Kinect - Inital Impressions

Recommended Posts

I'm sooooo dissapointed in MS for this. Whatever they could've gained from avoiding any "mishaps" be prerecording it they lost in trust by making believe it was real... realmad.gif

The "event" wasn't real, I don't think anyone said it was, it's was just a big live (also being recored) marketing event. They'll show real natal/kinect stuff soon at the 360 press conferece. The point was just to reveal the new name, nothing else.

I was actually really impressed by the Ubisoft fitness game. I doubt I'll ever use it but it made me want to, which is a first for that type of game.

Was really nice when it brought up the body stats (if they were even close to being accurate that is).

I was never too sure of this since they announced it, but I just had a chance to watch the briefing and I'm sold on it. The YourShape is definitely something I could see using and enjoying. And although I'd never play it, the dance game that Harmonix showed was impressive with how smooth and accurate the motion sensing was.

Most of the criticism I've heard is about how Wii-like some of the software is at launch, but did anybody honestly expect they wouldn't copy some of the same software? Besides, it's still somewhat unique in that there is no controller. I'd still like to see some more upper level software for it. The Turn 10 guys showed off what amounts to an interactive garage, which was cool, but very gimmicky in my opinion.

I also really like the improvements to the NXE they're making to accommodate Kinect. Plus, voice control! No more fumbling for my media remote while I'm watching Netflix.

Yeah, Turn 10... What's with the Ferrari advert jeeeez, that scripted language was absolute cringe!

And yeah NXE plus kinect looks amazing.

Kotaku has a brief article on it:

Here's a replay of the new dashboard:

At the beginning he's in the regular dashboard, then he goes to the Kinect one. You can see the regular dashboard will be getting an update, too, and it looks more smooth as well.

I wonder if the connect hub is customisible, I think it will be so you can put up things you want to get to fast instead of having to go through the dashboard like now.

And ya, the new dashboard update will probably be coming once the new 360's hit retail I think, so probably in a week.

I can't see the new dash being released until Kinect is out

Well, maybe, that'd be a bummer I suppose but on the other hand they could update the core dash, minus the kinect hub, once the new 360's hit shops. Either way works I suppose, not like I hate the current dash or anything.

I'm a lazy couch gamer, so Kinect isn't for me, but and a big BUT my Xbox is also a girls pleaser (in the casual gaming sense :p) so it's a must buy for me

Hey you also won't have to get up and look for that remote anymore as well, +1 for extra lazy!

I find this whole "it's not for me so therefore it sucks" mentality kind of amusing. I can see that if I had a little daughter they would love Kinectimals. The exercise on might be good for the wife (at least you don't have to hold anything like the Wii). For me? The remote control thing is great. I mean, look at the prices on these remotes. Hell, even webcams can be in the $60-70 range. Now the price of Kinect seems more reasonalble considering all it can do. Sure, the controller will still be the main way to game, but this just adds another dimension to certain things.

We reading the same thread?

No, you're right. I was actually thinking "in general" from what I've seen such as comments to videos on Gametrailers or the feed that was going on during the stream. There was only one or two negative posts (that I read here) and they were actually very respectful about it, not "flamey".

I'm actually looking forward to it. I will definitely get it. My wife has wants one. :D

There may be not need for a Wii now.

Oh snap! If the wife wants one now you can't say no. :p

Ugh yeah I turned off the comments on the IGN feel. I was taking the **** a tad on twitter I dig the whole UI interface thing a lot. MS have been pushing this whole motion capture/control thing for some time and it's a obvious progression of things. But I have a small room and no interest in waving my arms about like a moron. I don't understand the blind rage behind it. It's not going to kill the industry, that will be publishers playing follow the leader (look at MW2 last year now look how many shooters we coming out the year after wanting a piece of the pie).

But it is expensive. If there is a hardcore gamer in the house it takes the edge off the cost. But still it could be £100. Now while I, single 24 with a reasonable job, can afford to blow that kind of money on impulse. I'd imagine most cannot. If people want to waggle them selfs fit the Wii is still the cheaper option and if MS realistically wants to get in to that market they are going to be aggressive about it and undercut Ninty. Activision did it with Blur (it's now broken the top 10 since it went down to £24.99) and EA did it with BC2 (it sold 5 million again very aggressive pricing and 'free' DLC).

Now Sony on the other hand appears to be gearing towards augmenting their current and future games. But that's a debate for later. :p

How do you figure that?

Digital Foundries has taken a look at it and said there are some serious issues with input lag.

Regarding Kinect pricing from Aaron Greenburg (of Microsoft) as of an hour ago:

http://twitter.com/aarongreenberg/statuses/16188929221

No Kinect price announced yet, retail price estimates are purely speculative, final price & pack-in details are not yet determined.

If they haven't determined pricing yet, then I guess nobody would have the prices.

They still have till Nov or the month before to work out any lag that's still around even now, whatever lag is left the dev will just have to take into account like they do for MP gaming and so on. I think it'll work out well if devs can just use it right.
