Changes due to feedback on Neowin 5

Recommended Posts

Uh, I did read the initial post.

#1: I was replying to Tech Star's Post.

#2 :I used the <> button and it works.

That rectangle with save, copy, print...should not be there.

Is mockup had the expand button in it, I don't see what your problem was...

Regardless, IMO the ad is best where it is. The mockup with the Neowin promo images to the left just pushes real news down the page even more. Someone visiting the site for the first time would see 2 or 3 news posts, and then it seems like it just stops. In the sidebar with the ad, Around the Web gets ignored (and the past few days have proven ATW to be a valuable addition). The ad is staying, and I think it's best where it is.

We spent months laboring over this design for you guys. We've looked into the alternatives, and I seriously think we picked the best one.

Well said. I love the design and congrats on the great design! :)

It isn't wasted space... it is for wide screen monitors (Y)

Like Neobond or Timan said, we (Neowin.net) can NOT cater to everyones resolution, and liking. Somethings you'll have to live with it and deal with it.

Sorry Gary7, but your not neowins top priority, or did I miss that memo?

I do not have a problem with it. For the second time I was only replying to Post # 114

I suggest that you read the thread.

Whoever did this did a fantastic job. I can't wait until the Forum is done.

The question really gary7 is what do you want in that wasted space?

If you use the <> there is no wasted space. I like it as is.

Read what I posted.

I don't like it  the top menu is overly "busy" and doesn't really flow

Sorry lylesback2, but your not neowins top priority, or did I miss that memo? :)

is there any way to go back to the old theme ?

I dont like the new page because its too cluttered trying to do too much. What I mean by that is the left and right hand side trying to display stories (i preferred the large news boxes) and I miss the recent forums news feed.

I'll have to agree with my fellow Canadian. I didn't like the layout at first, but it's been tweaked and has now grown on me. So instead of wasting my energy whining about the front page, I'll just focus it on the forum conversion.

- Added poster info and comment count to main articles and Around the Web

- Increased spacing between articles, so it doesn't look "cramped"

- Added toggle option to increase the width of the site

- Added padding around the articles so they appear less cluttered/tight

- Fixed PM indicator back to red and centered the number (applies only to less than 10 unread PM's)

any way to make this a setting or toggle-able in our control panel instead of just being cookie oriented?

it's going to suck clicking that button every time i open / close my browser and for others whenever they log off

Well I'm going to have to leave Neowin on the blacklist then. I really hate to do it, but that one ad is just far too obtrusive. I find it pretty sad that you're not even willing to consider a compromise that would have made everyone happy.

The day I start raising hell is when Neowin implements a 'splash' page as so frequently seen on other sites, where you must "click here to continue, you'll be directed to the site automatically in X seconds, but PLEASE subscribe to remove this!" And of course when pop up/under ads are implemented.

Until then, a square box in the page's center isn't really that irritating, to be honest.

True, it could be worst...

I love the design right now (I don't mind the ad at all), BUT for all those that don't like it what about this:

That[s similar to what i suggested earlier in the other thread.

From my example it that i [very] crudely did just before, (with a slight addition for a button to hide (or minimize the bar into a smaller text only bar that would just say the important details) the news doesn't seem to push down all that much, because don't forget there won't always be a "important post" on there being displayed. And i believe my example also moves "around the web" up so its more visible. And it still keeps all three ads.

edit: i should at least include said image.

win !

its the ad box in the middle that puts your eyes off the whole layout (the square one with a news item next to it). This is what it should look like ! please implement this idea, the news story next to the ad just doesnt look right.

+1 by all means keep that ad all that I wish is it is moved to a less retarded place.

Not trying to sound rude/smug but I think if someone is visiting a tech news/community site they will know how to scroll down the page to see the rest... or am I giving the interwebians too much credit?

Anyway, I love the design as it is, yes the ad is annoying but nothing I can't easily get used to. MartinDTanderson's design is an alternative that I'd like to see considered, as it keeps the ad centered unlike other mock-ups which put it to the side, thus defeating the point of having that ad where it is (more money). Maybe a user poll on a few of the mockups that staff think could be viable without breaching ad placement rules already in place etc? Just a thought.

Either way, can't thank you guys enough for the hard work in designing and implementing this new layout, and then responding so quickly and satisfyingly to most of the requests. :D

Incoming stupid question:

A width matching flag/button (which doesn't really work it at should, no info is displayed and it doesn't really mark it's current state {maybe because it's cookie based?}) was placed in the upper right side... where it was previously was placed a web feed icon.

My question is: where did that icon go? And if you're relying on the client to retrieve the web feed(s)?

    • Alien Isolation 2 will bring a new protagonist and setting, watch the reveal trailer here by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Only a few weeks ago, Sega and Creative Assembly dropped a teaser for a new Alien Isolation. Today at Summer Game Fest, Alien: Isolation 2 was officially announced with a new trailer while also confirming a whole lot of information about the setting of this survival horror project. Check out the reveal trailer above. Leaving behind the Sevastopol space station, the sequel will take players to a remote colony world. With a Xenomorph (or more) on the loose, players will be navigating both the surface of the weather-ravaged planet as well as "the claustrophobic confines of the Weyland-Yutani outpost of Kurosaki Station." Interestingly, Creative Assembly is leaving behind Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Alien's Ellen Ripley, as the protagonist too. While it hasn't confirmed a name yet, players will be taking the role of a new character for this new adventure. The setting is also being described as a new hunting ground for the Alien. This will have players improvising and developing new tools to aid in their survival and escape, all to avoid "cinema’s deadliest killer." "It has been over a decade since we created the original Alien: Isolation and I am so excited to show everyone the first glimpse of the sequel," says Al Hope, Creative Director at Creative Assembly. "Our dedicated Survival team at Creative Assembly has been working hard to create a new, evolved Isolation experience continuing the legacy of the Alien franchise, making the eponymous killer smarter, the environment harsher and the chance of survival slimmer." Promising the same deadly tension from the original from over a decade ago, Alien: Isolation 2 is in development for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. A release date has not been announced yet.

    • Hello, From looking at the screen shots in your motherboard's manual at https://endownload.colorful.cn/EnDownload/MotherBroard/2022/Intel 600/Manual/Intel 600 Series BIOS English/Intel 600 Series BIOS User Guide.pdf, you go to the ADVANCED option at the top of the BIOS (UEFI) menu, then select SECURITY in the list of options on the left.  From there  you can enable and set the Secure Boot mode. • Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is getting a simultaneous release across PC and all consoles by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Square Enix showed up to the Summer Game Fest presentation today with multiple trailers showing off its next chapter in the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga. The final chapter of this trilogy now has an official name too, with it being dubbed Final Fantasy VII Revelation, following up Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth from recent years. Vincent Valentine, Cid, Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and more showed up in the trailers as they battle against enemies, or 'Weapons,' from the final chapter. "As the world teeters on the brink of annihilation, the final battle against Sephiroth begins," says the trailer description. "A meteor mars the sky, monstrous planetary guardians wreak havoc across the globe, and the fires of war rage. Now, Cloud and his companions must stand against this chaos to not only decide the planet's fate, but bring a legendary conflict to its conclusion." Following the reveal trailer, the show also dropped some gameplay footage that shows off a new way to travel across the open world using the Highwind airship. Players will be able to swap characters on during battles, use tactical mode to synchronize with allies, and summon their entities. Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine are joining the party this time too. “FINAL FANTASY VII, first released in 1997, has been beloved by fans for many years and has since become a “legend” in its own right," added producer Yoshinori Kitase. "The FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Series that began in 2020 with everyone’s passionate support is finally reaching its climactic finale with FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION. The story’s final destination represents my emotions spanning thirty years working on this title" One of the biggest revelations of this announcement, however, was the multiplatform release confirmation from the get-go. Square Enix will be releasing Final Fantasy VII Revelation across PC, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 in Spring 2027 without any timed exclusivity programs.
