OMG, I got a negative vote! What for?

Recommended Posts

Stackoverflow has quite an effective reputation system. Positive and negative votes are recorded separately for each question (so that they do not strictly cancel each other). Positive votes count more than negative votes for reputation; however for an individual question they have the same weight (1). Badges of various grades (bronze, silver and gold) are awarded for significant contributions.

I think Neowin could draw some useful ideas from it.

im not gonna read all these pages, so can you sum it up please? they did away with it?

Also what good are rep points for anyways? nothing right?

Too many complaints, too much abuse with the reputation system and it was pretty useless as Neowin wanted to use it as a system to ensure quality posts, which failed.

So they disabled it.

What a joke. Silly heavyhanded tactics like this is the reason why people hate the staff so much.

What should the staff have done - let the trolls abuse the system even more?

Disabling it until a better solution to reward helpful posts is found is the best compromise.
