PS3 finally hacked?

Recommended Posts

Wow!

Why would you want Sony to lose the battle against piracy? You realise that it's not just Sony that will get hit hard by this? There are lots of smaller developers that don't have massive budgets and possibly saw the PS3 as the better option to release stuff on due to the unlikelyhood of piracy denting sales.

Some peoples hatred towards the bigger corporations is so blinkered at times :(

Did I say I encouraged piracy anywhere?

Its not just piracy the devices are going to be used for ... rolleyes.gif

Did I say I encouraged piracy anywhere?

I realise you didn't, but rest assured as mentioned this will be used for piracy and that WILL impact sales. If you say you will use it solely for homebrew then great, but not everyone in the world will use this exploit for such things.

You didn't say exactly that, but yeah, the "I hope Sony loses this battle hard" indicates your support of the hackers (and eventually) pirates efforts. Have some balls and stand up for your convictions rather than making a bold statement then running like a beat dog under the car.

If you have the cash and XMCB is ported it is indeed awesome (second PS3), but if we're all going to lose access to online and gaming related updates, it's pretty sucky for the normal gamer.

GT5 without online will be tough one to sit out for fans, as will Killzone 3 and LBP 2.

Agreed. If you can "Hack" the system and are able to rent the game and rip it to your console cool. But if you lose the ability to play online for games like that or even the new CoD or MoH, there's a big issue. I wouldn't dish out $150 to lose playing online with people.

I personally don't really care about online :/

Games get updates from online as well, then there's DLC and the store...

Unless the hacks can be stealth and/or allow your firmware to stay up to date you really do castrate your system from a gaming perspective.

I agree that you are missing out on some things, but the people that do this will see it as the benefits outweigh the losses. Simple fact really.

Not so sure, as well known the 360 can connect online for multiplayer and hard drives can be swapped easily between consoles (online/offline for game saves/achievement updating) when modded.

Q&A from Mathieulh

Mathieulh, self-proclaimed hacker and member of the PSGroove team has answered a number of questions that Maxconsole members sent his way. The questions answered range from various hot topics such ashomebrew on the PS3 and whether Dark_Alex has made an attempt to get back into the 'scene'. So keep reading if you want to check out the Q&A session that you helped contribute to. If you're question didn't get though this time, don't worry there will be plenty more time to ask questions at a later date!

Can Sony block this remarkable achievement? If yes, on how much time?

Yes they can, it has probably been blocked on the 3.42 firmware already.

Will this help to install Linux on the PS3 again and use the full power (graphics chip)?

You'd still need proper drivers to use the RSX, this could still help replacing lv2 by a linux kernel though.

For my question ...What was the reason you and youre team decided to disable backups and from you re knowledge is it possible to make a homebrew that enables images to be ran from an external source ?

We decided to disable backups from our sources because we do not endorse piracy under any circumstances. I don't get the meaning of the second question, what do you mean by "images" ?

I have to ask though, how long before we see homebrew on the system and maybe a port of XBMC? Also, how easy is it to say restore Other OS (or similar) using this and will Sony be able to ban you online for its use even if it's not connected (assuming they don't block it in a system software update)?

I can't really answer that considering we are not handling any kind of XBMC port ourselves, XBMC is open sourced though so it's up to everyone to contribute. Restoring Other OS (as it was before 3.21) would require downgrading because we can't patch lv1 which had otheros support removed. Downgrading is however technically doable. Sony can (bot I am not sure they will) ban you online at any time they see fit, they have ways to detect what titles you run on your console upon login and playing, they might also have ways we don't know of, it is safer not using your console online with this hack.

I am also wondering about this. I also wonder if a footprint is left, will it be left on the PS3 console itself so no matter which PSN account you use, it will be detected? Also, do you think it is possible for Sony to brick a PS3 if they detect the PSJailbreak running?

I can't talk about other firmwares but on 3.41 upon logging into the playstation network, the list of the last played title ids are sent to Sony's servers.

My real question is, once you are done your top priorities, will you enable the PSGroove to work using a PSP? (Since you did mention that it is possible).

It's being worked on by someone in the group, but we can't give any guarantees.

Is there any chance the team (or someone else) could set up an online, central, trustable, self-updater? Like the wii equivalents.

For now, not a chance.

Have you been in contact with DaX, and if so, what are his thoughts on the latest exploit? Has he expressed any interest in tackling the ps3?

I rather not speak on his behalf, if he wants to speak up, I am quite sure he will.

Will it be possible to convert a retail PS3 into a fully functional Devkit/Tool capable of running the official SDK utilities (ProDG Debugger, Target Manager, Gpad, etc).? Without such tools it will be difficult to quickly develop homebrew applications for people who don't have access to debug kits.

I rather not discuss the future additions to the ps3groove for now, the less said, the less people will bug us about such features, and the less pressure it'll get on us.

I've had a PSP since launch and never ever took it online... I used to get my firmware updates from the games I bought (until I installed a CFW for homebrew)

i think u are not updated... It only require $24 to hack PS3 now....

people will buy a used ps3 for $150 and hack it to play games that dont have online gameplay like Heavy Rain,Uncharted,DarkSector,GOW1,2,3 etc...

I can save some money on those games and use that to buy used ps3.

Some pretty crappy bugs in those games in v1.0.

Some pretty crappy bugs in those games in v1.0.

Unfortunately that's the problem with today's console games... back then I'd say there was a lot more QA done before releasing a game and the was some bugs but nothing major...but now they ship "buggy" games knowing they'll patch it later

Never said I supported pirates efforts. Wanna throw more false words into the argument?

There's a simple App with a GUI for the N900. It's crazy how simplified this has become.

It will be interesting to see how they deal with the new firmware update. cool.gif

It certainly is simple, was a case of just flashing a 150kb file on my Desire, have since updated firmware as I was just doing it more for experiment than to pirate. Wanted to see how it worked. :)

Did you install the backup launcher? It leaves traces on the PS3. Would be pretty ****ty if you got banned now :(

    • If they ever come out and say the AI is no longer accessible to the gen pop people aren't going to know how to tie their own shoelaces.
    • It's hard not to when they are shoehorning Ai into EVERYTHING. Some are active users by choice, I bet a lot of them are because it's shoved in their face the entire time.

    • Nearly half of American adults now use AI, but concerns are also growing by Hamid Ganji Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, the way people research, get their news, and perform routine tasks has changed dramatically. Now, almost everything around us has a touch of AI, and companies are trying to embed it into nearly every product and service they offer. With that in mind, new research shows how Americans are actually adopting this change and using AI in their everyday lives. According to new research conducted by the Pew Research Center, 49% of American adults now use AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini. This marks a significant increase over last year, when only 33% of American adults reported using AI. Additionally, four in ten U.S. adults (42%) said they use AI tools to research information, while 38% said they use these tools to handle tasks at work. Entertainment, image and video editing, and getting medical advice are among the other ways Americans are using AI. Moreover, ChatGPT dominates the U.S. AI market, with 44% of respondents saying they use OpenAI's chatbot. Gemini follows at 24%, while Copilot and Meta AI account for 17% and 14%, respectively. Respondents also said that AI chatbots generally have a positive impact on their productivity and how informed they are. But when it comes to AI’s impact on society, Americans remain largely skeptical. About 40% of American adults believe AI will be more harmful than beneficial to society over the next 20 years. Additionally, 31% expect AI to have a negative effect on them personally. Another 31% of respondents say AI could be equally positive and negative. As for data security, pessimism remains high: 71% of respondents say AI will make their personal information less secure, while only 3% believe it will make their data more secure. American adults also largely lack confidence in both the government and AI companies when it comes to regulating and developing AI. About 67% of Americans have little to no confidence in the U.S. government’s ability to regulate AI effectively. Six in ten adults are also not confident that U.S. companies will develop and use these tools responsibly.
