Encoders and Converters

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I'm an Editor and have to wade though millions of types of encoded videos weekly...

When I use individual clips, I have to convert them to a format that final cut, and/or After effects understands.

I usually use Final Cut or Vegas to convert them, but this takes quite a bit of time, setting in and out points and matching the bitrates, and frame sizes.

Also, some of the clips don't get encoded properly...

So I was wondering...

What do you guys use to encode/transcode video?

I'm after something that's reliable,

complexity doesn't really matter,

nor does cost,

nor does speed.

But something that can handle a wide range of video formats.

Any Suggestions?

I don't do a lot of video work, but I tend to use SUPER for transcoding. Plenty of options and formats and gets the job done. They win the award for possibly worst web design ever though: to download, you have to click on a link at the bottom of this page (found from google): http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html then "Download and use" near the top of the next page, then find the download link at the bottom of the resulting page. For some reason linking to the pages out of sync doesn't seem to work, it's retarded. But nevertheless, if you can find the link, it's worth a shot.

Other programs I've heard good things about are MeGUI and Handbrake.

EDIT: just realised you're running MacOS (presumably if you're using Final Cut). In which case, Handbrake supports OSX.

I don't do a ton of stuff, just basic conversions for web dev postings.

But converting I found a fairly simple free program it does video, audio, and images... http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

It's not advanced at all though, just basic.

Brilliant thanks, Ill check that out! :)

I work on both systems, but mainly Mac.

Ive heard of SUPER, and checked it out once but your right, the website made me think it was a really old and extinct program!

Ill download it now, thanks! :D

My god your right, their site is confusing! :s

I'am a HD guru.

Mainly Xvid4psp 5 for encoding media files.

Aha, that's useful, thanks :)

I use handbrake on a server that auto converts video files!

Ahh, Handbrake... Thanks for the suggestion, but me and Handbrake don't quite get on! :(

    • Amazon Deal: These AMD RX 9070 XT GPUs are very good offers by Sayan Sen Following the release of AMD's new RX 9070 GRE last week for $549 (our review), AMD currently has a couple of great deals on the more powerful 9070 XT wherein the GPU is on sale for $650. We already covered the Gigabyte Gaming model a couple of days ago which is still live at that price. Aside from that, the white ICE variant is also at the same price (purchase link under the specs table down below). This is interesting to note considering white cards are generally more expensive as they come with a premium attached. Similar to the Gaming model, the ICE card too employs Gigabyte's WINDFORCE cooling system which combines multiple design elements such as alternate-spinning Hawk fans, a vapor chamber, and composite heat pipes to manage heat dissipation. The Server-grade Thermal conductive gel further helps in this department. The inclusion of a semi-passive cooling mode allows the fans to remain inactive under low workloads, which allows for reduced noise operation during lighter usage. There is dual BIOS switch that allows toggling between performance and silent modes. The tech specs of the card are given in the table below: Specification Value Boost Clock Up to 3060 MHz (Reference Card: 2970 MHz) Game Clock Up to 2520 MHz (Reference Card: 2400 MHz) Stream Processors 4096 Memory Size 16 GB Memory Type GDDR6 Memory Clock 20 Gbps Memory Bus Width 256-bit PCI Express Interface PCI Express 5.0 Max Resolution 7680 × 4320 Maximum Displays Supported 4 Display Outputs 2 × DisplayPort 2.1a 2 × HDMI 2.1b Card Dimensions 288 × 132 × 56 mm (L × W × H) (2.7 slot) Recommended Power Supply 750 W Power Connectors 3 × 8-pin PCIe Get it at the link below: GIGABYTE Radeon™ RX 9070 XT Gaming OC ICE 16G Graphics Card (GV-R907XGAMINGOCICE-16GD): $649.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) (Was: $750) If your budget is lower, check this Nvidia RTX 5060 Ti 8GB deal out for only $330 wherein you get the latest James Bond game free. • What about it? The old MV2 version will not work.
    • Wow, this is some Iran, Cuba, China, Russia, North Korea-level citizen surveillance right there, the UK's government has gone totally mad. Power trip indeed, their politicians are totally out of control about this issue. They're starting to cross limits I wouldn't have imagined, to be honest. British people, fight this, your privacy and freedoms are in danger. Vote this government out of power.
