Ding Ding Ding, and we have a hardcore opera fanboi! Do you like work for Opera or something?

Sorry to burst ya bubble but in marketshare opera comes in at like 5th - FACT Which also must mean it rates LOWER in yes you guessed it DOWNLOADS

http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=0

So yer im guessing that it is you sir who is very ignorant.

And those people just click on the blue "E" that stands for Enternet.

No, it's absolutely the opposite of imposing. The user should have alternative choices, it's about that.

Again people do have a choice but we should not be forcing them to choose they do have the freedom to seek an alternative internet explorer is just a tool to get on the internet you can then use other means of accessing

In this case, browsers have to follow a certain criteria to be listed in the OS itself. IE8 already comes installed with Windows, the user is just presented with an alternative that he can just ignore.

Its asking for to much windows and internet explorer come together as one package

Imagine if you built a program that would use a library you built to do certain things wether its connecting you to the internet or just handling some data processing, then having some ******s called the EU telling you that hey its not fair that your program is using your library...we don't want things to work that way you have to give people a choice to use other libraries or we'll sue you for a gajillion dollars

i mean what were you thinking? you can't make practical decisions for your software to compete in the market thats just crazy you have to be a wet blanket and let everyone join in on the fun even if its your program

/sarcasm

Why do you say the GPL license is "crap"?

And no... That's not the way it works for Free Software.

Because i've had enough bad experience with it

the code is usually crap and the last one i came across pretty much said

"Hey i'm going to be a real **** you can either buy a licenese for me or you can use me free but now you're program which is far superior then this crummy library needs to become open source aswell HA HA HA"

mentioned nothing about my software being free or not good thing their library was useless and there were better, free, unlicensed alternatives

GPL has to be the biggest scam to date they pretty much take existing free libraries tweak them a bit slap on a gpl and now if you have anything similar to it they'll cry **** from their sockets and will go all sue happy its just a big joke

Again thats from my experience :p i don't mind giving credit where credit is due but these guys take it to far

also @ sirgh0st

hmm i was going to say "why do you hate the term fyi?" and started coming with a reason why its not that bad...i couldn't i then proceeded to picture some retards saying each letter like

"EFF WHY EYE I PUKED THIS MORNING"

i can only stand it when they atleast say the full word "for your information" but yeah the thought of that now makes me want to hurt someone thanks sirgh0st :D

Users do have choices, just like I have a choice to buy a Ford or a BMW or download Firefox, Chrome or Opera.

That does not mean that Toyota should have to also let GM get on their advertising budget because Toyota has a better market share in the US!

Opera Software more than doubled its profits compared to the same quarter last year. The overall revenue growth was something like 60%. Opera Software does not need handouts. However, dishonest Microsoft shills will always misreprestent Opera's position because that's what they do.

Microsoft has fooled a lot of ignorant children. They have apparently also paid a lot of people to spread lies on their behalf. Quite pathetic, really.

Yet another blatant lie from a paid Microsoft shill.

And yet another lie from a paid Microsoft shill. The fact is that Opera is the #3 browser worldwide. In Europe Opera is not only the #3 browser, but its market share is higher than Safari and Chrome combined.

Either these people are paid Microsoft shills, or they are insanely ignorant.

Using vague phrases like "Doubled Profits" means nothing. If their profits went from $5 Million to $10 Million, that would not be as impressive as a company increasing their profits from $150 million to $250 Million. Not Doubling, but an increase of $100 Million in profits is more impressive then just $5 Million

This is the thread that made me hate the rm FYI. this guy would just not shut up. Kind of like opera is doing here with all this bull**** with microsoft.

Hahaha i saw you're post that thread is brilliant Just FYI it bothered me to ;) :p

also wow in the time that i first joined this conversation 12 people have voted in favour of opera...12 people need to die :shiftyninja:

That's the definition of anti-competitiveness. They provide the platform, so their products should have an advantage above all of the other non-Microsoft solutions.

A Media Player is not an essential part of an OS.

A Web browser is not an essential part of an OS.

(...)

i made this comment along time ago. but the real competition when it comes to a media player isn't the player itself but the codecs. windows media player has been proven to be very competitive because it allows the installation of different codecs other than what came with it..

next. you are right. a browser might not be an essential part of an OS... but neither is a GUI or anything but the kernel. but that aside. At least a standard rendering engine should be part of a modern operating system.

Cut to the point and be honest in your reply.

Do you believe that the current alternative of having each application checking for updates on application startup or having that same application install an "updater" that just sits there doing nothing but checking for new application versions (and doing just that?) taking system resources is a better solution than the centralized software updater?

Yes. And since I've been honest the whole time, I'm not sure there's any point in elaborating. Constantly running updaters are stupid. That's not what most software does. It checks when you run it and that seems to work just fine.

Do you believe that using a (possibly compromised) Web browser to search for and download applications is a better solution than using a package manager?

This has nothing to do with the topic or the argument. It is supposition, and while Vista and Windows 7 both have a control panel for the updater it is still the same component that ran in the web browser. Perhaps if Opera wants a package management system in Windows they could commission one from Microsoft. It doesn't come with one.

I like the idea of EVERYTHING being in one update manager. But... with browsers WHO CARES!? All browsers have an update option and when you open them they tell you. If you use it as a default browser it will tell you the moment it opens that there is an update.

next. you are right. a browser might not be an essential part of an OS... but neither is a GUI or anything but the kernel. but that aside. At least a standard rendering engine should be part of a modern operating system.

i made this observation over and over again, but in essence Windows is a Browser that let's you run other applications on the side. The same explorer the manages all windows is the explorer with a rendering engine tacked on. As such the core of windows as a browser that let's you browse internet as well.

i gotta say i agree with them.

not in the sense that microsoft should be held back until they do so, but now that microsoft is offering other browsers on installation, if they want to keep security up, there going to have to included alerts for the other browsers when there are updates.

Unfortunately for MS the EU committee has invited all and sunder to shed their light on the ballot issue. Valid input from the plaintiffs (don't forget it wasn't just Opera who complained) WILL be seriously considered for inclusion in their final verdict.

This stuff sounds to me like something the EU will accept as relevant.

Opera software has a new suggestion to EU Commission. Opera wants the updates of browsers to be integrated with Windows Update and distributed by Microsoft. Opera thinks that if Microsoft doesn't distribute the security updates of rival browsers, it will cause some problems for users.

Opera is failing not just because their browser is crap, but also because they can't afford to advertise, promote it and distribute it. They've admitted as much. If they get this then they should have to pay to have it done. Opera needs to go away, permanently. Since they can't afford to run their business then they shouldn't be in business.

I guess I'll have to start writing software that competes with what's in Windows and then sue because similar functionality is included in the OS. Tehn I'll complain to the EU and have them make Microsoft distribute my stuff for me.

It's a free world, go ahead and write a browser with which you manage to get a marketshare against all odds due to illegal business practices.

Don't forget, Microsoft is in this mess because they committed a crime. A white collar crime is still a crime. They've been duly adjudged and found guilty. As such they are criminal organization which has to pay it's dues to the society whose rules they so long treated with total disdain.

So MS has to shut up, grin and bear it and move on.

It's a free world, go ahead and write a browser with which you manage to get a marketshare against all odds due to illegal business practices.

Spare me the whine and cheese. Firefox did it. Chrome is doing it. Safari for Windows is doing it. So much for "against all odds".

Opera has stated that it cannot afford to advertise and promote the browser. Not having the money to promote your product is not the fault of Microsoft.

Opera could barely sell their browser when they charged for it and can barely give it away now that it's free. That speaks volumes.

Google has some bad news for those still using MV2-based extensions in Chromium-based browsers, particularly Chrome. The company is now removing flags responsible for Manifest V2-based extensions (uBlock Origin is one of the most popular). However, some browsers resist this change, and Opera issued a statement that it will allow users to continue using MV2 extensions for as long as possible. While Microsoft is still not ready to share new details about MV2 extensions in Microsoft Edge, the company shared important details about the way it will be updating the browser going forward. Now, Microsoft wants to update Edge every two weeks across all platforms instead of the current four-week schedule (only the Extended Stable is exempt from this change). This week, Microsoft confirmed a useful new Teams feature that is coming to the messenger soon. It also detailed all the improvements that made the platform better for users in 2026. However, not all changes are great, as the company is moving ahead with the check-in feature, which many believe will lead to employee monitoring. PowerToys received a feature update this week. Reviews are in Here is the hardware and software we reviewed this week Steven Parker reviewed a rather unorthodox device here on Neowin this week. He took for a spin the DWARF mini, the world's smallest smart telescope for night and day sky captures. It tracks objects in the sky, has a sun filter, and has a low learning curve. There is also nice build quality and a quite affordable price. Pulasthi Ariyasinghe reviewed 007 First Light. The game turned out to be a satisfying spy adventure in the James Bond universe with great gunplay and combat, impressive crowds, over-the-top action sequences, and more. There are a few quirks here and there, but overall, the game scored high on our scale. On the gaming side Learn about upcoming game releases, Xbox rumors, new hardware, software updates, freebies, deals, discounts, and more. Microsoft held the latest XBOX Games Showcase this week. • Microsoft Flight Simulator's City Update 15 enhances Midwest cities by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The third major city update of the year has landed for the original Microsoft Flight Simulator and the 2024 release. The latest drop is upgrading the visuals and regional accuracy of three metropolitan regions in the American states of Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The 15th city update is adding eight new areas of interest that have been enhanced with high-fidelity TIN (triangulated irregular network) surface texturing in the mentioned regions. The free update highlights Chicago, Elgin, Cicero, and Arlington Heights in Illinois, as well as Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Duluth, Brooklyn Park, Woodbury, Lakeville, Plymouth, and Blaine in Minnesota. In Wisconsin, the development has also upgraded the lands and buildings of Milwaukee, Madison, and Racine. The update lands just as one of the world's largest enthusiast flight simulation conventions, FlightSimExpo, kicks off in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 14. The Flight Sim development team's 40-minute keynote at the event can be watched here. At the same time, Microsoft is bringing the 6-seat, single-engine, multi-use light civil airplane Piper M600 into the game as a part of its Expert Series 2 program. This premium plane can be purchased from the in-game marketplace for $24.99. City Update 15: The United States Midwest is now available in Microsoft Flight Simulator, as well as the newer Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, as an optional download. It can be accessed across Steam and the Microsoft Store for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, as well as Xbox and PC Game Pass subscriptions. Xbox One, mobile, and PC players can also jump into the new content using Xbox Cloud Gaming if they have a Game Pass Ultimate membership. The game must be updated to the latest version to download this free update from the in-game marketplace.
    • Five things you might have missed during Apple's WWDC 2026 by Aditya Tiwari Image: Apple Apple's annual developer event, WWDC 2026, happened from June 8 through June 12. We have already covered several new features and updates that the iPhone maker unveiled during the official keynote. Apple took Google's help and finally announced the upgraded Siri AI personal assistant, which now comes with an app. Moreover, a truckload of Apple Intelligence features took the center stage. That said, this year's WWDC is a bit different, and you might have noticed or missed the following stuff: Apple's ongoing unification of platforms Image: Apple One thing Apple is widely known for is its seamless hardware-software ecosystem. The company added a new chapter in 2020, when it began the Apple Silicon transition and launched macOS 11 Big Sur with native ARM support. Some major changes happened last year as well, when Apple renamed all of its operating systems to version 26 and introduced the Liquid Glass design language. Until WWDC 2025, Apple keynotes had dedicated segments for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and other operating systems, in which the company discussed each in detail. The WWDC 2026 keynote was different, and Apple allotted most of the screen time to Apple Intelligence and Siri. It didn't even publish separate press releases on its website for different operating systems. While it might seem surprising at first, it shows how Apple plans to move forward with its software ecosystem. Be it the Liquid Glass changes, child safety updates, or other features, they are mostly rolling out across multiple platforms. In other words, Apple is slowly blurring the line between its operating systems and achieving feature parity wherever possible. It's easy to rule out that someone in Apple's marketing team forgot to press the publish button. Everything is a calculated move when it comes to a company like Apple. Putting Apple Intelligence left, right, and center hints that the OS itself is no longer the product anymore. It's Siri, not Pepsi Time and again, various Apple products have been compared to unrelated things and turned into meme material. You might have heard about the "cheese grater" Mac Pro or the "trash can" Mac Pro, to name a few. It's Siri's turn this time. The upgraded AI assistant got a fresh logo, and people have started comparing it with Pepsi. There are other contenders, such as the Sony Ericsson logo and the Yin and Yang symbol. Shot on iPhone. Edited on Mac Image: Apple Apple has been putting the iPhone's camera muscles to the test on various occasions. Even NASA astronauts took it to Space earlier this year and captured some out-of-this-world photos. Recently, Apple TV streamed the first major live sporting event shot entirely on iPhone 17 Pro: an MLS match featuring the LA Galaxy vs. the Houston Dynamo FC. The 'Pro' iPhone has also been used to shoot Apple events in recent years. It's "Scary Fast" Mac event in 2023 was among the earliest attempts, and the tradition trickled down to the WWDC 2026 keynote, which ended with the tag line "Shot on iPhone. Edited on Mac." It's unsurprising to see Apple flexing the camera capabilities of its Pro models, especially when it has been baking professional-grade features, including ProRes RAW and Genlock. Hints for the foldable Apple has been sitting on the foldable iPhone for so long. There is still confusion over when the company will make it official. A recent report said that the iPhone Fold might get delayed as Apple is struggling to perfect its hinge mechanism. But Apple has been dropping hints here and there. A developer dug into the iOS 27 beta code and found internal references about device folding states. As verified by Macworld, the code includes references to "foldState" and "angleDegrees" internal status values, which are apparently designed to tell apps if a device is folded and at what angle. As of now, no other Apple device uses these states. The publication also found internal code suggesting Apple has been testing a device with both Touch ID and Dynamic Island, a combo that doesn't exist today. Last event as Apple CEO Image: Apple Tim Cook's bond with Apple is now almost three decades old, having started in 1998 as the SVP of Worldwide Operations. Back in August 2011, Steve Jobs stepped down as Apple CEO months before his passing, and Cook took charge. Now, the baton has been passed to the hardware chief, John Ternus, who will take over the role on September 1. WWDC 2026 is the last major Apple Event for Tim Cook as CEO. We have seen so much during Cook's tenure over the years, much of which defines Apple as we know it today. From new hardware product lines like Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Silicon, to boosting Apple's services business with Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Pay, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, Apple Care One, and more. That said, the first developer betas for Apple's latest operating systems are now available. You can check if your device is supported on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27, and other platforms. What's your favorite feature that Apple announced this year at WWDC 2026? Tell us in the comments.
