jesus, i like those announcements. =)

too bad it only comes out in summer. but maybe thats great because developers will have apps out and running that support the new APIs by then. so i guess its a good thing. =)

Gotta say this was one of the best updates to an already shipped device I've ever seen. Over 1000 APi's, Developers can make there own Accessories for there Applications (Finally). Stereo Bluetooth, 100 new Consumer features. Just a huge amazing update in all respects.

I wasn't expecting it to be this good really. I have an iPod Touch 2G 32GB. I can't wait to get the new 3.0!

Nice updates. Little annoyed at the no appearance of Background Apps, but their explanation is more than fair enough.

I disagree. The manufacturer shouldn't decide if background apps at the expense of battery life should be allowed or not. That decision should be left up to the user. It's like buying XP for a laptop and MS saying background apps on battery aren't allowed because it eats up the battery quicker. I think this is a really bad decision.

Searching mail messages (including imap), searching for a program to launch that's located somewhere in your 8 homescreens, search for a specific song/video you want to play, etc.

curios does spotlight search the contents of documents or lyrics for mp3's u have in itunes ? or is there and ability for developers to create plugins to search there formats? (like Adobe plugin would index the contents of pdf's on your mac)

That's where jailbreaking comes in. While I agree with you, most people aren't smart enough to know better. For the general population, they made the right choice. If they allowed it, you'd have tons of people reporting how bad their battery is because they didn't realize they left multiple apps running. Besides what do you really need to run in the background that its push notifications can't do for you?

Also forgot to mention spotlight for emails, finallly, and landscape mode is nice. Hopefully it will let u switch with the keyboard active, that always annoyed me.

Lots of overdue features, quite the nice refresh for both consumers and developers. However I'm still ****ed they have left out voice dialing. It can't be that hard for them to implement it. What's the hold up?

He did say there is 100 new Consumer features. We don't yet know the full extent of those.

I'm thinking it'll be a plugin architecture. There's no other real way to search throughout all the apps, unless Apple has locked people out. Which I'm 98% sure they won't.

I'm guessing they'll let you search through iTunes based on artist, album, etc. Most people wouldn't search by lyrics. As for documents, they are hosted through other apps in most cases, so I think they'd be through an API.

This is true, I would hope it finds it's way in there. For such a basic feature I was surprised it was left out for so long. Even if they restrict it to headsets only I'd be happy. 3rd party voice dialing apps are so trash, I want something native.

I was just reading the backlogs of Engadgets coverage and it appears Apple has unlocked the Bluetooth chipset in the iPod Touch 2nd Generation. It now supports Stereo Headphones and stuff like the iPhone! - Before this the Bluetooth in it was only used for connecting to Nike+ devices and it wasn't even mentioned that it was Bluetooth technology. This is huge for VoIP among other things.

that was fast

seriously though, i dont understand how the first iphone cant support MMS. its obviously not a radio thing since almost all non 3G cell phones since what.. early 2000's have supported MMS ?

but they are paying for a service (phone service) while we are not

They are either paying a premium for more service than they need or more money for the device, either way, $10 for touch owners can arguably be a "value".

like that is going to help :(

i personally have 1st gen iphone and never once did i need mms. i prefer to send email with pic.

I understand but... I'm not saying I want stereo bluetooth because I know there's a hardware limitation but MMS, the first generation can do perfectly. Jailbroken iPhones do it. Apple is simply lying.
