I confess: I bought an iPad (and so far I love it)

you like them because the all mighty Steve has shown you the light and you now will only by his products. what ever the price and lack of features it has !

Wow your so witty, why not try to contribute instead acting like a complete dick.

Put some substance into your posts.

I love my iPad.

Also screw flash, HTML5 is the way of the future.

As it has been said numerous times, HTML 5 isn't the future. Give us one good reason Flash is bad. I'm on a tablet right now that runs flash perfectly, and it never crashes like you would like to think. You are just proof of how blindly some of Apple's customers believe Steve Jobs.

All of these "I got an iPad" threads go the same way every time. The iPad is good at what it does, but that is very limited (no flash, no printing, locked app store, no multitasking no keyboard, no camera, no USB ports, no memory card slots, no pen imput, etc) Moderators should really lock these threads, they get absolutely nowhere. Some people like Pads, others don't.

And its people trying to rain down on somebodys happiness, you don't like the iPad

Then get the hell out of the thread. You don't like apple, then Get out of the thread, just STFU about all YOUR negative things regarding it and get over it.

If somebody doesn't like PS3, or XBOX, or APPLE, or MICROSOFT they blast the crap through everybody's threads, if you want to have group therapy bashing somebody's stuff, go have a group orgy in a group session praising your product and bashing everything else.

These threads shouldn't be locked, it's people coming in raining on their stuff that should stay out

People said cars wouldn't be popular because of noise and smell, guess what happened, people said computers wouldn't be popular, guess what, people said we wouldn't fly, guess what.

If you don't like the iPad, then Get the F out, you don't like apple, then get the F out, thread started created thread cause he likes his iPad, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO BASH HIM, HIS LIKES OR HIS OPINIONS, GET OVER YOURSELF

i do like the iphone but there is better cheaper options out there

Better for you, you mean ?

And I'm not chanting anybodys name, IMO jobs is not a god, his name doesn't deserve to be chanted. I do own 4 of his products compared to the crapload of other gadgets and electronics I own, but just because known an apple product, doesn't make me a fanboy or a apple lover, or follower. It just means I bought a product from a company

most phones do the exact same thing now of days so there is not much between them

Steve Jobs is our shepherd we are his sheep

So does that mean you bash it just because it's apple ? If most do the exact same thing, then why bash it

most phones do the exact same thing now of days so there is not much between them

Oh my...

 That's some funny ****!

what websites use html5 anyway? does an ipad have enough processor power to play video wrapped in html5?

No problems here, but I don't know of many sites that stream video Other then Hulu, netflix, and YouTube and there are apps in the AppStore specifically for all of those

how many hours of active browsing while listening to streamed music does it get on the battery?

I get a litttle above 8 while listening to music, using stumbled upon and browsing forums

how is browsing and posting on forums on it?

I'm using it now, no problems on any forums I visit

what kinds of video do you watch on the net that isn't flash? and how long did it take you to hunt down these ipad compatable streaming video sites?

other then occasional YouTube and netflix i don't stream much video with it, but i do have videos on it, but it s local on the device, not streamed

do you use a case or some other accessory to prop it up on your lap or a table so you can use both hands on it?

I have and use the Apple case, but rarely prop it up, currently im sitting on the couch with my nieces watching some cartoon, and it's propped on a leg

how fast is it to switch windows. i mean apps. i mean tasks. for example, if i have an im running is there a taskbar or something i can switch from my browser when someone's messages me?

Switches programs quickly, hit 1 button and select another, it's as quick if not quicker then hitting the start menu and selecting a program

what are it's wireless networking capabilities? can i stream media from my pc to it on teh same network? will it work with my router? do i need a mac to take full advantage of streaming or is it limited to osx?(ok that one was totally unfair)

it's wireless is N, yes you can stream, yes from your PC on same network, and in some cases even if not on the same network depending on the app, and no it's not limited to OSX, my streaming machine is a Windows 7 Self Built. And shouldn't have problems with your router as long as it follows 802.11 and IP standards

how is typing documents on it? taking notes in a class? what kind of wpm can you get on it?

typing a document is fine, i can create word docs, PDF, as well as sync online to my laptop and desktop using programs like Evernote, and Pages. My WPM is the same regardless if i use the onscreen KB, or attach my own.

what kind of apps does it have in the app store? can i buy and install non apple approved apps from a 3rd party?

it has all kinds of apps in the AppStore, if you have itunes installed (free) you can browse and see for yourself. And yes you can install non approved apps if you want, just like my Sprint cellphone, if i want to install non approved apps, i have to Jailbreak it.

can i plug a full sized keyboard to it for typing? what about a mouse?

Yes you can via Bluetooth, and i have used various kinds ranging from Apples to Dells Bluetooth keyboards and each works fine, a mouse you can if you jailbreak it and the app supports it

what websites use html5 anyway? does an ipad have enough processor power to play video wrapped in html5?

Youtube has been using HTML5 encoding since at least January. I haven't found a video yet on their site that doesn't play right. It also has the added benefit of not displaying ads and annoying annotations in the video. win.

how many hours of active browsing while listening to streamed music does it get on the battery?

I have to charge it about once a week. That's with lots of browsing and Plants vs Zombies playing

how is browsing and posting on forums on it?

It's Safari. It works as you would expect Safari to. Good plus though - no annoying Flash ads

what kinds of video do you watch on the net that isn't flash? and how long did it take you to hunt down these ipad compatable streaming video sites?

As mentioned most Youtube videos work fine, as do DailyMotion and a few others.

do you use a case or some other accessory to prop it up on your lap or a table so you can use both hands on it?

I use the Apple case. Usually though I just hold it in my hand or prop it up a knee

how fast is it to switch windows. i mean apps. i mean tasks. for example, if i have an im running is there a taskbar or something i can switch from my browser when someone's messages me?

As fast as switching is on an iPhone. It doesn't multitask. We get it.

what are it's wireless networking capabilities? can i stream media from my pc to it on teh same network? will it work with my router? do i need a mac to take full advantage of streaming or is it limited to osx?(ok that one was totally unfair)

It's not some alien piece of equipment. It works fine with any router and streaming from my home Windows 7 PC works with no problem

how is typing documents on it? taking notes in a class? what kind of wpm can you get on it?

I don't type fast anyway, but I take notes at work with it without an issue.

what kind of apps does it have in the app store? can i buy and install non apple approved apps from a 3rd party?

You can jailbreak it, a task that takes literally 10 seconds. 3rd party apps generally suck anyway.

can i plug a full sized keyboard to it for typing? what about a mouse?

No and nope. That's why you should have a normal computer. It's a tablet. Not a full fledged PC replacement.

Any kind of video playback on a mobile device kills battery, but not as bad as a flash video...

It may be on a mac laptop because it uses full software CPU cycles because Apple is closed up platform and didn't want to give support for Flash player like other OSs did.

Just recently they opened necessary APIs for Flash to use OSX.

Instead of spitting on the technology, you should look for the real cause of why Flash sucks on Mac platform. It's because of Apple not Adobe.

As far as Flash on mobile devices.. You are repeating Jobs' comments.. Flash is not taking any more battery then me watching a video, running a 3rd party app on iPhone or whatever.

It works fine and my battery still lasts longer than iPhone 4 on Nexus One and Android 2.2

I'm not evangelizing html5 as the end all be all flash killer nor saying that flash has no place on mobile devices, but as far as I know there is a difference between running a flash video in a browser on a device like the iPad versus playing an h.264 video via quicktime which has dedicated hardware acceleration on the chip.

Does Flash have the same level of hardware acceleration on mobile devices yet?

Forgot to add that when I get an IM, I get a popup on screen, I can hit close or reply, if I hit reply it brings up the app that i use for IM, and then I just start typing, I can use msnim, aol, as well as trillian and connect to others, even facebooks chat

No problems here, but I don't know of many sites that stream video Other then Hulu, netflix, and YouTube and there are apps in the AppStore specifically for all of those

LOL..and thats the problem rigth there.. you don't want to know.. so you look for those you can justify.

There are TONS of video streaming sites with TV shows (every single TV network uses Flash to stream full episodes of their shows on their sites) and they all use FLash.. I believe that some of them specifically said that they won't be making Apple specific sites because they dont' want to dumb down the functionality and interactivity of their sites.

We are talking NBC, CBS, ABC, USA , Amazon Video Store etc etc..

Here's what some of them say:

Other media companies, such as Disney and CBS, have accommodated Jobs on some level. Disney has created an iPad app, and CBS is trying to offer a limited number of shows via the iPad's browser. However, news of media companies as large as NBC and Time Warner shunning Jobs and his radical approach can't be good for the makers of the world's most popular smartphone and tablet.

As I said 70% of the web. Even with CBS who is offering some videos and shows online they are not all available for iPad or iPhone, only limited ones. And this is just video.. Of course, Flash has so much more then video. You build full blown interactive applications. One example is wildly popular music portal Grooveshark where you can listen to all songs for free and you can buy them too and because Apple simply doesn't want to allow them (http://mobile.grooveshark.com/iphone).. Do you know why Grooveshark is using Flash? Because it allows them to stream DRMed songs to you for free without the fear of getting downloaded.. That's why they have big contracts with music industry.. Something you will never get with HTML5 or making it an iPhone/iPad app because Apple wants even developers to go through them for this stuff so they can money.

Also.. another great example is online editing platform suite built completely in Flash called Aviary (photo editing, video editing, audio editing etc etc).. Something you will never see in HTML5..

HTML5 is simplistic approach to web.. it's definitely needed for regular html websites, for news sites, for shopping sites..that's all great.. but when it comes to creating immersive online tools and experiences it just becomes a hassle and not the right tool for the job, not to mention that it can't do certain things at all. And that's before you realize that there are no real tools to build creative HTML5 applications and UIs.

And btw, you will never see websites like this done in HTML5.. it least for another decade and questionable whether it's going to be HTML5 then.

http://vimeo.com/13702935

other then netflix, I DO NOT CARE. i dont give a crap about CBS, NBC,ABC,USA, or anyother broadcast station. i stream music using Last.FM / Pandora, why because i also use it on my Xbox 360

you want to watch it, then fine thats your choice, THEN DONT FREKIN BUY IT. frankly i could care less why you dont like the iPad, i like my iPad, it does what i want, it goes where i go on my desktop/laptop.

as far as flash, i barely have a use for it, literally i went for months without even having it installed on my main machine, i didnt notice untill last month or something. i could give a rats a** about HTML5 or Flash, but because of the problems i have had with Flash, i dont care for it, literally the ONLY thing i have seen shy of Hulu use flash is Advertisements, every other site i visit doesnt use it

i barely watch TV, i only have CableTV because my internet is bundled with it. i can Watch ABC if i want, because there is an app for it, i have it, but i dont watch it. the only thing i have my TV for is Blu-Ray / HDDVD / Netflix / Xbox360 / PS3 / DVD

and what i find suprising is your bashing apple, yet behind Adobe, which does the same thing regarding Flash, you want to watch flash how many programs can you use to do that? how many programs can you use to CREATE it ? if i want to create HTML i can go to a DOS computer and do an " Edit index.htm " and create a frekin webpage, let alone use ANY other computer using ANY OS and ANY txt program. im not limited to 1 software package.

im also not limited to the App Store, i can jailbreak my iPad and use Cydia and install any bloody app i want that somebody creates for the device, apple approved or not.

and apple isnt the only company that locks their device, i cant use my Sprint phone on another carrier, Crap i cant even install an app unless its in sprints store. yet nobody complains about the cell phone companies, but HOLY CRAP APPLE IS DOING IT BURN IT DOWN

LOL..and thats the problem rigth there.. you don't want to know.. so you look for those you can justify.

Plenty of programs write to SWF format.. Adobe just makes the best authoring tools. SWF format has been open (had their specifications open) since 2008. That's why there are plenty of apps that write to SWF format and so forth. Namely one you surely heard of SWiSH.

And I bash Apple because they are not the same as Adobe. Adobe makes software and software alone. They brought us some of the truly revolutionary and evolutionary software to interent while everyone else was standing still like Microsoft, HTML in general.

They have improved capabilities of Flash beyond what I could have expected.. they made sure that you can connect to any services or APIs from Flash not only Adobe's. They made it possible to create some stunning video stuff including live camera streaming and so forth that was not possible prior to them doing it. And they of course made it available to be cross platform. If we were to listen to Apple we should build apps on every platform separately so they can make money off it. What a smug, nonsensical way of looking at it. But hey, it makes sense to Apple, cause it's in their interest.

They have problems sure.. and I have my own set of complaints for them.. but we are not talking about Adobe.. we are talking about the fact that Apple as always is expecting everyone to bend over to them, to make their platforms and services work for Apple's bottom line and people defend it. Apple wants all services, products and development tools to be theirs. In addition, all content you buy, you consume on your Apple devices is again, for the most part tied to them alone.

They are closed up, they sabotage everyone who tries to offer something that gives people something for free when they want to charge for it and so forth. They are just bad company and they are bad for the industry, for internet, for everything technology wise because a model where one man, one company controls everything and tells us what we can watch and what we can't, what we can run and what we can't on the devices WE PAID for is evil any way you look at it and should not be supported in any way.

Remember the Mp3 players before the iPod, how popular were they then. Vs now, let alone it's popularity BEFORE it hit Windows compatability.

Same with Tablets ( not convertible laptops ). Before the iPod hardly anybody was making an Mp3 player, most didn't know what it was.

Now everybody is coming out with a tablet. Before the iPad theee was what like 3 tablets and they were a couple grand each

I was really really hoping for the HP Slate to come out, even after i got my iPad, but They changed it, then canned it. Now it's enterprise and will include a Palm OS, because it's enterprise you can bet it will be expensive in comparison. And include a lot less if not be just a mobile monitor

And as far as closed, look at the MS Zune, it's even more closed then the iPod touch. Nobody bash's that. Heck you even need special money to get stuff off that.

PlayForShure- yea good one there, MS closed it down, people that support it are out in the cold unable to play their stuff if they change computers, let alone OS, reload. And multiple companies and MP3 players used that. I will admit apple's drm wasn't any better, but I can convert my apple drm for non drm(with cost)

Apple is not the only kid on the block, almost every company does the same, but yet you bash apple

And who was offering a service for free that apple has shut down ?

Flash is alright. However, it's been on the way out for some time now. No one really cares for it. Certainly no web designer/developer I speak to care for it. It was hot in 2000 when people were building all those cool experimental art sites with it and "cutting edge" web design magazines were filled with trendy vector art and pixel fonts. Vector art and transparency because they were the cool things that one could do with Flash. Pixel fonts because people were obsessed with small type then, and small antialiased type was hard to read in Flash. Not that many people actually built anything useful with it back then, but I digress.

These days JavaScript is being used to build the cool experimental stuff. ActionScript isn't really on the radar anymore. People don't really care if you have ActionScript in your resume. That's the reality of the current web industry. Developers have voted and Flash has lost. JavaScript is the preferred technology for the vast majority of new web applications being built. The killer apps like Gmail require JS. Flash? It's killer app was probably YouTube. Which no longer requires it. If it were not for Video, Flash might have been on the way out even sooner.

Another challenge for Flash is that Adobe is the only one with any interest in advancing the state of the art for it. The result? We've had awful performance on Linux for years - on full-fat computers too. We're not even talking mobile devices. On the other hand Google, Apple, Mozilla and Microsoft are competing with each other in advancing the state of the art of JavaScript in their browsers. Every new browser release seems to come with "now 10% faster JavaScript execution thann xyz!".

    • 7 Days: Windows 11 turns five, Ford made a mistake, and Starlink plans direct mobile service by Aditya Tiwari 7 Days is a weekly roundup of picks of what's been happening in the world of technology - written with a dash of humor, a hint of exasperation, and an endless supply of (black) coffee. This week's highlights include Apple's $4 billion class-action lawsuit, a smartphone with a 14,000 mAh battery, Google catching up with Anthropic, and the Steam Summer Sale 2026. Let's get started. You can check out the recent issues of the 7 Days weekly roundup. Windows 11 turns five Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system completed five years of existence on June 24 this week. According to the latest data, the controversial operating system now runs on almost 72% of Windows PCs worldwide. The launch of Windows 11 had several dramatic twists and an entire preview build leaked ahead of launch. Ford made a mistake Many would agree that one of the biggest mistakes the automobile industry made was surrendering to the giant touchscreens and removing physical buttons. However, Ford made even more. The company executives said they made a mistake by replacing human engineers with AI. Ford admitted that AI couldn't replace experienced engineers and the company is rehiring veterans to improve quality and cut recall costs. Starlink mobile service Elon Musk's SpaceX wants to use its massive constellation of satellites to power your phone's network. The company is reportedly considering building a terrestrial mobile network to complement Starlink’s satellite coverage and planning to sell mobile phone plans directly to customers in the US as part of a wider expansion of Starlink. It addressed problems with localization, playback issues with certain MP4 files, and performance issues on websites that perform multiple encryption operations simultaneously. Ubuntu Livepatch: Canonical's zero-downtime service Livepatch arrived on Arm64 devices running Ubuntu Core 26 and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Livepatch allows users to apply important kernel updates without any service interruption or rebooting. AMD 26.6.2 driver: The new driver version for Radeon hardware owners brought FSR 4.1 upscaling tech to an entire generation of its products: the RX 7000 series. However, the 26.6.2 FSR driver flew dark clouds over users, breaking many Windows PCs and causing a yellow bang or other launch failures on Windows 10. AMD later pushed the 26.6.3 Hotfix update to fix the issues. Goodbye Notion email: It's been a little over a year since the AI-powered email client launched. The company has announced its shutdown, which will take effect on September 22, and said it doesn't see the point in maintaining a frontend email client when people are moving towards automation. Ventoy version 1.1.14: The biggest change in the Rufus alternative is an updated Secure Boot shim file to resolve the UEFI CA 2023 issue, a compatibility problem that affected Secure Boot environments on some systems. This week in hardware news Image: Valve Catch up on some of the latest software news updates that arrived throughout the week: 14,000 mAh battery: Yes, that's something that iPhone users can only dream of. But a Chinese company is reportedly developing a smartphone with a 14,000mAh battery. If it ever sees daylight, it would be the largest battery ever on a smartphone, possibly offering a week of backup on a single charge. Steam Machine prices: Valve finally confirmed the Steam Machine's pricing. Starting at $1,049 for the 512GB option, storage and the included controller are the biggest differences among the four variants presented. Xbox just got more expensive: Rising costs of storage and memory prompted Microsoft to raise prices. Xbox Series X|S models wth 512GB storage will cost $100 extra, and 1TB models will cost $150 extra. However, the Redmond giant discounted the 2TB models. New NVIDIA supercomputers: The company announced plans to deploy 35 high-performance (HPC) AI supercomputers across Europe this year, primarily at national supercomputer centers, AI factories, and research institutes. Fast fast memory: Samsung built the UFS 5.0 storage solution, which pushes the data transfer speeds to 10.8 GB/s on mobile devices. It can open doors for faster local AI performance, which otherwise doesn't look promising under the current scenario. Custom chips for TikTok: Qualcomm is reportedly in talks with ByteDance to build custom video chips optimized for its massive data center workloads. ByteDance needs hardware that can help it ingest, process, and serve billions of short-form videos daily. OpenAI Jalapeño: The AI giant announced its first custom-designed AI chip developed in partnership with Broadcom. Jalapeño is designed specifically for large language model inference and is the first product from a multi-generation compute platform being developed by OpenAI. Galaxy A27 5G: The new mid-range smartphone from Samsung arrived with a platter of updates over A25 5G, including a 120Hz refresh rate, Infinity-O punch-hole camera design, expanded AI features, and more. Qualcomm takes on NVIDIA: The chipmaker baked the new Dragonfly CPU, High Bandwidth Compute technology, and AI chips to challenge NVIDIA in the AI data center market. Qualcomm said its new lineup improved per-watt performance, token throughput, and total cost of ownership for AI data centers. IBM goes sub-1nm: The company reached a semiconductor milestone by announcing the world's first sub-1-nanometer chip technology, based on a 0.7nm (7-angstrom) node. It can pack nearly 100 billion transistors onto a chip the size of a fingernail. This week in Google News Image: Google Catch up on some of the latest Google news updates that arrived throughout the week: What to expect from the Pixel 11 series: The upcoming lineup is expected to feature four different variants and a price hike due to the global memory shortage. Read our detailed coverage to know about the expected Pixel 11 specs. Stopping Google: The Free Software Foundation Europe urged the European Commission to stop Google from silently reinstalling AI models and requiring registration. Users should be able to fully uninstall AI-based features from Android devices and access interoperability features. Chasing Anthropic: The Claude-maker is making new strides every day in the AI world, but the search giant is struggling to catch up. Google is said to be reshuffling its AI coding "strike team" it created roughly about two months ago, turning it into a broader model-training group amid talent losses at DeepMind. New Google Play billing: Google has faced a long legal battle with Epic Games, and the search giant is rolling out a redesigned Play Store billing and fee structure. Available in the US, UK, and the European Economic Area, it will take effect on June 30. Error-free Sheets? A new feature in Google Sheets allows Gemini to inspect formula errors and apply corrections directly in the spreadsheet. Google said the new feature can handle pretty much everything from basic arithmetic to very complex calculations. Breeze through airports: Google Wallet became the first digital wallet to integrate with TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, a program that enables travelers to move through airport security checkpoints using facial recognition instead of a physical ID or boarding pass. Built-in computer control: Gemini 3.5 Flash got a built-in tool called Computer Use, which allows developers to build agents that navigate browsers, mobile interfaces, and desktop applications. Google Finance: The redesigned platform is now out of beta. Google has added several new features, including portfolio tracking, scheduled market briefings, and a dedicated Android app. An iOS app is planned for later in 2026. This week in Apple News Image: Apple Catch up on some of the latest Apple news updates that arrived throughout the week: Trade secrets reportedly exposed: Apple's manufacturing partner in India, Tata Electronics, confirmed a cybersecurity attack on its systems that may have exposed trade secrets of Apple and Tesla. Hackers reportedly stole up to 630 GB of data and posted up to 200,000 files on the dark web. Grab your payout: Apple is facing a class-action lawsuit in the UK and might end up paying $4 billion (£3 billion) if it loses. The iPhone-maker has been accused of trapping users in iCloud by restricting rivals from fully accessing iOS. The tribunal recently set a full trial date for October 2028. iOS 27 Beta 2: Apple's latest iPhone update is moving forward, and a new beta was pushed this week. While iOS 27 Beta 2 for developers pushed several bug fixes across the system, the AirPort Utility was deprecated; it's no longer available to new users. Price hike: Just like others, Apple has raised prices of several MacBook and iPad models, including the MacBook Neo, which now starts at $699. This comes after reports that this year's iPhone will also become expensive. Second-gen iPhone Fold: While the world is desperate to see Apple's foldable iPhone, leakers have started to talk about its second generation. Apple is expected to launch a successor in Fall 2027, featuring a wider folding display while reusing the same screen found in the first generation. The search for memory: Apple is reportedly looking at blacklisted Chinese companies amid rising memory chip prices. The company is seeking clearance from the Trump administration to purchase memory from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). This week in Meta news Image: Meta Catch up on some of the latest Meta, WhatsApp, and Instagram updates that arrived throughout the week: WhatsApp gets a new final boss: Mark Zuckerberg announced that CRED's Kunal Shah will become the next global head of WhatsApp, as Will Cathcart steps down and moves to a new role at Meta. The social media giant invested money in CRED through a Series H funding round. AI glasses in 26 styles: A new line of Meta Glasses launched in partnership with EssilorLuxottica. Starting at $299, it comes in more than two dozen styles across different colors, lenses, and frames. More ways to doomscroll: Instagram for TV is now available on Samsung smart TVs launched in 2020 and later years. The company also announced that it's testing several new features on Instagram for TV, bringing it closer to YouTube and Netflix. This week in AI news Image: Microsoft Catch up on the latest artificial intelligence news updates that arrived throughout the week: Water-saving data center: Microsoft is building a gas-powered AI data center with a capacity of 2 gigawatts. The company will deploy a closed-loop cooling system, saying that its total lifecycle water use will be "only a fraction of that consumed annually by a typical fast-food restaurant.” OpenAI beats Claude Mythos: GPT-5.5-Cyber got a limited release for verified defenders. It scored 85.6% on CyberGym, compared with 81.8% for GPT-5.5 and 83.8% for Claude Mythos 5. The AI giant also announced a limited preview of its new GPT-5.6 model series, whose flagship model, GPT-5.6 Sol, is targeted at demanding reasoning and agentic workloads. Proceed with caution: The Trump administration instructed OpenAI to limit the distribution of GPT-5.6 to a small group of government-approved partners rather than the general public, as has happened in the past. Claude Tag: Anthropic launched its new AI teammate for Slack, enabling teams to delegate tasks to Claude directly within Slack channels. What makes it different is that it's designed to operate as a shared assistant for an entire team rather than a single user. Challenging US dominance: The UK government has funded £60 million ($70 million) to Oxford and UCL to keep the country in the AI race by building open-source, low-hardware alternatives. The two organizations will share the money over six years. Paying for AI development: One cost is the loss of human jobs. Oracle laid off about 21,000 employees (13% of its workforce) amid increasing AI adoption. The software giant said that AI advancement and adoption "may continue to result in reductions to our workforce." GitHub strips features: It removed the ability to manually detect an AI model from its Copilot Free and Student plans. In other words, its automatic routing system is the only way to choose a model. Are you a copycat? Anthropic accused Alibaba of creating about 25,000 fraudulent accounts to copy Claude's capabilities at scale. It told US lawmakers that operators linked to Alibaba generated 28.8 million exchanges with Claude between April 22 and June 5, 2026. Reserve my memory: The semiconductor company Micron revealed that AI companies are spending billions to lock up its memory years in advance. Its customers have locked in $22 billion worth of memory supply commitments. Another AI battle: A publisher group that collectively owns 400 newspapers sued OpenAI and Microsoft for scraping their content to build AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Copilot without compensation. Anthropic AI ban: The US government partially reversed the Anthropic AI ban, allowing it to restore Claude Mythos 5. However, it can only be deployed for a limited set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure. You can check out Taras's freshly baked Microsoft Weekly roundup to catch up on all the interesting stories this week. This week in science news Image by Pascal Küffer via Pexels Catch up on some of the latest science and out-of-this-world updates that arrived throughout the week: 13 billion-year-old secret: Scientists found that the universe's first molecule (helium hyride) reacted with hydrogen much faster in cold temperatures than previously believed. It's a new breakthrough that changes our understanding of early star formation. Cosmic Living Fossil: Astronomers found CR3, a surprisingly pristine 11.5-billion-year-old galaxy dubbed a "living fossil." It suggests the universe's first generation of stars formed much later than previously assumed. Einstein's 100-year-old theory: Thanks to relativity, researchers calculated that clocks on Mars tick 477 microseconds faster per day than on Earth. This minute gravitational difference is crucial for synchronizing future interplanetary space missions. Don't panic: NASA's James Webb Telescope finally eliminated the threat of asteroid 2024 YR4 striking the moon in 2032. The rocky giant will give us a safe fly-by without causing any harm. This week in gaming? The latest issue of Pulasthi's Weekend PC Game Deals curates several exciting games on sale this week. RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition and Voidwrought have replaced the old titles in this week's Epic Games Store giveaway. For Xbox Free Play Days, the new titles include House Flipper 2, Blades of Fire, and Assetto Corsa Competizione. Steam Summer Sale 2026 kicked off with discounts for everything from the newest games and retro gems to all sorts of DLC packs, until July 9. Meanwhile, NVIDIA GeForce NOW added support for several new titles, including Dark Scrolls, SAND: Raiders of Sophie, and EMPULSE. That said, here are some more stories from the gaming world: Age of Empires Mobile comes to PC, here's how to carry over progress from your phone Xbox Insiders get Xbox 360 achievements and Gamertag character upgrades Grand Theft Auto VI pricing revealed alongside Ultimate Edition and pre-loading details Sony announces Bungie layoffs that will affect "significant number of employees" From the review corner This week, Steven published a review of the TerraMaster F4-425 Pro AI-powered NAS, featuring an all-metal exterior on the lines of the four-bay F4-425 series. Powered by the octa-core Intel Core N350, the TerraMaster F4-425 Pro is highly energy-efficient, operates quietly, and offers three M.2 slots. On the flip side, OpenClaw support requires removing security hardening (SPC), AI requires a paid subscription, the software feels like a beta, and the rubber feet constantly come unstuck. ZimaBoard 2 1664 Starter Kit Another NAS setup reviewed this week is the ZimaBoard 2 by IceWhale Technology. It comes in a small footprint with great modern hardware through a combo of Intel N150 and DDR5 memory support. On the downside, the memory is not upgradeable, ZimaOS is a bit barebones, factory reset requires USB flashing, and there is no automatic backup via the mobile app. Synology's BeeCamera software Christopher wrote his review of the software that powers BeeCamera Plus and said "the BeeCamera app is a great way to add private home monitoring to your network but there are some limitations." It's free with an easy setup process, fast response time, and good AI and detection features. However, there is no desktop version; it only works with Synology cameras, some configurations are difficult to set up on a phone, and it lacks the features of the surveillance station. • Zen Browser 1.21.4b by Razvan Serea Zen Browser is a privacy-focused, open-source web browser built on Mozilla Firefox, offering users a secure and customizable browsing experience. It emphasizes privacy by blocking trackers, ads, and ensuring your data isn't collected. With Zen Mods, users can enhance their browser experience with various customization options, including features like split views and vertical tabs. The browser is designed for efficiency, providing fast browsing speeds and a lightweight interface. Zen Browser prioritizes user control over the browsing experience, offering a minimal yet powerful alternative to traditional web browsers while keeping your online activity private. Zen Browser’s DRM limitation Zen Browser currently lacks support for DRM-protected content, meaning streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max are inaccessible. This is due to the absence of a Widevine license, which requires significant costs and is financially unfeasible for the developer. Additionally, applying for this license would require Zen to be part of a larger company, similar to Mozilla or Brave. Therefore, DRM-protected media won't be supported in Zen Browser for the foreseeable future. Zen Browser offers features that improve user experience, privacy, and customization: Privacy-Focused: Blocks trackers and minimizes data collection.
