well I guess that solves the mystery of how they were gunna start naming their new consumer bodies since they're starting to run out of numbers (D40 50 60 80 90 100 200 300 700).

I'm not gunna lie, I thought D5000 was an April fool's joke (I've been gone from the internet since April 2nd traveling).

interesting camera, however i think getting d90 would be a better choice.

Yes, it would be. But it would also be a more expensive choice. The Nikon D5000 is in between the Nikon D60 and D90. It's meant to compete against the Canon 500D.

I think they will drop the 2 digit naming all together. There are still D10, D20 and D30, however I don't think they will use it. Instead they will merge the D90 and D300 lines together and use that to fill the gap between 300 and 700 as DX cameras. Continuing from 700 to 900 they could only FX series. And the new 4 digit series.. well, with that they can go any way and do whatever. Be it D3000 or D7000.

But to be honestly, 4 digits sounds silly to me. And why 5000. Why not 3000 or 2000. :s

the difference between bodies is only $200. if its worth it or not...only photographer can decide :p

so is this a competitor to the Canon 500D?

yep. funny that their name is very similar :p 5000d vs d500

soooo... what's the difference between the D5000 and D90?

4FPS vs 4.5FPS? af-s only vs af? No CLS vs full CLS w/ built in pop up.

That seems to be the only differences I can see.

You can check out a comparison of it between the D90 and D60 here (scroll down). Aside from a lack of an in body motor and 0.5 less fps, I don't see much of a difference. In fact, I think I might buy this when I get back into photography. I had the D90 at one point but I'm not too worried about the lost motor and 0.5 fps.

much larger/brighter viewfinder

Huge factor in usability for any camera. As much as I love my D50, I can't go back after being spoiled by my D200s viewfinder. I refuse to look through a D3/D700 viewfinder, I might just have to buy one. :o

I think the bad viewfinders are just Nikons message to us saying: stop using manual focus.

I'm disapointed they're getting away from putting motors in the bodies. I have a lot of old lenses. Even if I was new to dslr I would get one with the motor for the extra flexibility in lens selection.

You should be happy that Nikon still supports F-mount lenses from 50 years ago. Surely, on some entry-level cameras you won't be able to meter or auto-focus with such an old lens. But the lens will mount and you will be able to shoot photos in Manual. Canon on the other hand changed the mount in 1985, meaning if you had a load of glass before that date and wanted to shoot with the new technology, you had to sell all your glass and get the new one to accommodate the new bodies.

    • They've told outlets who got review units that it isn't. Partially because they believe that contributes to closed ecosystems. GamersNexus also believes this is because Valve's fighting a monopolistic practices lawsuit in Europe right now. They've also never subsidized any of their past hardware efforts and well, they definitely aren't subsidizing the Steam Deck right now.
    • How do you know they aren't at least partially subsidizing it?
    • (macOS) Screen zoom was broken for me in beta 1 and it's now working properly in beta 2. In terms of performance and UI design/consistency, these betas are already much better than Tahoe.
    • Less powerful than a PS5 at twice the price! I wonder if they use that for marketing? Totally DoA.
