Shutter Island

I liked the movie but I will really need to watch it again before I can say just what I would rate it. It's at least an 8/10 for me, but the following spoilers and questions would have a great impact for me.

I would really like to know whether this was a conspiracy or not. After that I'd like to know whether he was crazy or not at the end when he goes to be lobotomized. I think he chooses to be lobotomized, either because he can't live with the fact that he murdered his wife and she killed his children or that it is indeed a conspiracy and he'd "rather die a good man". Either way, I usually can see what is going to happen in movies but I honestly didn't see this coming. I know a lot of people here have said they did, and I'm honestly surprised at that. I didn't expect it to be as simple as him being crazy, but we all knew they would say he was at some point. I just got done watching it a few minutes ago and I feel an overwhelming sense of shock and emptiness, similar to the ending of No Country for Old Men, which I did like and get, but I don't with this. Maybe I just don't like how simple the ending was and don't like it after the whole story. I wish I knew what really happened in this movie, but I guess that's sort of the point. If it is just as simple as him being crazy and still being crazy at the end and believing the story again I certainly would think much less of the film.

Overall, the acting is great. The direction from Scorsese is superb as usual, the scenery is beautiful. I have questions about the story that I mentioned in the spoilers, I guess nothing should matter other than what I just saw, but it leaves me with a few nagging issues that I don't really like. For me it's okay to be nagged by the feelings you get at the end of movies like No Country for Old Men which comes to mind or how disturbed I felt when I watched the Michael Moore film "Capitalism: A Love Story" but I don't like not knowing if this movie is either more complex or simpler than what what the story lead me to think. It's also similar to Vanilla Sky in which a lot of what happened wasn't real but at the end of that movie you got a conclusion and closure I don't know if I will know watching it a second time, so on second thought I'm not sure if I will.

I watched this movie today and I dont think its a conspiracy. The reason i think so is b/c

even when he is hallucinating, he sees his wife and a child and they knew exactly what it was. If they had just drugged him, how did they know about what exactly he was hallucinating? the wife maybe if they had read his file that his wife died in a fire but not the children and how the oldest child keeps telling him that "he could have saved them".

.

As for the ending,

i think it can be interpreted two ways, first, he was still crazy and second, he was cured but pretended to be crazy so he can die.

To add to my previous comment - My brother and a friend were watching it and knew what was going on after about 20 minutes and actually turned it off. After seeing part of it a second time I did notice how everyone was watching him and that they knew him because he was really a patient there. I can't believe it was so simple. Like someone else said, that's it?

What kills the movie for me is not that the plot is predictable per se, but that it's been done many times before (with varying degrees of depth) that you can't help seeing it coming.

I didn't actually expect that

he was the guy he was trying to find

, but almost at the beginning he had a dream were

his wife's belly was bleeding, which wouldn't make sense if she had actually died in a fire

. You don't know the details, but that alone puts you on track of what's going on.

The acting was good, nice atmosphere and everything, but the plot is meh. Not bad but not surprising either, when it was supposed to be (again probably not the script's fault, just the fact that it's been done several times before),

Maybe the

conspiracy plot

could have been a bit dull for a supposed masterpiece. I would have preferred a third, different and totally unexpected ending :p

(Not sure why I bother with the spoiler tags when it's been spoiled to hell already).

Just watched it there now, and I never watch trailers for movies so I don't know if that's why I'm so disappointed, but from everyone that's talked about it they're like, "TWIST! It's amazing" I am an avid fan of movies with twists, so it being obvious what it was in the first 10 minutes kind of ruined it for me. As a movie in itself I guess it was ok, well acted and can make you question what exactly is going on.

But if you're looking for a movie that'll make you "Wow" at the end, this definitely isn't it.

I enjoyed it very much thank you :) though

It was kinda obvious when he firsts arrives at the island and all the others kinda stare at him, one even says hi. Also How would rachel know he is a cop if she's been running around hiding? But then the end phrase he'd rather go out a decent man instead of a monster got me thinking

Finally watched this.

I found it to be a superb, layered film. Those expecting a shocking twist will be disappointed. In fact, heaving read the book, the ending is even less surprising in the movie. Those calling it a B-movie, or a shallow one, are wrong. Those saying the ending is over-explained do not get it. What this is is a chilling suspense drama/mood piece, and while it may not be obvious from the start, ultimately it is one very character-driven film. It's thought-provoking on several levels, but the movie can only do so much, the thinking has to be done by you. You will be rewarded. The photography and especially the lighting are excellent, each shot portends something sinister lurking further ahead. The soundtrack, while unabashedly doom-and-gloom, is nonetheless undeniably fitting. There is Kubrick (especially the Kubrick of The Shining) in there. There is Hitchcock in there. And it all makes for one dark and disturbing trip to a place we do not want to ever be in. The middle section might just be a tad unfocused, but I'm having a hard time not giving this 5 stars.

I seen this awhile ago, and thought it was very predictable..

However, it will still a decent film to watch, and the story is a little weird. I was expecting this to be a horror / thriller movie, but it was something totally different.

I'm gonna give it a 6.5/10 (Y)
