Google: HTML5 can run Quake II in web browser

Lol quite a misleading title. All this project did was turn the OpenGL and OpenAL requirements into WebGL. The entire game still runs of the Java engine.

Actually, the Java was cross-compiled in JavaScript. From the sound of it, it's purely browser-based. No applet to install. I'm downloading it to verify, though.

Good for some circumstances I guess. But isn't it better if the game could communicate with the hardware directly? This way, game runs in the browser and the browser communicates with the hardware. There must be a performance cost here.

Well quake 3 works in browser as well :D

with a 200M+ plugin download? aside from being shown inside a browser window, it's not really "working in browser", since plugins are just separate programs that takes control of a part of the browser window and shows output in it.
