So i just got a PS3 for free

Recommended Posts

So a friend of mine gave me his good old school 80GB fat PS3 (which is the one i would buy if i liked the console since slim feels cheap) with 2 controllers but i have no games. The only games he had were football games which i dont play. Basically if i ever bought this console it would only be for GT5

So i am thinking about buying 5 games maximum for now and as i said one of them will be GT5 when it gets out (just for the graphics and the many vehicles).

So since i am not into the PS3 and dont really know the must have titles for it could you recommend some games?

At pc i enjoy racing games and fps and i also like platform games in general.

Any suggestions for now? Any upcoming titles i should look forward in the future?

Uncharted 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4- however a warning about the latter.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is part of the Metal Gear Solid series and such does require knowledge of the previous games- I learned this when I played it; none of it made sense to me.

You already game on PC. Don't buy any FPS on the console. FPS are always better on PC. Also, don't buy any games that are moddable (Oblivion, Dragon's Age, Fallout 3) provided your PC is good enough.

With that said, here's the games I consider to be worthy purchases separated by categories.

Action Adventure:

*Uncharted 2

Batman: Arkham Asylum

*Dante's Inferno

God of War Collection

**God of War III

inFamous

RPG:

*Valkyria Chronicles

Demon's Souls

*Star Ocean: The Last Hope

*Final Fantasy XIII

Platformer:

*Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Fighting:

**Super Street Fighter IV

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger

Tekken 6

Other:

*Heavy Rain

Little Big Planet

* Games that I have enjoyed the most.

** Games not released yet.

Hope this helps.

I know you are currently a PC Gamer, but i think you'll find room in your life for the Playstation too!

Some titles released on PC are blatant console ports which run pathetically, regardless of your hardware. Now this is not the fault of PC Gamers or their hardware, but rather that of the Lazy developers. So if a game receives poor reviews for PC, you now have the choice to get it for console.

The Playstation can be used as a Media Centre in conjunction with your Computer too :) It can access file shares over your network quite easily, allowing you to Stream or Download digital content with ease.

You can also watch television and browse the web with it and best of all, on the older models you can install Linux :D - There are some nifty USB keyboards that resemble that of a Laptop Keyboard & Touchpad. Really useful for Couch surfing :) Using just the PS3 browser you can then play Flash Games, browse Neowin e.t.c

Oh and of course, Blu-ray Support allows for you to watch films in crystal quality.

If the idea takes your fancy, you can also upgrade the hard drive yourself.

I hope it was a 80GB BC. If it is, i would LOVE to meet your friend.

Now, I would suggest thanking him as you got a free blu ray player and theres games like LBP, Killzone, and hopefully SOCOM comes back with 4. Confrontation was a big **** up. But besides that, play GOW, game besides GT that the PS2 was good for in my boko. There were a LOT of games for the PS2 and i have to deal with ALL of them everyday at work, but believe me, GOW/SF/Bully/GTA/etc games like these were the games I played.

its these not this.

my bad

Batman: Arkham Asylum - is good too.

As for MGS4 requiring knowledge of previous games - i never played them (except the original on ps1 - and only for a tiny bit) and i found it great. took me a few hours to get into it, but after than it was awesome.\

i am more worried about FFXIII... it is the first FF i ever played, and i am just not getting in to it at all. seems boring, the fighting in the first level.

i loved some RPGs like Neverwinter Nights... but the fighting and story was way better from the start

ps. please no grammar police... i dont give a crap if i make spelling/grammer mistakes in a forum

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

With regards to FPS gaming in consoles i agree. My brother who is not into video games rented Turok for PS3 for me which no matter if it is a sucky game (which it is as long as i played it) it was unplayable in terms of controls so i am guessing that every FPS will be like this in consoles so FPS are out except if i am mistaken.

For example if Battlefield Bad Company 2 also controls like that (first analog stick moves your body and second moves your head) then i can't get it coz it will be highly unplayable for me plus i can enjoy it on PC.

Now i "googled" and "youtubed" Heavy Rain which has the looks but i am too old for puzzles and riddles. :D

So I managed to build a list but i am still missing 2 games.I really want MGS 4 in that list but will i not enjoy the game that much if i havent played the prequels?

Also Rachet and Clank will probably be in my list but from "A Crack in Time" and "Tools of Destruction" which one do you think is better?

Here is my list

Tekken 6

Gran Turismo 5

God of War III

As you can see i am playing it safe with well known classic titles coz PS3 games are kind of expensive and i wouldnt want to throw my money away.

Thanks again for your help. :)

as i said before. get MGS4. it does not matter if you played the previous games, and it will take you a few hours (maybe 5) before you are getting serious with the game...

but it is totally worth it. the plot/game play dynamics are just great, and once you learn it, it is very fun.

i recommend reading a FAQ - not a walk through, but something to make you better oriented in the game.

it took me ages to get into it, i did not like it at first... but people told me it is the best, so i tried again and again... and after a few hours of game, i was seriously into it. :D

try it, you will like it.

ps, heavy rain was a bit of a disappointment at first too. but the story does suck you in later and it is great. it is exciting to mash buttons on screen and make choices. it is an interactive movie, not a usual game. so i recommend it, but i did not include it, incase you are looking for pure action, not a story.

you are playing it safe?? God of War III not even released yet, and gran torismo is also in development. in fact GoW3 will be out soon, but there is no date for GT5. the GT5 prologue, is not real GT5.

so you only have one real game on the list and one soon to be released GoW3. i love tekken, so i approve. gow3 should be good and it is out soon....

but you really should consider getting another game. MGS4 and uncharted and the landmark titles and both are fantastic in their own terms. it will be stupid not to get them, since they pretty much define PS3 gaming.

as for battlefield... yeah, i prefer pc too... but i was not sure you do. so i offered it as a good alternative. however, there is nothing like uncharted2 and MGS4 on pc, they are unique in their own way, and are great to play on the console.

how about we go with a list of PS3 exclusives that you cant just download?

Heavy Rain

Metal Gear Solid 4

God Of War III

Resistance 2

Uncharted 2

Killzone 2

MAG

Ratchet & Clank

Don't forget Little Big Planet.

Xbox 360 has NOTHING like it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Both A Crack in Time and Tools of Destruction are great. I would say to get them all, including Quest for Booty in order to understand the story arc they are telling. Tools of Destruction & Quest for Booty are very cheap. I'm currently playing A Crack in Time and it's great.

As for other recommendations:

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Grand Theft Auto IV

Infamous

LittleBigPlanet

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2

Ratchet & Clank : Quest for Booty

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

Ratchet and Clank: A Crack In Time

The Saboteur

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Valkyria Chronicle

Satisfaction guaranteed.

GoW3 is out next week, is part of one of Sony's biggest franchises, and is already getting top reviews. And I can say first hand it is amazing. So yeah, he is playing it safe in that regard.

I do agree with MGS4 as well.

i love my ps3, (enough to sell my 360) and never cared for mgs4. god of war collection was great, but infamous and the ratchet and clank games were AMAZING.

god of war 3 is the first game i've ever preordered, but after playing uncharted 2 i would have preordered that one had i known how good it turned out.

if you want to "sell" the ps3 to yourself, stick with some exclusives, as they tend to really show what the ps3 is capable of.

    • This is about the EU given consumers options, Apple is all about not giving options and locking you into its own services, this hurts Apple far more than it hurts the EU market because it makes Apple products look less appealing by Apple refusing to offer its own service because they have to give options to rivals, the end results are consumers might look at alternatives like Android. It's a game Apple can't really win when there are alternatives and Apple will in time change course on this, until then, let Apple hurt themselves in the EU market.
    • Microsoft unveils new Surface Laptop with improved trackpad, Snapdragon X2, and more by Taras Buria Microsoft's new Surface Laptop Ultra generated a lot of buzz earlier this month, but in addition to its most powerful laptop with an NVIDIA chip, Microsoft also has a more affordable laptop lineup, which has been waiting for an update for quite a while. Today, Microsoft announced the eighth-generation Surface Laptop. The new Surface Laptop is powered by the Snapdragon X2 Plus and X2 Elite processors. These chips offer faster CPU performance, up to 58% faster graphics, and 80 TOPS Neural Processing Units (NPUs) for on-device AI processing. Like the previous models, these chips retain their great energy efficiency, and Microsoft says that buyers can expect up to 20 hours of work on a single charge. The laptop is available in two sizes: 13.8-inch and 15-inch. You will have a hard time finding visual differences between the new and previous models, as Microsoft is not taking any major design leaps, except for the new Jade color, which may look familiar to Surface Laptop 5 owners. Other colors include Platinum, Black, and Dune. The 15-inch variant got a higher-resolution display. It is a 3,270 x 2,180 resolution screen with a pixel density of 262 ppi (the 13-inch model has a 201 ppi density) and a maximum brightness of 600 nits SDR and HDR. Unlike the Surface Pro 12th-gen, which is available with optional OLED displays, the Surface Laptop sticks with IPS, a 1,300:1 contrast ratio, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Another notable change in the Surface Laptop 8 is its trackpad. It now provides haptic feedback when you perform various actions in apps and the operating system. It is a relatively new feature that Microsoft brought to Windows 11 in recent updates, and it is only available on certain devices, such as the Logitech MX Master 4, Surface Slim Pen 2, the upcoming Surface Laptop Ultra, and now the Surface Laptop 8. The new Surface Laptop with the new Surface Pro Like its tablet-shaped sibling, the new Surface Laptop is notably more expensive. It starts at a $1,599 for a 13.8-inch configuration with a 256GB SSD and 16GB of RAM. However, in the US, the base model has double the storage while keeping the same price. Available configurations include up to 64GB of memory and up to 2TB SSD (user-removable PCIe Gen4). The Surface Laptop 8 is now available for purchase on the official Microsoft website.
    • Microsoft announces 12th-gen Surface Pro with Snapdragon X2 processors by Taras Buria So far, 2026 has been rich in Surface announcements. Microsoft started with a fresh lineup of Surface for Business devices powered by Intel's new Core Ultra 300 processors. Then the company revealed the Surface Laptop Ultra, its most powerful laptop with NVIDIA's RTX Spark processor. Now, it is time for new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models with Qualcomm processors. Microsoft's original Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X1 chips debuted in late May 2024. Two years later, Microsoft is finally updating the lineup with new models featuring Snapdragon X2 processors. The 12th-gen Surface Pro continues the well-established formula of Microsoft's flagship tablet, and Microsoft is not even changing colors, as the tablet will be available in three colors: Dune, Black, and Platinum. The most important changes are mostly hidden inside. Microsoft switched from the Snapdragon X1 to the new Snapdragon X2, which promises up to 53% faster graphics performance than the previous generation and up to 15.5 hours of battery life. The built-in NPU is also much more powerful, and it can run at up to 80 TOPS for on-device AI processing. Like before, the new Surface Pro is available with a 13-inch IPS display, and Microsoft is still offering OLED as a separate, more expensive configuration. Speaking of configurations, the Surface Pro will be available with a 10-core Snapdragon X2 Plus or a 12-core Snapdragon X2 Elite. Microsoft expanded the available RAM configurations to 64GB (previously 32GB was the maximum), while storage remains unchanged at 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of user-replaceable PCIe Gen4 SSDs. The new Surface Pro and the Surface Laptop Other specs remain mostly unchanged. The computer has the same 1440p Windows Hello webcam, two USB4 ports for charging, data, and display output, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 support, dual speakers, and compatibility with Surface Pro Signature and Flex keyboards. With that said, there is one very important aspect of the Surface Pro that changed significantly, and it is the price. While the previous-gen Surface Pro launched at $999 for the base configuration, in 2026, the entry-level Surface Pro with Snapdragon X2, 16GB of memory, and 256GB will set you back an eye-watering $1,499. To sweeten the pill, Microsoft is running a limited-time promotion where Surface Pro buyers can get a free Surface Pro 13-inch Keyboard. The promo runs from June 16 through June 30. The new Surface Pro is available now on the official Microsoft Store website.
