Here's my wish list:

  • Even better performance scaling
  • An OS-wide interface for applications (UI consistency)
  • Built-in features like disc image mounting, media file conversion, etc
  • A new method of "installing" applications that doesn't take up time ('live' applications)

I like your suggestions. The only one I'm not sure about is UI consistency for applications that you install. I like seeing what ideas developers come up with for the UI of their applications and I think that only be nurturing this creativity will UI design continue to adapt and improve over time.

I think my favorite and most wanted feature for any future OSes would be NEW font smoothing technology. I don't want ClearType or GTK or even the mac smoothing, they should work on something new, this isn't 2001 anymore. :]

Kind of like DirectWrite? This is in Windows 7 and Windows Vista supports it (With DirectX 11 installed).

Thanks. The UI consistency doesn't have to be aggressive. I don't want to see my programs with XP-style loading bars and installation icons from Windows 95. I like the way it's done in Mac OS X. The programs blend in well and it doesn't stand out at all with minor inconsistencies.

Now that Windows 7 is out and I know many of you are using it, Microsoft is most likely working on SP1 and gathering ideas for Windows 8.

What is 1 feature or technology you would like added or changed for Windows 8?

To me the #1 thing would be the included ability to mount ISO images.

No need to reboot after installing anything. Reloading DLL on its own, would be awsome. As for your wish, you can achieve that easily with free virtual clone drive.

Forgot if I posted my wish list here but I've got some ideas:

  • Completely scalable taskbar (any pixel height)
  • Multi-monitor support for taskbar (span across multiple screens)
  • The ability to move applications to and from any location and have the registry reflect those changes (eg. hold down a certain key while moving a file/folder to another location would trigger this)
  • The ability to snap windows to any edge even with multiple monitors
  • A repository system for applications (auto-update many applications at once, similar to Linux)
  • The ability to mount ISOs

Most of these things others have probably already mentioned. The registry idea to me would be really cool.

Yep, I just don't get it. In XP gifs were working great. What the hell happened?

Features don't exist by default, someone has to actually make them. The Photo Viewer is not the same program as was in XP. They didn't remove the support, they simply never added it.

How though? How do you reload (by which I assume you mean update) a DLL that is in use? You can't, you have to wait until everyone unloads it, and with many components (due to the modular nature of Windows) this simply never happens.

i think that is terrible idea

1st it would make superbar messy

2nd Microsoft is going to get sued for antitrust/anti-competitive practice ===> cant see that happening in another word

A few minor ones, but one that's bugged me forever and I really can't stand it

Control Panel Interface

It's a mess, and I find it completely inconsistent with every other folder presented to me by the OS. I hate categories, I don't want to decipher what the programmer/comittee decided would be a good grouping for things, why is there no interface with "icons with text underneath", not to the side (with single click to open them(why is this part single click, every other icon in a folder is double click), no other folder on my computer presents data to me like that, why is control panel different?

Oh and while you're fixing that, can I have easy access to "Network Connections" back please?

Scale the task bar - its a bit chunky in 7

More control over Explorer tool bar positioning - even if it was back to XP standards

Explorer - We have so many files now, its about time explorer started recognising this and adding more detail, and some tabs like in Internet explorer.

As much as I dislike the stardock/Neowin collaboration, Stardock have capitalised on the hardware improvements that have made things like Fences seamlessly integrate and improve the OS - something Microsoft should have recognised years ago.

As i mentioned on this forum in other topics, a unified notification system that would be consistent and customizable to the needs would be nice. More thematic customization would be nice (3 glass colors and 2 wallpapers are not what i call customization)

I don't feel it's right for people to replace explorer.exe and patch uxtheme to apply other styles to windows.

mybe they should provide "Custom view" for control panel this way you can organize it the way you went. :)
