Shutter Island

Recommended Posts

I don't even know what to say. I'm going to make this very simple: it was the most predictable and boring movie I've seen in a long, long time.

The acting was good. The directing was fairly good. But the story was just atrocious. I have no clue how this script got greenlit, it's so unoriginal and unsatisfying. The dialogue attempts to show some sort of "nature of man" kind of deal, but in the end it's just boring.

Stay away if you're expecting anything out of the ordinary.

2/5

It was a pretty good film. Alot of people will look at the ending as a lackluster surprise, but I think it was intended to give you two possibilities and simply give you one. That said, the directing and acting far out did the script. That's for sure.

Is this supposed to be one of those movies that make no sense and make you go lolwut like Mulholland Drive or Synedoche New York?

No, it's not all over the place. It's a lot close to The Game with Michael Douglas.

I absolutely could not disagree more. It is nothing near "The Game" -- that actually kept you guessing. "Shutter Island" had NO twist and NO surprise. The ending was utterly obvious if you've even seen the promos or trailers. That's just my two cents on it.

Let me put it this way: every single conversation I heard exiting the theater about the movie was about how bad it was. Now, I'm not saying people can't like the movie. All I can do is give my opinion and the overwhelming opinion (at least the vocal one) of the theater I was at. Many people walked out of the movie, too.

The directing and acting was good, I will grant that. But it was all strung together by a very thing line.

It made perfect sense. It just wasn't entertaining, IMO. It's fairly easy to follow. But a lot of parts will just make you think "why is this part even in the movie?" I mean, no part just doesn't make sense with the script, but some parts just seem like the movie could have done without them as it dragged on too long.

You completely misunderstood what I was saying. It had the exact same structure as The Game. There were 2 very obvious possible endings and in the end it chose one. I wasn't saying what was better or which was more successful. You're obviously more passionate than I about a forgettable movie. And what the hell does the opinion of the movie in general have to do with what I was saying about it? Goodness....

And on this, I thought that every piece made sense as to why it was in the movie. Tying everything together and setting a creepy atmosphere are the two things in this movie that were done right.

...Honestly? I loved this movie. I suppose I might be in the minority here... the ending I thought was the best part - because I still have no idea how it *really* ended

In fact, he could simply be faking in order to get off the island or something >.<[/spolier]

It was funny today at the theater though - I was going with a bunch of my friends, and they had gone to a late lunch when I got to the theater half an hour early. (I'm nearly always the late one...) They made it just in time for the box office to put up the 'sold out' sign... the only person already there from our group was a girl I barely know, one of their friends. It seems that inadvertently, they set me up on a date with their friend >.< (I'm hoping it was an accident, but they can be devious :p)

There is just a STRONG divide between people with this movie!

Some people felt the movie is near-Masterpiece... a lot LOVED it. A lot hated it!

I can see how some people see it as a masterpiece.... the plot has another twist that they feel is left up to the viewer -

Teddy is ACTUALLY OK, NOT insane at all the whole time! It IS a conspiracy...

It's ALL about interpretation here, right?

Although I haven't read a single conviencing opinion yet why the movie is a near-masterpiece if it's not that Teddy is NOT actually crazy factor, but it's getting really good ratings on IMDB right now.

SPOILER-ISH

Time and time again, people blame a film for being all surface and no depth when it is they who look only at the surface. I have yet to watch this (probably won't ever be shown in Malaysia), so I can't say for sure, but I've read the book. On the one hand, I think the twist is so big that it envelopes everything that precedes it. The sheer size of it makes the rest of the book feel small, and I can understand how people do not like it. On the other hand, it isn't shallow by any means. It shows what a human mind is capable of, the dark places it goes to, the length it goes to delude itself. That we journeyed an entire movie (book in my case) with this mind and character, and to see it reduced to such a state in the end, is heartbreaking stuff. I still can't really give the twist an unqualified commendation, but what lies beneath the twist, I have no complaints. And I have faith a great director like Scorsese will do the book justice. The trailers looked excellent.

BIG SPOILERS

And besides, from what I hear, the ending in the film isn't as clearly tied up as you people claim. Did it not cross your mind that, at the very end, Teddy might have in fact recovered from his insanity and voluntarily chose to be lobotomized because he did not want to live with his memories? Now does that not add yet another layer to the movie?

I think you should put a spoiler warning. And there is no interpretation -- the ending is clear.

Spoiler tags apply to Movie ratings forum?

I think you should put a spoiler warning. And there is no interpretation -- the ending is clear.

Plenty of people on IMDB forums (Though not saying they are the smartest people on there) thinks

he wasn't actually crazy

Nevertheless, I think this sorta of plot has been done before many times, but this is a more spooky/stormy version.

Tell me again. What makes this movie SO GOOD to some people, but SO BAD to others?

You think it's because this movie is TOO complex for some people that they hate to just THINK (Perhaps same reason they hate a TV show like Lost), since this is sorta of a THINKING movie wouldn't you agree?

Opinion, everyone is entitled to it.

Honestly I have to agree with the OP.

When you find start to find out he is actually the one who killed his wife because of what she did the movie went downhill for me. It would have been better if it WAS a conspiracy, and he had to unravel it and escape the island or fail trying.

I would give it a 3/5, however, just because the acting was good.

Is it possible to be in the MIDDLE, when everyone else either didn't like it or loved it?

That's where I stand and I haven't heard anything conviencing yet from either camp to pull me in their direction.

Are some people really actually that smart they knew the twist just by watching the trailer like they claimed? Or, that's FULL of ****?

I agree completely it would've been far more interesting that way. Or at least if there were a few twists to keep you guessing -- I never really kept guessing at all. It seemed like the only logical outcome.

The acting was good, though.

I have a feeling I'll end up renting the Blu-ray when it comes out just to attempt to give it another watch.

Agreed, definitely another watch is in order. Must be some things you miss the first time around, especially in this type of movie. Who knows maybe they will have interesting deleted scenes.

  • 3 weeks later...

My reaction after watching this movie: "That's it?"

Think most of the cinema audience felt the same way. Everyone seemed kinda bummed.

The acting was good but the movie felt slow and all over the place.

About the LOST comment, I love LOST and like the twists and turns. This movie however felt chaotic.

At some point I thought "enough already".

Spoiler:

At the very end when DiCaprio says ?which is worse, to live as a monster or die as a good man??, I believe he is cured but chooses the lobotomizing to forget what he has done.

I'd give it 2/5 because of the acting.

Wouldn't recommend it.

    • This is about the EU given consumers options, Apple is all about not giving options and locking you into its own services, this hurts Apple far more than it hurts the EU market because it makes Apple products look less appealing by Apple refusing to offer its own service because they have to give options to rivals, the end results are consumers might look at alternatives like Android. It's a game Apple can't really win when there are alternatives and Apple will in time change course on this, until then, let Apple hurt themselves in the EU market.
    • Microsoft unveils new Surface Laptop with improved trackpad, Snapdragon X2, and more by Taras Buria Microsoft's new Surface Laptop Ultra generated a lot of buzz earlier this month, but in addition to its most powerful laptop with an NVIDIA chip, Microsoft also has a more affordable laptop lineup, which has been waiting for an update for quite a while. Today, Microsoft announced the eighth-generation Surface Laptop. The new Surface Laptop is powered by the Snapdragon X2 Plus and X2 Elite processors. These chips offer faster CPU performance, up to 58% faster graphics, and 80 TOPS Neural Processing Units (NPUs) for on-device AI processing. Like the previous models, these chips retain their great energy efficiency, and Microsoft says that buyers can expect up to 20 hours of work on a single charge. The laptop is available in two sizes: 13.8-inch and 15-inch. You will have a hard time finding visual differences between the new and previous models, as Microsoft is not taking any major design leaps, except for the new Jade color, which may look familiar to Surface Laptop 5 owners. Other colors include Platinum, Black, and Dune. The 15-inch variant got a higher-resolution display. It is a 3,270 x 2,180 resolution screen with a pixel density of 262 ppi (the 13-inch model has a 201 ppi density) and a maximum brightness of 600 nits SDR and HDR. Unlike the Surface Pro 12th-gen, which is available with optional OLED displays, the Surface Laptop sticks with IPS, a 1,300:1 contrast ratio, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Another notable change in the Surface Laptop 8 is its trackpad. It now provides haptic feedback when you perform various actions in apps and the operating system. It is a relatively new feature that Microsoft brought to Windows 11 in recent updates, and it is only available on certain devices, such as the Logitech MX Master 4, Surface Slim Pen 2, the upcoming Surface Laptop Ultra, and now the Surface Laptop 8. The new Surface Laptop with the new Surface Pro Like its tablet-shaped sibling, the new Surface Laptop is notably more expensive. It starts at a $1,599 for a 13.8-inch configuration with a 256GB SSD and 16GB of RAM. However, in the US, the base model has double the storage while keeping the same price. Available configurations include up to 64GB of memory and up to 2TB SSD (user-removable PCIe Gen4). The Surface Laptop 8 is now available for purchase on the official Microsoft website.
    • Microsoft announces 12th-gen Surface Pro with Snapdragon X2 processors by Taras Buria So far, 2026 has been rich in Surface announcements. Microsoft started with a fresh lineup of Surface for Business devices powered by Intel's new Core Ultra 300 processors. Then the company revealed the Surface Laptop Ultra, its most powerful laptop with NVIDIA's RTX Spark processor. Now, it is time for new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models with Qualcomm processors. Microsoft's original Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X1 chips debuted in late May 2024. Two years later, Microsoft is finally updating the lineup with new models featuring Snapdragon X2 processors. The 12th-gen Surface Pro continues the well-established formula of Microsoft's flagship tablet, and Microsoft is not even changing colors, as the tablet will be available in three colors: Dune, Black, and Platinum. The most important changes are mostly hidden inside. Microsoft switched from the Snapdragon X1 to the new Snapdragon X2, which promises up to 53% faster graphics performance than the previous generation and up to 15.5 hours of battery life. The built-in NPU is also much more powerful, and it can run at up to 80 TOPS for on-device AI processing. Like before, the new Surface Pro is available with a 13-inch IPS display, and Microsoft is still offering OLED as a separate, more expensive configuration. Speaking of configurations, the Surface Pro will be available with a 10-core Snapdragon X2 Plus or a 12-core Snapdragon X2 Elite. Microsoft expanded the available RAM configurations to 64GB (previously 32GB was the maximum), while storage remains unchanged at 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of user-replaceable PCIe Gen4 SSDs. The new Surface Pro and the Surface Laptop Other specs remain mostly unchanged. The computer has the same 1440p Windows Hello webcam, two USB4 ports for charging, data, and display output, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 support, dual speakers, and compatibility with Surface Pro Signature and Flex keyboards. With that said, there is one very important aspect of the Surface Pro that changed significantly, and it is the price. While the previous-gen Surface Pro launched at $999 for the base configuration, in 2026, the entry-level Surface Pro with Snapdragon X2, 16GB of memory, and 256GB will set you back an eye-watering $1,499. To sweeten the pill, Microsoft is running a limited-time promotion where Surface Pro buyers can get a free Surface Pro 13-inch Keyboard. The promo runs from June 16 through June 30. The new Surface Pro is available now on the official Microsoft Store website.
