whats a good software to create a new partition in vista?

Vista has a build in basic partition tool although it does have its limits especially with your system partition.

To use it go to: Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management

If that doesn't work out I usually use 'Acronis Partition Manager' because it works perfect with Vista.

Don't another software to do this. Just open the start menu, search for "computer management". Then when a computer management windows is opened, there will be an option on the left side for Disk Management. This is where you can shrink your current vista partition and create a new one with the used space.

well I'm quite amazed at the amount of software hardware Windows 7 supports OOTB, it loaded at native resolution, reacts to my stylus fine, has wireless, has sound, and even reads from the card reader.

keyboard shortcuts don't work natively and the fingerprint reader doesn't either, i'm installing the drivers right now to see if they work.

EDIT: that should have said "hardware"

Indeed. The only drivers that I need to hunt down that aren't included on Windows Update are my touchpad drivers. Anything else is optional for extra features (for instance, Sigmatel/IDT's audio drivers that allow remapping of the laptop's audio ports).

I finally got my audio working, it was my fault all along being an idiot... I havnt used this laptop in such a long time i thought it had AC'97 where in actual fact it was the HD drivers i needed to install... Thanks for the help.

is it best to set the new partition as logical or primary.

(my main OS will be vista and im gonna dual boot w7 on the new partition)

Still downloading, 60% done (damn you 3mbps suppose-to-be-5mbps limit!)

Did you guys choose 32-bit or 64-bit? I went ahead with 64-bit just for the sake of it I guess since I won't be running it as my main OS. I'll just see how things run and look like and I don't think today I'm running any legacy code that wouldn't run on 64-bit but as long as I don't have 4GB of RAM, I see no benefits in going X64 as my main OS even for W7.

Actually I was thinking of dumping it in one of the currently free extended partitions in my current HDD but I'm not sure about it.

In most cases, it won't make a difference. But in some cases, like mine, I could only install my ATI driver if I am using the primary C: drive.

If this is merely your first time doing this, I would just install on a separate partition for now.

As I have posted to this topic before, if you PM me I can send you a direct link to the original file downloaded from MS "7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULFRE_EN_DVD.ISO" located in my VPS.

I can send the link to limited number of people. This server has 100mbit connection and located in Germany. If you are having problems downloading from Microsoft you can use the link that I am talking about.

i got my key and will spend tomorrow installing windows 7. i think i will run it in virtual machine so i dont have to go thru the hassle of running it as a main os

Remember if you run Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine AERO effects will be disabled.

you really can't beat installing this on a Hard Drive.

You don't have to (and you definitely shouldn't, actually) run Windows 7 as Main OS. Just run it as dualboot. There's a few guides, already out on how to do that.

That aside, am I the only one that felt that I should have Seven of Nine as wallpaper, to commemorate this beta?? XD

well, i'm going to run it as main OS and I know a few others are too. It's the best way to find bugs.

Plus, why use Vista when you can have all the 7 goodness?

If anything major does happen, I can always troubleshoot it with the one I'm on right now.

I find this kinda interesting even though the Sidebar was removed and the gadgets can be placed anywhere there is still a 'sidebar.exe' that runs (just look in task manager).

I think this is odd, I would think they would rename it to something like 'gadgets.exe' or run the gadgets with their own .exe names.

    • LosslessCut 3.69 by Razvan Serea LosslessCut aims to be the ultimate cross platform FFmpeg GUI for extremely fast and lossless operations on video, audio, subtitle and other related media files. The main feature is lossless trimming and cutting of video and audio files, which is great for saving space by rough-cutting your large video files taken from a video camera, GoPro, drone, etc. It lets you quickly extract the good parts from your videos and discard many gigabytes of data without doing a slow re-encode and thereby losing quality. Or you can add a music or subtitle track to your video without needing to encode. Everything is extremely fast because it does an almost direct data copy, fueled by the awesome FFmpeg which does all the grunt work. Features Lossless cutting of most video and audio formats Losslessly cut out parts of video/audio (for cutting away commercials etc.) Losslessly rearrange the order of video/audio segments Lossless merge/concatenation of arbitrary files (with identical codecs parameters, e.g. from the same camera) Lossless stream editing: Combine arbitrary tracks from multiple files (ex. add music or subtitle track to a video file) Losslessly extract all tracks from a file (extract video, audio, subtitle, attachments and other tracks from one file into separate files) Batch view for fast multi-file workflow Remux into any compatible output format Take full-resolution snapshots from videos in JPEG/PNG format Manual input of cutpoint times Apply a per-file timecode offset (and auto load timecode from file) Change rotation/orientation metadata in videos View technical data about all streams Timeline zoom and frame/keyframe jumping for accurate cutting around keyframes Saves per project cut segments to project file View FFmpeg last command log so you can modify and re-run recent commands on the command line Undo/redo Give labels to cut segments View segment details, export/import cut segments as CSV Import segments from: MP4/MKV chapters, Text file, YouTube, CSV, CUE, XML (DaVinci, Final Cut Pro) Video thumbnails and audio waveform Edit file metadata and per-stream metadata Edit per-stream disposition Cut with chapter marks Annotate segments with tags View subtitles Example lossless use cases Cut out commercials from a recorded TV show (and re-format from TS to MP4) Remove audio tracks from a file Extract music track from a video and cut it to your needs Add music to a video (or replace existing audio track) Combine audio and video tracks from separate recordings Include an external subtitle into a video Quickly change a H264/H265 MKV video to MOV or MP4 for playback on iPhone Import a list of cut times from other tool as a EDL (edit decision list, CSV) and run these cuts with LosslessCut Export a list of cut times as a CSV EDL and process these in another tool Quickly cut a file by its MP4/MKV chapters Quickly cut a YouTube video by its chapters (or music times from a comment) Change the language of a file's audio/subtitle tracks Attach cover art to videos Change author, title, GPS position, recording time of a video Fix rotation of a video that has the wrong orientation flag set Great for rotating phone videos that come out the wrong way without actually re-encoding the video. • Doesn't even need a UI for point 2 - use some sort of JSON/XML container - because MOST users won't even bother.
    • Legit concern or publicity stunt considering this is the first time I'm hearing the name?
