MW2: No Dedicated Servers, No Mods

"Call of Duty community manager Rob Bowling, also known as 'fourzerotwo', has confirmed in a podcast that the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will not support user-created mods. Worse, it will not support dedicated servers. PC gamers will have to suffer peer-to-peer connections, just like their console-owning cousins."

Anyone else wish they told us this prior to pre-ordering?

Have a pretty good feeling a few months later, should poor sales for the PC version surface, they will pin this on piracy and consider pulling the PC "port" for future versions.

i honestly do not see this being too much of a problem for the game play i understand with P2P you run the risk of poor connections effecting everyone however depending on what features they implement for matchmaking they can do a connection check to make sure that people are not simply running on a crap connection and setting them up with faster people which would slow everyone down. however being that they are doing this same thing with the consoles and it works i do not understand as to why it would be too much issue with the PC version of the game. Just my opinion (and im getting the PS3 version anyway)

P2P usually fails in games

demigod comes to mind, the slideslow multiplayer game

Why all the fuss?

People into online gaming must have at least 512Kb/s upload rates. That's more than enough to host a match.

It's not like everyone's still using dial up :p

A lot (and I mean a LOT) of people play online with a 256kbps down / 128kbps up connections.

Nail. Head. Hit.

I didn't have a pre-order because I was planning to buy it on day 1 and get stuck into the single player campaign first. Now I'll just borrow a friends copy (if any of them still get it) and play that first. By the time I'm done with the single player the dust should have settled a little and I'll see what state the multiplayer is in before deciding if it's worth buying it or to just stick with MW. I like the idea of standardised game settings but the test will be how well the matchmaking and user-hosted stuff works.

Do they live in Afghanistan by any chance? I can't get less than 2MB nowadays.

AFAIK, most ISP's offer really cheap internet plans that are <1MB, my ISP gives me 30down/1up for 60 a month, and thats really expensive by most standards

their only reasonable rate is around 30 bucks, for a sub 1mb connecton

and that doesnt count one of the main issues against P2P gaming, ISP's could falsely throttle it

I hardly no any ISP here in the UK that offers decent upload rates. im on a 2.5mb line and have an upload rate between 200-300, unless your on cable or close to the exchange if ur on adsl you get shocking upload rates and i reckon thats gona be the same for a lot of ppl

Here in the UK I have to get 20Mb internet just to get 0.7Mb upload. You don't wanna know what you get on 8Mb or 10Mb.

And 16 players would be laggy with 512 connections let alone 32 players. And what sort of tick rate are you going to get? Nothing decent. Also custom maps?? Sit there for half an hour downloading a map from some guys 512Kb upload? Seriously?

That is if you can even use custom maps. I don't think you can?

I've got an 8/1 (scrap that, it's been bumped to 10/1 2 months ago) connection and it's a relatively low speed connection. How can you guys live like that? :p

I don't know, I remember playing Quake through dial-up with a few other guys, no problems at all.

From my experience with l4d and any other game I've played, local hosted matches are always just awful compared to using a server even with a decent connection. And if the person's pc crashes, by by game.

    • It is such a shame. I used to really respect Neowin's articles.
    • So.... slower fixes and slower security updates are preferred? I mean, there is no goldilocks zone here until it can literally update without ever needing a restart, and even then I'm sure someone would complain.
