Windows explorer - Status bar...

oh, without a doubt its a waste of space, I can't believe someone in MSH approved/s a design like this, its horrible, either remove it all together or add information. damn!

I'm guessing Windows7 works the same way as Vista. To see the information you want to see in the status bar (size in folder, files, etc) you actually need to highlight the files. Yes, it kind of annoys me to, i use Vista.

So, a lot of times i just have to 'ctrl + a' to select all.

I right clicked on it and it gave me an option large/medium/small - I selected small - nothing happened - wtf. Also the new explorer needs more right click functionality - lost of places do no react to right clicks. :(

i get what your saying but in windows 7 microsoft is making it more of the idea you no longer have to go look for your stuff but more that it is right in front of you so havening the information ya want while good is not useful anymore and is useless and beside that why should ya worry about HDD space if you got like 1TB of it he he

Dude...I don't get why you keep replying, despite the fact that you have absolutely nothing useful to say.

If you don't have any ideas on how to remedy the situation, then I believe you ought to limit yourself to one fanboi reply per thread.

I completely agree. They are killing the status bar, and its a damn shame. A very useful feature in XP to know the total size of selected files without other bs.. and they didnt even put anything else on it instead!

and how is it not useful i would like to know as it does exactly the same thing you want but at the same time can provide more informations by the means of Meta data .

Picture it. You're in windows. You're moving files into a given folder. Ya wanna keep track of how big that folder is getting...you simply glance at the bottom of the page. It could not be easier...and it is not easier in 7, which begs the question...why remove something like that..??

Replacing it with something better, is fine. But replacing it with...nothing, is moronic...

Added right-click functionality has been added in the latest build 7057.

One of the largest things that bugs me in Explorer 7 is that there's no space usage total when entering a folder like there was in the old NT5.x status bar. A simple line like "24 Items, 43.1MB + Subfolders" would suffice, with the size linking to a properties window to total up the subfolders. Even more perplexing is how when you select 16 files or more, the space usage isn't totaled automatically (you have to click "more details"), and selecting a folder causes size to disappear from the details pane entirely.

Why are people having such a hard time understanding Rickkins' request?

He does not want single or grouped file sizes.

He does not want "the statusbar back"

He does not want to replace the details pane.

He wants the current free disk space of the currently explored hard drive to be displayed in the details pane when browsing the drive in explorer.

This won't be redundant information because the only way to see free disk space is by either going to "Computer" or going to the drive's properties. The information won't be displayed on the "Computer" window because you're not exploring a particular drive at the time.

This could easily be displayed in the details pane where the other old statusbar information is currently kept, such as file sizes, file counts etc.

This was one of the features I missed when I upgraded to Vista and have since gotten over it, but would gladly like to see if back in 7.

Humm... interesting. I always just turn off the status bar in everything, from IE, Firefox, to Explorer.

It just looks out of place to me.

Jokes aside though,

Enabled the status bar in Windows 7 earlier...it only displayed the items, but there was small bevels/borders/bumps on it at some places, indicating that it should show more information?

There was less of it? I mean the organize / new library / view toolbar / get help toolbar - it ain't right clickable and it would be nice if I could customize it a bit.

The status bar should have an option to make it smaller at the very least. Yes/No?

Right you are. Because asking that the "new and improved" version of windows not lose a piece of functionality that the "old and in need of improving" version had is so utterly impetuous.

I too would like to see more info here .. seems to be wasted space when you are 'drilling' down into sub-folders .. all you get is the folder icon and how many files ithere are.

Yes, wasted space indeed. It would be better if it said:

16 items

12.34 MB in total

Perhaps even with "Disk free space: 34.56 GB" as third line.
