GTA IV for PC (official)

Wow, it feels like a completely different game. I wonder why the user only has 476MB used for resources. Is it because of 1024x768 resolution or because his textures are set to medium? I cranked up everything, set the resolution to 1920x1200 and did not play with sliders and ended up with ~900MB. Fortunately, I have a 1GB video card to handle it. I'll try that the next time I'm in the mindset of playing GTA IV. I'm currently burnt out and jaded about its gameplay.

Masked Forever: I also bought this in the Steam sale for ?4.99.

I'm more concerned that it's wasting 15GB of my disk than anything else :|

The first time I got it running I cranked everything up highest, got literally 1FPS, maybe even less. After going into Task Manager and back into the game it started running at around 20-30FPS, that's in absolute highest... I dipped the settings down low and the game was still jerking loads when I swung the camera around, really badly optimised!! (i5, 4GB, GTX260 for the record).

...Updating it as I type, hopefully won't run so bad afterwards.

I also have a GTX 260 (Core 216) and 4GB RAM, but I believe my Core 2 Duo 6750 is seriously holding me back. My performance in this game is poor. Upgrading to a Core i7 would be very costly though, as I'd need to reply the motherboard, processor and RAM :/

Updated via Steam...

I've found shadows can really screw things up, and at one point (with shadows off) I could look down one road and it would be slick 60FPS- then down the next road... 1FPS -_- was amusing watching the animations in extreme slow motion.

This game fails so hard, I wish I never bought it! XD

Wait a minute. All of your systems are more powerful than mine. What's going on here?

Here's my system:

Gateway P-7801u

Core 2 Duo 2.26Ghz | Nvidia 9800m GTS 1GB | 4GB DDR3 | 2?320 GB HD

17? 1920?1200 |Windows 7 Ultimate x64

How are you guys having worse performance than me?!

We won't be. Definitely not.

Couldn't agree more. Rockstar Games totally ruined this game for PC with the useless stuff they added (Steam+Windows Live+Social Club, pick one already), horrible performance, nasty SecuROM+custom DRM and idiotic console-like controls. :(

I must admit, I didn't get good performance out of the game with my Core2Duo E6750 @ 3.2 GHz and HD 4870 512MB. It was decent, but not good enough for me. It's what put me off from playing the game.

Ditto. I'll play again when I upgrade my processor, hopefully sometime this year.

I could overlook the performance issues if Rockstar threw in some more of those hilarious television channels and shows for the television in Niko's/Roman's apartment as part of free DLC or a patch.

I get about 25 - 30 FPS with the framerate sometimes dipping into the teens, so I could live with it if they considered what I mentioned above.

Here's to hoping GTA5 will scale well for current hardware and older hardware..

That's a long way off, yet.

for those who dont know -

GTA IV Tweak for extra FPS

Download contig.exe file and place it in your GTA IV directory.

Then create a shortcut desktop and have a commandline at the end( -s) and it should look like this:

"X:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\Contig.exe" -s

http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=381536

Contig is a single-file defragmenter that attempts to make files contiguous on disk. Its perfect for quickly optimizing files that are continuously becoming fragmented, or that you want to ensure are in as few fragments as possible.

Download link: contig.exe

Note for Win7 users : use "Run as Administrator "

That won't do anything...

The game seems to run well on my system. That said, i downloaded the patch first.

AMD CPU AM3 Athlon II (245) Dual Core 2.9GHz

2GB DDR2

ATI 4650 1GB

On my old machine it ran terribly lol

AMD 3700+ 2.2Ghz

2GB DDR

Nvidia 6600GT 512mb

I enjoy the PS3 version i have but i've always preferred gaming on the PC. Unfortunately though i've lost the manual for my GTA IV game which means no serial, which means no Saving which means ANGER!

    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.

    • Yes for me, I installed 'old calculator' (Windows 7 calculator) in its place since it is more useful to me. I think paint is the only one I left installed
