CAIRO shell Alpha test begins January 15th 2009!

Question

just thought i would let people know that the countdown has begun over at http://cairoshell.com/ for January 15th for the Milestone 1 Alpha test of Cairo shell. If you are asking how do i know that the countdown is for the alpha its simple i read it on their forum

Link

Honestly i think that this project has great potential however it has taken them a long time to get where they are (even though they did lose all their data a while back)

I cannot wait until there is an open beta or the final release i think it will be great.

^I don't know, they have posted a few screens of a mock up and a video (I think) and then only let you into alpha IF you have donated (5$ usd - I believe) AND are selected. (not sure how they were selected)

They also have a feature page that says this - "The problem with much of today's interfaces isn't that they don't work, but that they don't necessarily work for everyone and don't provide the best experience possible. With Cairo you can transform your desktop from the dated Windows user interface to a brand new system that will change the way you use your computer forever. Taking advantage of proven functionality, and with stability and performance in mind, the Cairo Desktop system aims to give users a productive and easy to use shell that advances current technology standards."

Not sure what all of that means, but I believe development started in late 2006/early 2007. From the screen shot it looks like a Mac theme for Vista, but I'm not sure how old the concept shot is. More shots here and here. I can't seem to find the video.

This project has drawn attention from Shell Extension City who named it to their Top 20 list @ #20 - "20. CAIRO..........A Windows Shell Alternative. Cairo is a revolutionary desktop environment for Windows. The goal is to develop a desktop experience that increases productivity and advances current technology standards. With a focus on stability, performance, and productivity, Cairo is sure to turn a few heads. No betas are available yet, but they're coming soon. Sign up to be a tester before the release is widely available.....(free).....GO THERE!

Seems much ado about nothing at the moment, the alpha Milestone 1 may change that.

lolz...someone will sneeze and they'll lose all their data again...someone might want to tell them to stop storing all their data on floppy disks..ssd is the new poo

Their data was actually "Stolen'

One of the guys left and took alot of the data with him. Because it is done by folks from around the world, and not all in one room, he had a large chunk of stuff on his computer he was working on.

When he left he refused to give the other guys the work he had done, and there was too much of it /too complicated the way he had done it to re-write it.

So they started again.

as he said though, they should be keeping their code in better places. An svn server sounds like a good idea for them, then there's no way to "steal" data

I wonder what happened to that stolen data, how it ended up being used, etc.
