for images with impact rather than exotic species. We're familiar with many animals so experiment with different techniques to reveal something new. Consider slow motion, abstracts and shots that show an animal in its environment. Can you tell a story in a single frame? In this category you should attempt to portray a truthful record of a subject or event, albeit from your own perspective. Entries must be strong enough to convey the situation or story in one shot, rather than through a series of pictures. This category is for images shot in low light or at night. There are many creative techniques you can use to capture the atmosphere of the twilight zone with maximum impact. Use slow shutter speeds to reveal the passing of time, mix flash and ambient light or use a torch to paint a scene. Get up earlier, stay out later and chase theLandscapesLandscapes

Inspiring views of the world around us. Rural scenes, sprawling cityscapes, atmospheric coastal shots - it doesn't matter where your photograph was taken, but it needs to capture a powerful sense of place. The location itself doesn't have to be dramatic - great light, composition and creative camera techniques can all be used to transform an everyday subject into something trulPeople & Portraits Portraits

Photographs in this category must depict the character of the subject(s) in an arresting way; get under the skin in order to reveal their personality and enable the viewer to really connect with them. Your choice of lighting and framing should bring out the qualities of your subject. All types of portrait shot are eligible, including candids, studio shots, colour and black Black & Whiteamp; White

Pictures that make full use of mono digital-darkroom techniques. Any subject qualifies in this category - as long as the image is mono (toning is also permitted). Try to use the medium to its full advantage, with rich blacks and clean whites. The 'anything goes' category. Images entered here should reveal an eye for an original picture, whether that's through an unusual take on a familiar subject, creative exposure or composition techniques, innovative image manipulation in the digital darkroom or a unique presentation style.
