[definitive] Best Android Apps

Recommended Posts

I don't use the same number of apps as the most experienced Android users on the site, but I have to recommend a Twitter client called Twicca. It's free from the Market (well, it had better be, right?), but from having tried all the main Twitter clients, Twicca is probably the best. I live in an area that hasn't the most exemplary 3G coverage for whatever reason, and Twicca has always been the fastest Twitter client for pulling updates on my phone. It has a few bugs here and there (eg. it does randomly close at times), but all in all, Twicca has been my favorite client so far since it hits on the main points. The interface is quite nice as well, even though I do still prefer the Twitter for Android interface.

in 9 pages nobody mentioned Trillian yet? I just installed (although I have the pro version on the desktop) It almost made me juice my pants! It all my IM accounts up from my desktop to my device. I was in heaven.

I miss Goodreader from iPad immensely. Is there anything like that for my Android tablet? The nearest thing I've found it's Matano, but it's as intuitive as a car wheel covered in rusty nails (In Goodreader I could select a paragraph and copy, anotate, mark and highlight it without select it over and over again).

sshmote: use the phone as remote control for any player on the computer through ssh. It has profiles for mplayer, amarok, vlc, kaffeine and some more, but you can add your own commands for any other app (basically any app that runs or can be controlled from the command line).

Amarok2Remote doesn't need sshd but sshmote is more versatile and looks a lot better.

Gigbeat: I hate finding out that some band I like played live in my city and I didn't even notice. You just set up a list of bands in gigbeat and it'll tell you when any of them plays nearby.

RepliGo Reader and ezPDF Reader seems like good alternatives.

Tasker. http://tasker.dinglisch.net/ Rules based automation app - its pretty darn good.

Yes I'm surprised the only mention of Tasker was two years back. It's amazing for automating the things that you do everyday. As Lifehacker puts it, you can turn your smartphone into a superphone with Tasker =)

Maybe it has been mentioned already but I just found Plex some days ago, and it's frigging awesome (albeit a bit expensive compared to your average Google Play app price).

Plex for Android

I've been just watching a Breaking Bad episode streamed from home to my phone over 3G, reencoded on the fly to lower the bitrate and keep the stream smooth.

For me, one of my favourite apps lately has been Cerberus Anti Theft https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lsdroid.cerberus

Granted the name might be a bit misleading as no app can stop your phone being stolen, however this could easily help you get it back. It has lots of useful features through the website once the app is installed, like taking pictures or recording audio without the thief knowing and allowing you to download those items through your email, and also locking the device with a pin, tracking with GPS (which you can enable within the app) and you can also reboot the phone (if you're bored enough, can do this continually to pee off the thief) and you can also wipe the device and SD card if things get drastic.

A licence for up to 5 devices simultaneously costs just ?2.49 as well. so it's a bit of a bargain.

    • RevPDF 4.5.0 by Razvan Serea RevPDF is a free, fully offline PDF editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux that lets you edit text and images directly inside PDF files — no internet connection, no account, and no cloud uploads required. Unlike bloated alternatives that demand subscriptions and constant connectivity, RevPDF fits in under 60MB on desktop while delivering a complete editing toolkit: annotate, redact, sign, compress, split, merge, convert, and reorganize pages, all processed locally on your device. Smart font matching ensures edited text blends seamlessly with the original, and multi-language support includes RTL scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Where most PDF editors force you to choose between features and simplicity, RevPDF manages both. You can build interactive forms from scratch with text fields, checkboxes, and dropdowns, permanently redact sensitive data before sharing, draw freehand on contracts and diagrams, and add custom watermarks — all without a single file leaving your machine. Edit Text and Images Directly Inside PDFs RevPDF supports true inline PDF editing — not just annotation layers on top of a document, but actual modification of existing text and images within the file. A smart font-matching engine identifies the font used in the original document and applies it automatically when you make edits, so changes blend naturally with the surrounding content. You can reposition elements, resize images, and update text across single pages or entire documents. RevPDF 4.5.0 release notes: This is one of the biggest updates to RevPDF yet. A lot of things people have been asking for are finally here. New Features Auto Redaction Permanently redact sensitive text and areas from your PDFs before sharing. Clean, irreversible, and fully offline. Comments, Links & Bookmarks Add comments for review, insert clickable links, and create bookmarks to jump around long documents without scrolling forever. Find & Replace Search across the whole document and replace text in one go. Long overdue. Split Pages Vertically or Horizontally Split any page down the middle, vertically or horizontally. Perfect for scanned books or double-page spreads. New Drawing Tools More tools for freehand drawing and markup, better for annotations, sketches, and detailed notes. Continuous Scrolling in Editor The editor now scrolls continuously through pages instead of jumping between them. Working through long documents is a lot smoother now. PDF Metadata Editor View and edit the metadata stored inside your PDFs, including title, author, subject, and keywords. Better Font Matching Text edits now blend in more naturally by doing a better job of matching the original font. Tabbed PDF Viewer Open multiple PDFs at once in tabs and switch between them without going back to the home screen. Add Links Insert hyperlinks anywhere in your PDF, to external URLs or to other pages within the document. Share & Print Shortcuts Share or print directly from the editing screen, home screen, and viewer. No extra steps. Minor Updates Paste images directly from clipboard into your PDF New image editing tools for more control over images inside documents Bug Fixes Fixed file saving issues on Windows and Linux Everything still works fully offline. No login, no cloud, no account. Your files stay on your device. • Interesting. I'm not using a VPN with my phone. I tried though my home internet (Rogers) and my cellular internet (Telus) and both trigger the dialog above.
