CAIRO shell Alpha test begins January 15th 2009!

Question

just thought i would let people know that the countdown has begun over at http://cairoshell.com/ for January 15th for the Milestone 1 Alpha test of Cairo shell. If you are asking how do i know that the countdown is for the alpha its simple i read it on their forum

Link

Honestly i think that this project has great potential however it has taken them a long time to get where they are (even though they did lose all their data a while back)

I cannot wait until there is an open beta or the final release i think it will be great.

Cairo Milestone 1 has officially been released to testers.

So what's so great about this shell? What is so great about replacing important Windows files that are most likely to give problems once Windows updates or another service pack is released and replaces those shell files?

This is nothing you can't do with WindowBlinds.

Yeah so Cairo is just something you use to make Windows pretty...NOT, Cairo is a shell-replacement for Windows.

i wonder if this is an actual video of it. Wasnt the code stolen? so they had to start from scratched or whatever (lol) so it could be totally different now? or what?

It is not a real video, if it was, it can't be the current codebase since it is just a menubar and a taskbar right now. The explorer portion will be added in a future release.

Got something to hide? Like the fact that it's a piece of crap?

How about Microsoft wanted to hide their betas, just like the developers of Cairo do to, just like any developer, they need it tested for bugs, and they don't want something like press or media saying its a piece of trash because its buggy and doesn't have an explorer, it isn't complete!

Yes because only "selected" people who donated, not all of them, got access to the tester program.

I posted another article about cairo on winsider btw.

Cairo Milestone 1 has officially been released to testers.

Wow? Really?

Yeah so Cairo is just something you use to make Windows pretty...NOT, Cairo is a shell-replacement for Windows.

Yes but it does NOT replace explorer's files, hence ability to upgrade.

It is not a real video, if it was, it can't be the current codebase since it is just a menubar and a taskbar right now. The explorer portion will be added in a future release.

Correct again.

How about Microsoft wanted to hide their betas, just like the developers of Cairo do to, just like any developer, they need it tested for bugs, and they don't want something like press or media saying its a piece of trash because its buggy and doesn't have an explorer, it isn't complete!

Here is my real rant.

If microsoft wanted to "hide" their betas, then how come the pre-beta was given out? The Alpha?

Ill copy this from my blog :

Tbh, I dont understand the way the developers are going. They release an ALPHA which works ok, and they want no-one to leak screenshots because it might have some ?bugs? which might put people off and give them a bad rep.

This is completly absurd!

First, its a god-damn alpha! Of course its going to have bugs! Why the heck wouldnt it? If it didnt have bugs, and have all the features, then it would be a fully fledged release!

Second, people in Neowin are bugging me for download links and screenshots (before the last post) because they actually wanted to CONFIM that it wasn?t vaporware because, no one has seen a screenshot BESIDES the ?concept screenshot? which WOULD give the wrong impression because it has the explorer in it! If they put a screenshot of it in action instead, we wouldn?t have these problems instead!

Why ruin a perfectly good program, give it a bad rep because the only conformation is ?yep it ixists!1!!!?? You could AT LEAST release screenshots (screenshots! I mean, come on!)

If you were worried someone was going to copy it, they would have to start from SCRATCH so it wouldn?t be the same, and cairo would still release first!

This is really absurd.

Yes because only "selected" people who donated, not all of them, got access to the tester program.

Ill copy this from my blog :

1) It is clearly stated on the "private alpha" section of the donation page that you only get access to the current M1 build if you donated on or before Jan. 5. If you did so and did not receive the alpha, e-mail us and we'll fix the problem.

2) Guess what? That's EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. It leaked, people are going "ZOMG it has like 5 features and is buggy and is vaporware even though it's not vapor LOL" and if it hadn't none of that would be going around. Of course it's slim, it's our FIRST ALPHA. Of course it's buggy, it's our FIRST ALPHA.

Then they should stop praising it being the next best thing since Jesus' third coming. Because if the screenshots show all there is, they're making an awful huge ruckus over a couple of hours WPF hackjob. A piece of crap with lipstick, while asking for money the same time. Get the **** out!

A software leak is as inevitable as death itself. Anyway, I think they should release a preview to the public. Perhaps then they won't have to "beg" for donations with nothing to show but mock-ups.

now (finally) leaked to Demonoid & ThePirateBay

... and to eMule ... however I wonder where's the problem here ...

Dudes, you aren't going to make money with it however, and while it is declared to be an Alpha version, it should be clear that there are some serious issues in it (yet)...

<snipped quote>

Dude stop trying to defend the non-existing credibility of this project. They are just seeking hype building stupid "secret-ware" testing effect but when someone goes against the grain they start writing stuff like you just did. Just release it publicly and be done with it and be quiet. If the project spent less time screwing around with this sort of stuff they may actually get more done.

As for others seeking this i guess which he's ranting about here: http://rapidshare.com/files/186736985/cair...921565.exe.html

Who the **** said I was JustDC?

I didnt want to "prove that I was l33t", I just put out some screenshots? Wow? Seriously "grandpa Finnius", why dont you stop flaming on neowin, and actually get a life? Also, who the hell told you I was JustDC.

I know you are reading this...get a real life....get off the computer

Sorry, but unless im wrong, you posted that comment with your computer, why dont you do the same thing? Oh thats right, you posted comments on there saying to suck borats c***. Wow! Im so amazed at your lack of maturity! I dont go around on cairo boards, and flame? And I dont have 1,214 posts on a board for a program thats almost vaporware, and lots of people wanted screenshots, so I posted them!

get your grades up (sheez, I have seen them...nothing to be proud of)...DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR LIFE.

Unless you call being year 10 in music while im in Year 8 not being good grades (not to mention getting at the end of year 8 things, or start of year 9 grades) not good grades, then, I dont know what are good grades ;)

Why dont you just get over the fact that I posted a few screenshots showing it in action? Did sam tell you to do this?

I admit I tried the torrent version, it crashed immediately. However, though, I only tried it because I am a donator but I never got my email for the official download, so I'm feeling a bit bummed.

Ouch, if only could get a refund

Ahwell, don't sweat it... some people just take things too personally. Imagine project managers at microsoft acting in a such a way :p

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
