Evolution?

There's no reason why humans don't live in cabes cooking on a campfire apart from that times change and people move on.

If I wanted to, I could. There's a very big difference in that. In fact, some people still do cook over a campfire on a regular basis, and people do live in caves.

And people can still use XP or Vista with the Classic Menu turned on.

Update: This does not provide the classic start menu from Windows 95,98,2000. I tried it. Windows Server 2008 R2 does still have the old start menu I understand. Some third-party app will come out to provide the classic style start menu in Windows 7.

I wouldn't mind the new start menu if it had a few tweak options, like not having to use a scroll bar for "All Programs" if your list was too long. I have a 30" monitor and I can only see a handful of entries under all programs without scrolling up. In any case I use and old program called Panekiller which happens to still work on Win7, to invoke a WInXP style start menu in a few different ways so I can have the best of both now.

I just downloaded this, and am ready to register it already. However, the option to invoke panekiller instead of the start menu doesn't seem to work for me. Did you have to do anything special to get that to work, or do you just not use that feature?

Also disappointed about the removal of the start menu here. I service about 700 users in our corporation and about 40% of them prefer the classic start menu style. This will be something to be considered when it comes time to consider migrating to Windows 7. A definite problem.

You can fix the start menu more if you like.Right Click start menu, click properties, customize there you can set to display as menu.

I agree with your opinion. But alas, the classic start menu will not be in the RTM.

It's not the same as the classic start menu.

Move away from the past and embrace the future, which is Windows 7!

Honestly, the Start Search function has been improved in Windows 7 from Vista and I use it now as a means of launching a program quickly and easily.

Well, they are trying really hard to push some of the new features such as Jump Lists and searching from the Start menu itself, both of which would be really awkward to implement with the "classic" Start menu. By removing it, Microsoft also cuts down on overall support calls because everyone using Windows 7 will be using the new Start menu, support agents will not need to guide a customer through different steps dependent on the Start menu style.

Lies. They are trying to force a new paradigm of little icons that point to a .exe file or a URL. BFD.

This is simple UI fascism, and its ultra annoying. Its the first thing I looked for and its one of the few things there is to complain about.

I too find no "classic" start menu in Windows 7 very annoying.

however, does anyone know how to automatically show All Programs by default when opening the start menu. clicking All Programs everytime is so freaking stupid.

I wish they would make it the full width of the menu, much like search is now.

40% < 60%

case done.

i would really love to work in ur corporation since u are so devoted with the employees there...

"A definite problem"

lol

do you know how annoying it is to scroll down that tiny list on a tablet PC?

no not really, i have a tablet pc and i don't find it annoying at all.

that is, the few times i do need to scroll through it...why are you scrolling down the list in the first place?

Uhmmm... did you not notice the following at the top of the page:

Compatibility: runs under Windows 95, 98, ME, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000

The software hasn't been updated since 2001, basically, and I seriously doubt it'll ever work with Windows 7 considering all the GUI changes that have been implemented.

The old Start Menu is basically gone... when will people get over it and move on...

Start menu search! Use Windows as it's meant to be used (which is usually default settings) and after a while you will notice it goes fastest. Microsoft's Research department isn't as lazy as you might think it is.

I agree that Instant Search is far superior to the older method of using the Start menu. But, it's hard to change the behavior of those who've been using Windows since the 95 days, a long 14 years ago.

    • Apple CEO Tim Cook confirms looming price hikes due to memory shortages by Hamid Ganji Image via Apple Memory and chip shortages have led to significant price increases for electronics over the past year, and it seems that more hikes are on the way for upcoming smartphones and computers. Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company is planning to increase the prices of some of its products due to the ongoing memory and storage shortages. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook confirmed the looming price hikes for Apple’s future products, adding that “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable.” He also said the company is doing its best to “mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.” The Apple CEO also noted that the allocation of a large portion of memory chips to AI companies has contributed to shortages in the market, resulting in lower supply at a time when demand for devices remains high. “We definitely need memory pricing and supply to return to reasonable levels for consumer products. That’s the bottom line,” Cook said. Cook also added that Apple is ready to use its vast cash reserves to help boost supply in the market because additional production capacity is needed. While he declined to specify how Apple plans to do that, he said the company will not build its own memory and storage factories despite its financial resources and silicon expertise. Cook did not provide further details on the scale of the price increases or which Apple products would be affected, though iPads and Macs could see higher prices sooner than other products. Apple’s next product launch event is scheduled for September, when the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone. It remains unclear whether the upcoming iPhones will be affected by the price increases, but given the current memory shortage, higher prices seem increasingly likely. There is currently no clear timeline for the end of the memory shortage. Samsung, one of the world’s three largest memory chip manufacturers, recently said the shortage could persist for several more years.
    • Downloads does not equal actual usage, even less when the app is pre-installed in some Galaxy phones.
    • +1000 to this, don't understand why they added that margin around the top bar, even the close button is a PITA to click without aiming. Ofc, this is just preview and hopefully they will revert such odd UX decision before hitting final version.
    • so the people who bought this will get a refund?
