Maybe I'm just the worst GT5 player in the world but I truly cannot comprehend the penalty system in GT5 (particularly in the license tests). It seems so random and stupid it's beyond words! I mean I've had races when I've rammed the back of the car in front of me (due to failing to brake quick enough) [which in many other times has got me disqualified] then as a direct result of that go off the track completely [which also has got me disqualified numerous other times] and the game disqualifies me for a slight brush with a car as I return to the track :s other times just going a pixel from the side of the track is enough to get me disqualified. The there is the whole thing with the AI being immune to the penalty system, they cut corners to get fast times (which would get you disqualified) and if they ram you, you get disqualified. Ok I think that is enough of my rant now...like I said maybe I'm just a crap driver but like to hear others thoughts on this?

Yep those license test will rack your brain but once you've got gold on them all they change your whole playing style by making you never wanting to touch another car or go off the track for fear for disqualification in a regular race.

I would think people do the seasonal events for the XP, not the credits. Credit grinding is easy on A-Spec and B-Spec anyways, grinding XP is another story.

Not taken much notice of the XP to be honest. Seems to open new levels for me roughly at the same time as I require the cars from the level. Credits have been my major problem. Seems to be a bit of a jump in car requirements mid-way through the expert category. Gone from needing 50k-200k cars to needing 5m cars. And I daren't upgrade my already insane racing Corvette to do the Like the Wind series...

I know what you mean, hit a similar wall too...need the 5m+ cars to keep making progress! I was very brave and entered in my tuned Veyron into the GT All Stars, big mistake!! I mean it out accelerated everything on the grid and it's top speed was well beyond the fastest car there (I've managed to get it upto ~427km/hr), but it had a tendency to get airborne rather easily and still weighted alot! basically it handled like a brick with a rocket engine :p oh and not to mention the 500,000 credit repair bill after doing the event  came close to last too.

i dont actually have this game, but i really like the idea of doing Nascar races on the Nordschleife ... is the seasonal event ending 3 days from now your only chance to do that?

I would imagine you can do it in Arcade mode too :)

Is it just me or does the AI in this game sometimes plain retarded?

I just did the Formula GT championship on B-Spec. One of the races was raining, so I put the Race: Rain tires on my Formula GT car. The rest of the drivers had normal racing tires (so they went super slow), and did not go into the pit once to change them. I ended up winning by a 9 lap margin.

I just finished the Dream car championship in the extreme series, the last two races, the AI did pit stops????? I beat them by over a min. No idea why. So yes, the AI is retarded.

I used a Race Modded Corvette ZR1 to win the "Like the Wind" series which then will get you the Motorola car. Do some mods on that and it blows away the GT All Stars.

Indeed, the Toyota Minolta is enough to win a lot of competitions easily. I'm currently squeezing every single last credit of my Formula GT.

I just bought a Formula GT, spent all day yesterday racing the new seasonal events to do it. With the right spending, the seasonal events can be very lucrative and I was promoted a few times. They are pretty easy, a little body lightening, a little engine massage and soft race tires and no race was too difficult. The only race I have left is the NASCAR on the ring, quite difficult.

The only race I have left is the NASCAR on the ring, quite difficult.

The key to it is a good set-up so you have the confidence it will grip. I started by increasing the rear downforce by 10 (helps the rear wheels stick), then increased them both equally until the rear downforce was maxed (max downforce due to the corners). Then I adjusted the acceleration differential towards understeer by about 10 (takes a little bite off the acceleration), and set the gearbox to the lowest speed.

May need a little adjustment for your driving style, but once you've got it gripped to the track it is brilliant fun. I think it is the single best race experience I've had in the game. The track is awesome and the speed of the car just makes you appreciate it all the more.

Ill try that. The AI makes it difficult to win because they do not seem to fight each other. Once they are in front of you they just go along for the ride. Without fighting each other, mistakes are rarely made.

Well, the Indy 500 race is a walk in the park! :p I'm currently on lap 110/200 (in the middle of my third pitstop), and I'm 6 laps ahead of everyone else. And I've got all three Rishloo albums as my soundtrack for the race. :)

My GT5 fix / future update list.

1. Add Doors can be opened in photo mode (can be done via future update).

2. Add Convertible tops can be user controlled while driving or in photo mode (can be done via future update).

3. Add Custom gear box ratios (Tuning Junkies)

4. Add Leader boards (Competitive egotistical junkies)

5. Fix Mazda Furai lights as they do not illuminate the road even though they are illuminated.

6. Fix PD you broke the custom music feature. fix it.

7. Fix driver animations weird gear shifting

8. Fix Car descriptions

9. Fix Audi R8 V10 (has wrong engine modeling).

10. Fix for non HUD users (me) I.E. fuel gauges not working, check engine, clocks, some gauges in cars not working correctly, BMW, McLaren, Mini Cooper.

11. Fix Gallardo spoiler does not animate

12. Fix Audi R10 has an extra 6th gear when it should be limited to 5.

13. Resolve! Cars over 10 million credits cannot be gifted (X2010 lames under lvl 30) just as the DLC cars can't.

3. Add Custom gear box ratios (Tuning Junkies)

I had to boot it up to check, but wow how strange. I'm sure other games in the series let you fine tune each gear, but I didn't notice until now that this isn't possible.

I'd like to add:

  1. Fix the whole online thing. Right now, I can see two people on my friends list in the XMB are playing GT, but there's no indication of that in the game. Also, why can we create our own "lounge" when we can also create a "room" on the public server. What's the difference? And why can't I easily invite people to either? Unless I'm being stunningly stupid, because all I want is "setup room -> invite people". Seems broken to me, but please prove me wrong.
  2. Plus, while I'm on the subject, say if I'm in a room but actually I don't fancy this race. Clicking "Leave the room" takes me back to the GT Home page. WTH? I just want to back to the lobby and choose a different room!
  3. I want a video editor. I know PD have said it would be too much to ask of the PS3, and I can understand that, but what's the point in being able to export the replays to the XMB if you can't do anything with them once they're there? Let me transfer it to my PC and edit it there myself, please?
  4. Let me see how much each race is worth before I get there. It's not too much to ask. I don't want to have to enter a race to find it's not going to give me much XP/cash, then back out and find another...
  5. Graphics improvements/more premium cars, more tracks, more events etc... But I just know it's not going to happen. If they did that, what could they put into GT6? Motorbikes? Now there's an idea....

Apart from that, I love this game and can't stop playing it.

You might not need to wait, couple of months before GT5 release

"The environment we have right now allows us to drive motorcycles, but we need to get Gran Turismo 5 done first," series' creator Kazunori Yamauchi told PSM3, as reported by CVG.

"Once that's out of the way, if there's a strong demand for bikes, that's something we'd consider."

The lounge is a private game for friends only to my knowledge. They join by going to the community tab (think it is that one), selecting your profile and selecting the "lounge" option. Takes you to their game. Not sure about inviting people to public games as I've not tried them. But I couldn't see any way to make public servers for friends only, which is what the lounge option seems to fill.

All I'd want in patches is the ability to fast-forward and rewind replays, and a save feature for the 24h races.

I see... except how can you tell who is online and whether they are waiting in their lounge?

And the thing about the public "rooms" is you get the chance to create your own, rather than jump into someone else's, and you get a 16 digit code for your room in the top-left of the screen. But again, how do you communicate that number to your friends? Well, maybe you can, but it doesn't seem obvious or simple to me. The whole online part of the game seems hashed together and slightly unfinished.

Twitter is a very useful tool for staying up to date on all of your interests. While I'm at work on my lunch breaks I usually always check my twitter to see whats going on in the gaming world and today came as quite a surprise as I noticed The great man himself Kaz_Yamauchi mentioned a new element coming around early February.

The tweet shown here

ね。RT @shibao_875: 来月には新しい要素が期待できる?かもw #GT5jp RT @Kaz_Yamauchi: リモートレース、そろそろ、といっても2月上旬あたりかな。RT @hagino: @Kaz_Yamauchi?

translates to

It? RT @shibao_875: next month is expected to be a new element ? w #GT5jp RT @Kaz_Yamauchi: Race remote soon, and I can say around early February. RT @hagino: @Kaz_Yamauchi ?

Twitter can sometimes require a bit of decoding especially when its being translated from Japanese to English but from what I can gather from this golden twitter nugget is we will either be getting a new element in Gran Turismo 5 (possibly the Pikes Peak course) and remote play or just remote play. Either way its great news.

Remote play coming soon

I really hope there's a new set of bonus races soon. I just won the latest five, and I'm currently at level 29, with my XP at 327,440 / 641,774. Another set with the exact same winnings, and I'll finally hit level 30.

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
