OMG, I got a negative vote! What for?

Recommended Posts

So basically what you're looking for is a forum where an MVC or above posts something and we are to all bow and chant "we're not worthy" so he/she gets an ego boost and no one hurts their sensitive feelings.....gotcha.

Not to mention, I could post 10,000 positive remarks and get 0 votes yet get 50 bad votes for a single post. Unless everyone votes on every post, I can guarantee you people will focus entirely on the negative and barely on the positive.

The voting is all a matter of opinion and how the reader interpretes the message. Opinions vary, and everyone is entitled to one. So why let a select few vote on an opinion and no one else? Especially, if the few all misinterpret the message.

Any way to hide the - from us Subbies? I wont ever neg vote anyway. Every contribution here is a contribution, even the crap that comes out of my mouth sometimes

Letting everybody downvote posts would ensue in massive chaos - you just know how certain users would be downvoted regardless of what they were actually posting. Or you'd have certain IRC regulars gang up on certain posts.

Letting only somewhat trusted community members downvote posts is a good compromise. Whether or not certain individuals who have it deserve the MVC badge is an entirely different discussion, ok, but one we shouldn't start.

At least reset all reputation to zero.

P.S. I'm a member of one of those forums with negative reputation activated and EVERYBODY has a red stripe under their profile photo with -100, 'cause haters are everywhere (and multiple accounts also). This is a step back for Neowin in my opinion. Also, there'll be a lot of Christians vs Muslims +/- fights and I don't predict anything positive coming in the near future for Neowin members - only hate, keyboard fighting and on-line revenge. We already have the User Rating in profiles! This is useless and it'll fail, but before failing it'll oppose many people against their buddies, 'cause it's also anonymous. Just wait and see.

I was unaware the IRC was a seperate "gang" of the user base. between the negatives and now this irc gang the underbelly of neowin is being exposed! I much preferred my ignorant rosey eyed view of her chest up until now.

If you are contributing on the site how you should be, then a - vote to your replies should be the least of your worries...

But if only MVCs and staff can downvote, then isn't this feature terribly underpowered? You can get upvoted numerous times by people for saying something clever or witty, but if you actually start doing bad things, you'll get downvoted a handful of times at it's best - and that won't damage the overall reputation of an user too much.

How do you think brentaal got the majority of his rep points? IRC regulars upvoting more or less subtle troll posts of his.

Exactly, that's why my suggestion would be more efficient.

and how did you get them? :alien:

Since you can't complain that you are voted down, what should one do if he firmly believes that he was given a negative vote unfairly. Will mods have right to upvote a comment downvoted by MVCs. If so how to bring this to their attention? I ask this because I have seen MVCs taking jabs at members who don't agree with them even when they are wrong and quoting the 'offending' members low post count as if the number of posts indicate commenter's quality.

This. Luckily, however, the "original" 10M posts thread isn't active - given the number of people who bitched at me (a fair few of whom, were MVCs), I'd probably be in negative numbers. Still, hopefully this new system works "as intended".

Why? The negative points just subtracts from the positive points. So if a person is warned, 20 rep points are deducted.

Because +40 and -30 will give you a whole different idea, than simply +10.

Or maybe I should've started my sentence with "OR" instead of "AND", because that would actually make some sense with the current mechanism.

Who even takes the Rep points system seriously? All the most upvoted members are the ones in the Real World Issues (Tabloid central) forum. No one cares. No one ever will.

should add the clique that is IRC are always in the +10's

(Y)

    • Given only Volume license customers and specific resellers can obtain the LTSC versions legitimately it seems likely that this has been tinkered with quite a lot!
    • Apple CEO Tim Cook confirms looming price hikes due to memory shortages by Hamid Ganji Image via Apple Memory and chip shortages have led to significant price increases for electronics over the past year, and it seems that more hikes are on the way for upcoming smartphones and computers. Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company is planning to increase the prices of some of its products due to the ongoing memory and storage shortages. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook confirmed the looming price hikes for Apple’s future products, adding that “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable.” He also said the company is doing its best to “mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.” The Apple CEO also noted that the allocation of a large portion of memory chips to AI companies has contributed to shortages in the market, resulting in lower supply at a time when demand for devices remains high. “We definitely need memory pricing and supply to return to reasonable levels for consumer products. That’s the bottom line,” Cook said. Cook also added that Apple is ready to use its vast cash reserves to help boost supply in the market because additional production capacity is needed. While he declined to specify how Apple plans to do that, he said the company will not build its own memory and storage factories despite its financial resources and silicon expertise. Cook did not provide further details on the scale of the price increases or which Apple products would be affected, though iPads and Macs could see higher prices sooner than other products. Apple’s next product launch event is scheduled for September, when the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone. It remains unclear whether the upcoming iPhones will be affected by the price increases, but given the current memory shortage, higher prices seem increasingly likely. There is currently no clear timeline for the end of the memory shortage. Samsung, one of the world’s three largest memory chip manufacturers, recently said the shortage could persist for several more years.
    • Downloads does not equal actual usage, even less when the app is pre-installed in some Galaxy phones.
    • +1000 to this, don't understand why they added that margin around the top bar, even the close button is a PITA to click without aiming. Ofc, this is just preview and hopefully they will revert such odd UX decision before hitting final version.
    • so the people who bought this will get a refund?
