MW2: No Dedicated Servers, No Mods

Sethos, now you're not even making sense. I'm starting to think you're just a massive fan boy who has a hard one for IW who also likes to pretend he is a hardcore gamer.

What do you want me to do when you have 5+ members whining and wanting a comment out of you? It turns into short, "Meh" messages.

And I think you are just a bandwagon ###### who likes to pretend he's a gamer.

Idiots, hardcore players wont lose much?

How about being at the mercy of some random retard from halfway across the world with a crappy connection trying to host a big match and then when he gets tired of being killed, quits the game which in turn kicks everyone out from the fun they were having.

Im definately not buying this game, they were borderline *******s with the whole overpricing the game for PC market thing, but this just takes the cake.

How about being half way around the world, kicking the crap out of an admin and getting booted for "cheating"? It spins both ways. One of the main reasons I stopped playing BF2 was all the admin clowns with crazy rules (no jumpin, no noob tubes etc...) that are set to help them win. I was very hard pressed to find a server that was not ruled by these clowns, I just wanted to play the game the way it was meant to be played with the tools and weapons that are in the game. I moved over to the 360 because I could play COD4, beat your butt and laugh at you accusing me of somehow cheating, not get booted because the admin couldn't hang.

You better be careful saying anything negative about dedicated servers around these parts man, dedicated servers are like a religion to these people.

I don't see what all the crying is about - the matchmaking system works FINE on consoles and I don't see why it should be a problem on PCs either.

Sounds more like it's yet-another-tantrum from the "pure" computer players that feel they're "better than those poor console noobs who are just casual players and they're ruining our gaming waa!". Well I got news for you pals, you ruined your own gaming platform by pirating the whole system to shreds.

Again see my last post, you obviously aren't very efficient at finding servers.

Join servers by reputable gaming sites, stop joining servers called "Bobs Game".

I put hundreds of hours into BF2 and rarely ever came across any server I had to leave due to messed up custom rules. Join ranked servers/servers with VAC enabled/Servers from reputable gaming sites and the majority of the time they'll be vanilla rules.

Again see my last page, you obviously aren't very efficient at finding servers.

Join servers by reputable gaming sites, stop joining servers called "Bobs Game".

Last timed I wanted to join a HC S&D game or even HC TDM in CoD 4 PC there were no such servers.

I don't know why people constantly bitch about this, pretty much every game I've played has a slew of official servers, and then a load of respectable servers from the likes of Jolt/Multiplay/Fileplanet/Wireplay/Other gaming sites.

All of them unless noted are pretty much what I call semi-official servers, they'll be vanilla settings, and are usually online 24/7 all year.

The worst I ever tend to come across is custom sounds/stat tracking.

Maybe it's because I don't go for the servers called "JOHNZ PRIVATE GAME LULZ", or "THIS SERVER HAS NO GRAVITY AND SNIPERZ ONLY".

I'm only a casual player so I don't know what to look out for. Generally I just fire up the browser, pick free-for-all or TDM and sort by players. Pick a map I like with a decent amount of players and a decent ping. I don't remember seeing any big-name-looking servers in the list.

I just get tired of these stupid restrictions, especially when they're not even advertised in the server name. I just start into the game and then I get hit with "no claymore, no martyrdom, no jumping, no camping, no shooting me" etc.

I don't get all this bickering. If you're so insistent on other players just "moving along", why don't you do the same since you probably won't even be picking it up for PC anyhow...?

It's like, you're calling everyone whiners, but you keep on coming back to read more of it.

You have to be connected to the internet. ;)

All I play is TDM on hardcore...

I would honest to god be fine with the matchmaking system if it put you on a dedicated server (even if it wasn't a privately hosted server) but it doesn't. It's a user hosted game and I do not want to play games on connections like that. I also don't like the fact that one person will have a zero latency lag, which on pc's is quite an advantage.

Also, the main reason I am upset about this is that I actually really do want play the multiplayer but now feel cheated that I can't play it at an acceptable experience level.

Because I'm actually being positive about the game, not a crybaby and connected to the internet to see a certain kind of servers from top-hosters? k, make sense then come back.

And yes, I am picking up the PC version, so hurray for assuming.

Well follow my tip, I'm not sure where you're from in the world but USA/UK have lots of reputable gaming sites that host dedicated servers for an abundance of games. Usually these sites have anywhere from 5-10 servers for the game, sometimes more. I think Multiplay has like 14 TF2 servers running at once.

You do know you can favourite servers in most games also? Find a collection of 5-10 reputable servers that are up 24/7 and just play on them.

An easy fix for IW would be to show the custom rules the server has in place if you right click the server and go to more info, so you can tell before you join.

I used to favourite servers back in the CS:S days but never paid much attention to it with MW. It's actually been a while since I played MW so I'll pay closer attention to this next time.

An easy fix for IW would be to show the custom rules the server has in place if you right click the server and go to more info, so you can tell before you join.

See, this is a great idea. It would also be nice if you could filter out servers with custom rules set. The only problem then is if most people stick to the servers with the custom rules, you're out in the cold a little. The cleanest option would be to remove custom rules altogether.

In any case, I have a feeling they won't be adding anything back in. Especially if they're gambling on IWNet working. They've probably pumped enough money and resources into it to rule out any threat to it's success, which would mean dedicated servers.

lol maybe to some of us its not a simple matter of being positive about the game? I'm being positive about FPS multiplayer gameplay, by exposing a negative trend in FPS games. ;)

Make sense? You don't even play on PC. Hell, your game is probably OUT OF DATE, which may be why you don't see jack ****...

As I said, I only play HC TDM, and usually have around 5 servers listed as my most favorite which are generally well populated around 20-something players.

On top of that, you're calling people whiners and suggesting they move along and/or shut up about it, yet you continue to come here and read more and more of it. You even suggest that you can't be bothered to argue it anymore, yet you do that too anyway! Sheesh man, make up your mind!

CoD4 was great, WaW was great, and I was ready to put my money on what I thought would be another great game. Who knows? Maybe it'll still shine very bright, but for now at least, I'm letting the skeptic inside me withhold my dollar. At least, until I see the game is actually handling okay. I'm still quite against the change though on a whole. I find it to be a bit stupid, since gaming has been just dandy for me with FPS games over there years. Even some of the old hillbilly folk I met playing the games never seemed to have a friggin' problem with how it is currently.

The way I see it... if a 56 year old man who works on trains for a living can handle himself just fine in finding a good server, I'm sure any little teenager out there playing will be just fine.

It's the gamers creating a negative trend because they're like senior citizens, afraid of change.

Versus what? Bending over and lubing yourself up for the companies to screw you in the ass? Yeah, you go ahead. I'm fine right where I am.

My PC is faster than yours, I play ArmA 2 every day in my ArmA 2 clan based on Danish military conditions and my game is up to date - Nice try though.

And the rest I can't be arsed to read, haha.

lets not forget the biggest issue... player cap of like 20! lol.

I'm thinking 24, I don't think it'll be as low as 20.

Basically Activision's (Kotick's) dream is probably to turn every property they have into a copy of WoW, one way or another. They'll try use this new IW.net service to claim parity between the PC/Console versions which they'll use as leverage to no doubt try to price PC games the same as console games, plus it lets them lock absolutely everything down and potentially try to sell PC owners DLC map packs like they do console owners. With this sort of control everyone is at their mercy.

Activision hinted at a subscription based COD a while back, this might be the beginning of trying to level the PC/Console versions so they can both run on similar subscriptions in the future. If they can't do subscriptions it'll just be finding a way to do a consistent yearly iteration with no support for mods/custom maps and only what content is drip fed from Activision... meaning they drop DLC support, people are ushered onto the next iteration of the game. Remember the L4D2 Valve backlash? PC gamers should probably buckle up for Activision going into hyperdrive with this methodology, except potentially without the one minor free DLC pack, it'll probably be ?3.99.

The sooner Kotick gets chucked out of Activision the better it'll be for gamers, but his shareholders will love his complete lack of care for the gamers, and iron focus on money money money.

IMO whoever dumps on modders needs to quit game development. It's pretty much as low as you can get, Valve/Carmick and everyone else will be wanting to slap someone. It's the lifestream of PC gaming, something that makes it completely unique to any other form of gaming. Consoles can't touch it, they're far too closed, no matter what some games try to do (LBP/Modnation Racer/UT3 PS3 compatible with PC mods).

This is how I see it...

MP PC gaming has been defined because of dedicated servers. I would even make the argument this is where the term community in gaming stems from, PC gaming on dedicated servers.

So it really as simple as this to me. IW is now choosing to change the definition of what they believe a community to be, and well, the community does not like it. People want to host their own matches, choose their own map rotation, have the choice to kick people, the list goes on and on.

And quite frankly, I would be lying if I said I did not think some members of the PC MP community did not indeed take things to serious and to far. If I had a dollar for every dumb ass clan I encountered over the years I would be a rich man. But you know what? I respect their right to do so, and because I was once such an active part of the community myself, I understand why they do so.

So it really is as simple as this IMO.

Wether it is a better system, yet to be seen. No one will really know what until the game is actually released.

However is it a system that is totally trying to rewrite what it means to play MP games on the PC? It undeniably is, and that is the reason for, and why I 110% understand, the backlash.

And FTR, I am getting it on the 360. I always planned on doing so. I am one of those old men that chose the convenience of just sticking a disk in and more importantly sitting on my couch a few years back now (when I have the choice, I still have my gaming PC). So I personally have no interest in this other then when I recognize what I believe is absolute wrongdoing, I am going to point it out and share why I feel it is infact wrong.

The way I see it:

I currently play in a community that could've had our own MW2 server, but of course now that's not possible. But for the games that the community has had servers in, mainly TF2 and L4D now, it has resulted in a generally very positive gaming experience for me, and I've logged a few hundred hours in both games by now. L4D has matchmaking, but what happens in that case? I go up against absolute jackasses who do stupid stuff and end up quitting after one round. Playing with friends on community servers nulls that possibility.

So really, I don't see the justification there. And whoever wrote that news article with "PC fanboys" in the title... :hmmm:

    • Another devilish issue surrounding these certificates is what can happen with old, unsuspecting PCs that nevertheless have Secure Boot enabled. In my case, it was a Dell with a 3rd-gen Core chip (so about 13 years old). As of the last few weeks, it was suddenly BSOD'g within about 5 minutes of booting. Turns out it was because of MS's "Secure-Boot-Update" scheduled task, which is scheduled to run 5 minutes after login. It's explained in gory detail here (this is not my post, but it was where I found the answer), but the short version is that this legacy system would need fairly elaborate, manual certificate intervention since MS's automatic cert update method cannot work. How to do that is linked late in the thread. https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...od-caused-by-scheduled-task Secure Boot wasn't at all important for this particular PC, so I disabled it to be done with the problem.

App-local UI zoom — press Ctrl +/-/0 or use Ctrl+MouseWheel to scale the whole app, just like a browser. New External Apps: EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Rockstar Games Launcher, PowerShell, and Helium Browser. Bug Fixes Layouts no longer clip when the Windows text size slider is set above 100%. Accessibility: Narrator now announces setting names on toggles and dropdowns, previously unlabeled buttons are labeled, and progress updates are announced. Silent updates now respect your custom install location instead of reverting to the default. Cancel in Review Mode no longer clears your app selections. OneNote is now detected correctly for Win32 Click-to-Run installs. Clean Start Menu applies more reliably by also writing the group policy path. WinGet errors are no longer silent — error details now show in the terminal output. Fixed a startup crash on older Windows builds caused by a .NET runtime regression. Config import now converts power setting values correctly and no longer re-applies an already-active power plan. Improvements App icons load noticeably faster and cover almost everything now, including legacy capabilities and optional features — they come from a dedicated, checksum-validated icon repository and are fetched in parallel. Software & Apps polish: per-icon tooltips, extra table columns, an app sort dropdown, relocated search, and a cleaner compact view. A warning now appears when the Connected Devices Platform Service is set to Manual or Disabled, since some Windows features depend on it. • Of course the problem was Secure Boot's new certificates. Install media created by the official Media Creation Tool is already signed with a valid certificate from Microsoft, so maybe that certificate isn't "up-to-date" enough for machines with the new ones installed in the UEFI. There's really no other logical explanation.
