i need a firewall / antivirus for 7 beta !

Recommended Posts

thanks for sharing.

I tried MS recommended Norton 360, it kinda... sucks... especially in terms of inward firewall controls

will try out ESET

Hi there, I use ESET Smart Security Beta 1 and it works flawlessly on my x64 system :) It's not free but it is a good solution ;)

Does seem that you build confidence in ESET. I have Norton, but did use Corporate edition cause it is so... unproblematic, like a Stinger missile and shoot and forget - install and it will work in 4 years! :D

however for 7000 I personally don't need antivirus but more concerned with how much M$ might collect from computer... thanks, mate!

Yeah, norton is a goddamn resource hog, I seem it didn't change in the three years I used it the last time :) ESET is small, fast and efficient ;)

I'm using Free Avast! even though I have paid subscription with AVG including their Win7 preview build. AVG has been slacking on the performance end lately and adding too much bloat. Avast is almost like it not even there.

I've hear great things about Avira and Nod32 although they aren't free.

well i need free solutions. i found out avast will work but i need a firewall !

Sometimes it's best just shelling out the money. I've tried most of the free anti-virus software out there and haven't been impressed by it. And a firewall isn't important, especially if you're behind a router, as the built-in firewall does a good job - it's actually been improved in Win7 over the Vista version.

For all those using ESET (Smart Security, particularly); did you do anything special to get it working? I did an upgrade of 7, rather than clean install (I know, probably a stupid idea), and upon boot ESET's firewall wouldn't enable. I've since tried to reinstall ESET (both 3.0 & the 4.0 beta) and every time it asks me to show it the directory of the .msi install file. When I point it to it, it always says it's corrupted... Any ideas?

Privacyware distributes a free host intrusion prevention program called Dynamic Security Agent. I don't know if it works on Windows 7, but it does work on Windows Vista. Since this is not a firewall, but a host intrusion prevention program; I don't know if it's what you're looking for. For the anti-virus program, have you looked into Grisoft's AVG? Grisoft offers a free anti-virus program only for home personal non-commercial use.

ESET has nice e-mail scanning, anti-virus control (well, NOD based, reliable). but their firewall sucks, I might be mistaken but I dont see flow control (outgoing/incoming). I think it does offer attack protection, but that is it. Plz correct me if I am wrong.

The reason I need proper firewall like Outpost or ZoneAlarm is to prevent Win7OS communicating on its own with 'someone', just makes me sleep better

Kaspersky, my favorite AV, has a (free) Technical Preview for Windows 7. However it has made me bluescreen a couple times. I suspect it has something to do with connecting to my NAS. I uninstalled it.

It works fine so far for me. However, I've heard you'd better turn off "Update application modules" in the settings under Updates, as it can cause problems. I've turned it off, and it works without problems.

You're wrong. Complete control over UDP,TCP,Ports In and Out, etc. I'm using the free Beta 4.

I don't like Kaspersky's preview for Windows 7, it is an outdated beta version of the corporate product. Updates are not uploaded to the server as often as the stable release product.

I have a 3 user 2 year licence for Kaspersky and I use their home product 'Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 (8.0.0.506) on Windows 7 X64 and it works perfectly. No slowdown, no issues, no BSODs, absolutely error free :)

Depends, Norton AV 2009 or older? 2009's build is actually really good. Symantec redesigned the entire app from top to bottom to ensure resource hogging would never happen again.

If you don't believe me, try Norton AV Gamer Edition 2009. Runs like a pro. I personally never liked Norton because of the lack of efficiency but I have to admit, 2009 is a total improvement.

I now use KIS8 because ESET was troubling me with no alerts or anything; which I hate in an AV. I searched up porn just to see if ESET would pick up any cumbersome trojans/adware, and nothing. Unless you run a full scan, ESET does nothing apparently. (for me)

im using avast home and windows firewall and defender aswell as the firewall in my router it all works great avast feels like it's hardly there..

others like sNorton and Mcstuffies and kraptinmyeye are just to bloated and hoggish

My Jaws just dropped and i went into sleepless nights for 15days when i tried the trial version on Windows 7 which worked flawlessly without using Vista compatibility mode and not even experiencing a single BSOD . They have reallllllllyyyy improved Norton but its too late and many people have experienced serious pain in its previous versions and wont change their opinion.

Hi guys, I am new to this forum, but I want to share my little experience with Win 7.

I am using KAV 7.0 with no problems at all. I know it's a little old, but it does the job nicely.
