New to this community, so sorry for butting in.

A couple of bits of information:

- All editions of Windows 7 use the same SKUs (Disk Image), one for 32bit and the other for 64bit. (I think they were split because of room on the disk).

- The key code given out at the Launch Event is for both 32bit and 64bit versions of the Ultimate Edition.

I'm going to the Oct. 26th Block of Orange (Orange County, CA) event at the AMC 30.

Officially, it's to see what issues may happen for developers with Windows 7 that I have to support.

Unofficially, I want to see if there's anything interesting I may have missed and to get a copy of Win 7 Ultimate to replace Vista.

The only reason to use the 32bit version of Windows 7 is to maintain compatibility with certain software that would not function in a 64bit system.

If one does not have that issue, go 64 !!!

Also, it might be wise to check compatibility with the Upgrade Advisor (Full version has been released), and it checks for both 32bit and 64bit compatibility for Hardware and Software.

So I just called this number:

(800) 360-7561

Which is supposedly "Microsoft Supplemental Parts" where you can order extra media and/or replacement media. And the guy I spoke to said you cannot get 64-bit version of the media because the version of Windows 7 we got was promotional. Which doesn't make any sense to me. Everywhere else I've read has said the 32-bit and 64-bit keys are interchangeable. Maybe he's just lazy? I dunno.

So what does that leave me with..? Software I can't use, or would rather note use because I have more than 3gb of ram? Since I have a perfectly legit key that is the exact same as retail key am I going to be forced to torrent this or what? Because I'm not buying another copy.

Here's something I'm curious about..I recently built 2 computers (one for myself, and one for my brother) and put 2 oem versions of Vista Home Premium on them so I'm getting 2 free upgrades to Win7 Home Premium. However I have this key for Ultimate. Does anyone know what we'll be getting as far as the free "upgrades" go? Is it actually a an upgrade version or full, is what I mean? And would I be able to use this disc to install and use my Ultimate key?

It's kind of moot yeah, I'm just irritated that they're making it so hard to get a 64-bit version.

Maybe I should just create a new thread to inquire about this.

Just went to the Windows 7 Launch yesterday.

Sponsor booths were not exactly numerous, but I got a Dyntek coffee travel mug, and another company gave me a Windows Phone cell phone cleaner that didn't worrk too well.

Morning sessions for Win 7 Development was interesting, giving me a closer look at the Windows API Code Pack, which incidently works with Vista as well.

One can check to see whether an API or Feature is supported on each OS and downgrade the functionality unique to that OS.

The morning sessions were obsessed with the Multi-Touch technologies, and their APIs, and a lot of instrumentation APIs that may be of interest to play with. :)

I picked up wmy Windows 7 DVD on exiting the morning sessions and handing in the feedback survey and sticker, but found little in the WS 2008 R2 sessions in the afternoon. Some handy changes for Admins, but nothing for the coder in me.

I snuck into the W7 security sessions, and found out about some new Group Policy based options for disabling installation of different software via Allow/Deny permissions, and found that interesting.

The hosts were pretty good, and I loved the morning sessions.

The DVD was 32bit only of course, but I decided to stick with that version due to some software I like to use that may not function in 64bit.

Installed it last night (clean boot), and it was quick, around 15 minutes on a HP Pavillion DV6928US with 3GB Ram. Windows update found some drivers, and most were there out of the box.

This included my PSC 1510, and it ran nicely.

i am hoping my x64 come soon in the mail i am currently running a version i got from a friend waiting for mine so i can put in the product key (running on the 30 day trial)

For all of you complaining about not receiving a 64-bit installation disc:

It's honestly not that hard to find the official ISO image of the disc online. And it's likely not illegal to download it, assuming you have a valid product key. If you want to try this route, do a Google search for: 326327CC2FF9F05379F5058C41BE6BC5E004BAA7

yes only the people who filled out the paper and did NOT receive a copy of windows 7 at the event will receive that. also im an idoit and the direct plus just means no physical media lol :p forgot about that.

Went to the launch event in Cleveland Heights and its highly recommended to attend both sessions! Learned a lot about Windows 7! The problem is that the t-shirt size is only XL and I wear XXL. I guess the nerds who attend are pretty small!

gah have fun with ur events as I'm forced to pay 500 bucks for win 7 ultimate......

You're not forced to do any thing, it's up to you if you want to pay that price for the high end version. Your choice, your mistake, don't blame Microsoft.

As of now, no signs of a response. I'm hoping they'll just send me a disc with no notification to my office, but I have this feeling at some point, I'll have to find the cheapest Windows 7/64 disc I can find.
