People Already Lining Up For Kinect, But They're Not Crazy

500x_kinect_queue.jpg

Microsoft's controller-free add-on for the Xbox 360 officially doesn't launch until November 4, but some clearly passionate Kinect fans are already lining up in New York City for its midnight launch. Crazy? Not really and here's why.

Microsoft is giving the first 3,000 people who line up and buy Kinect at the official launch party $150 USD worth of stuff?the cost of the camera add-on itself. If you're one of the 3,000 who queue up for the Toys R Us midnight launch in Times Square, you'll get a free copy of Kinect Sports, Kinect Joy Ride and a one year Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Kinect already comes with Kinect Adventures, so people fortunate/patient enough to get in on the Times Square midnight launch deal will have plenty to play.

Those guys you see above, snapped in line earlier today by Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg, will have first crack at the thing. If you can tolerate this kind of line-sitting and want free Kinect stuff, we'd recommend making plans sooner than later.

The Xbox maker will also be handing out "commemorative gear and prizes" for latecomers and memento seekers.

So it came out today in the US, did anyone go to pick it up or are you all to busy talking on a forum about it. :p

I thought it came out here today too, but looking on the wiki it is the 10th, which seems like an odd day for it to come out the day after a Call of Duty. :s

It's the 4th, dunno why the wiki says 10th.

I just realised its the 3rd, I thought it was the 4th, never mind, lol.

And it is definitely the 10th it is released in the UK.

Oh, UK date, I didn't check to see if the EU had the same dates as the US but I guess not, which makes sense when it comes to a device compared to a game or some software update.

Microsoft gives Kinect to Boys/Girls Clubs Nationwide

NEW YORK CITY ? Nov. 3, 2010 ? Microsoft is giving Kinect for Xbox 360 to every Boys & Girls Club in the country, the company announced Wednesday at a special event in New York City?s Times Square. Kinect goes on sale in the U.S. on Nov. 4.

All of the country?s 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs will each get a Xbox 360 console and two Kinect launch titles, ?Kinect Adventures? and ?Kinect Sports,? said Michael Delman, corporate vice president of global marketing for Microsoft?s Interactive Entertainment Business.

?We?re delighted to help make the kids from Boys & Girls Clubs some of the first to experience the benefits of active entertainment that only Kinect for Xbox 360 delivers,? Delman said. ?We developed Kinect to bring people together and give them a whole new way to play games, and we?re excited to give kids across the country the opportunity to jump in to the fun.?

Delman was joined in New York by actor and producer Mark Wahlberg, an alumnus and lifelong member of Boys & Girls Clubs, as well as children from local New York-area clubs. Wahlberg, who attributes much of his personal success to afternoons and evenings spent at his local Boys & Girls Club as a child, spoke in support of the announcement and later played Kinect with some of the kids at the event.

Karen McDonald, vice president of Program Youth Development Services for Boys & Girls Clubs of America, noted the positive social aspects of what Kinect brings to gaming and entertainment. ?Controller-free entertainment means everyone can jump into the action and play,? she said. ?No one feels left out, everyone participates, and it?s a great way to make sure these kids are staying active and fit while having fun.?

How Kinect Is Different

According to Molly O?Donnell, director of integrated marketing communications for Xbox 360, ?With Kinect, your whole body becomes the controller. It responds to your full body movements, hears your voice and really makes you a part of the game. We?ve seen first-hand how Kinect brings people together, encourages teamwork, creativity and active play, and we?re so excited to share that with Boys & Girls Club members around the country.?

Microsoft has been a long-time supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs, donating more than $150 million to help the charitable organization realize its goal of enabling young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens, O?Donnell said. The Club Tech program, founded with a donation from Microsoft in 1999, helps equip clubs with technology and computer training, empowering kids and staff members for real-world success.

?The vast majority of kids who go to Boys & Girls Clubs don?t have access to this kind of experience at home,? O?Donnell said. ?Kinect is fun for them and healthy for their bodies ? and it also gives them access to the latest technology, which can inspire kids and stretch their imaginations. It can help them think big, and have fun.?

Very nice. Bill Gates probably had a hand in that.

Microsoft predicts 5 million Kinect sales this holiday season.

Looks like the whole preorders selling out bit is gaining more truth since it seems MS has upped it's expectations from 3 million to 5 million now.

5 million??! Looks like MS was wrong about 3 million, lol. Would be more funny if this blew up in their face and ended up being like a million or less ;)

I think they have a good idea of what to expect, if anyone knows the preorder numbers and the demand from retail it's MS.

Not so fast Microsoft!

My link

Sure' date=' it'll probably sell a few tens of thousands of units around Christmas time, but then the sales will probably dry up completely.[/quote']

It'd be a huge win if MS can get lines outside a number of shops on the 4th. It's the best type of marketing/PR boost you could think of.

Please educate yourself before you make such ridiculous claims...

What do no lines for the Sony Move have to do with anything I said? Why is it ridiculous to see it as positive PR if you have lines outside stores for your product exactly?

Second, it was just hugely limited. In Wii Bowling, for example, I have relatively fine control over the spin I put on the ball; it's all in the wrist. With Kinect Bowling, I don't. Because it can only track my arms, not my hands. To put spin on the ball, you have to essentially flail your arms left or right so that the Kinect can see the movements you're making. It's a similar story in table tennis. There's no nuance or finesse.

Kinect Sports just sounds like it's going to be a chore...

Sarcasm tags were missing. :p

I was mainly pointing out that "others" said that midnight launches were irrelevant (of course when no one showed up for Move's). Kinect (and your comment) would say otherwise...

Figures it would be Audioboxer to pick out the negative needle in the positive review haystack

Oh, OK. I was wondering where I was wrong in my thinking.
