Even if the RC keys won't work, who cares lol??

You could use it for 30 days, and the RTM is expected in 2~3 weeks.

btw, 7279?? lmao

as long as you have a rtm key that is. In fact as a technet subscriber, only rc1 keys are posted so far and I'm not sure how long it will take them to post RTM and keys once it goes gold. Could be weeks out for all we know.

In that case enter the DOS command [slmgr.vbs -dlv], if you find on the script "remaining number of re-arm=3"(translation from Chinese, something like that),then you could assure yourself that you are able to run it for 120 days totally legit.

The only keys that will work for legit activation with 7264 are RTM keys which no one really has, period, end of story. The few people making claims about using RC keys and getting it working are basically lying about it.

I'd hate to get warnings, so only giving out this screen-shot, done by the well-known work-around.

That "thread" was one single post so, I can't see how it is "more useful."

But my statement made earlier is still correct: there are no legit methods of activating 7264 without an actual proper RTM key - workarounds don't fall under the "legit" heading...

I just gotta wonder: who the hell bothers to activate their installations of beta/RC code anyway? I mean, since most of us do tend to reinstall quite often, especially in periods where an OS is close to release and the beta/RC builds are flowing like honey, so to speak, who ever goes more than 30 days without a reinstall anyway?

I've probably installed Windows 7 a total of 2500 times so far since last August with all the builds and all the machines I've used it on... I've only activated it 3 times, the rest just get reinstalls < 30 days for a variety of reasons, usually because of a new leaked build.

The rampant fascination with activation just completely stumps me...

thats why RC/beta keys are still working on 7260 right? think before you write please :o

im sure some people want me to apologise, but oh well, my bottom line with this post was "if RC keys did work in first win7rtm branch build, there is no reason to assume they dont work in "next" win7rtm build until its proven otherwise". But ye rc keys dont work anymore :) Just saying that people shouldnt jump to conclusion without any facts, all we can do is assume according to previous expiriance(build) in which they did work :)

One reason to activate would be if you wanted to download a particular application directly from Microsoft, something like DirectX, this often requires the system to pass a Genuine advantage check to proceed.

I'm quite sure the OS will pass this validation check if it's not activated...that's how Vista works.

Why activate anyway, just use rearm if you need to between builds. Anyway, RTM will be here within 2 weeks or so.

I'm running 7260 unactivated and I can download anything I want, the WGA stuff is irrelevant if I use IE - it only flares up when I attempt to do the download with Firefox where it requires me to do that stupid download of the code generator.

Activation is not a requirement of downloading items from Microsoft because they themselves still allow it with that ActiveX applet (only applicable to IE, of course).

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
