Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta!

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I've been in the closed beta so mines already up to date etc. Just a word of warning, Microsoft Security Essentials breaks the Square Updater app thingy. Kill it before running the updater.

I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials (Ongoing beta build: 2.0.375.0) and I do not have any problems. :)

I have been playing since the closed beta, and I can't stand it.. I quit playing after the first week, I went back a few weeks ago, and tried it again but hated it still.......

Yep, see my complaints on the first page.

Be warned.. it downloads SLOW after you install.

So its just the same as FFXI where a 100MB update can take an hour to download, and another hour to install.. on a 16MB connection...

I have to say one thing:

The game is nice, it just doesn't guide you to the quests your supposed to do or even give you enough quests, and the world is way, way too big.

It sure is pretty though.

God damn this patcher is garbage, downloaded the patch files seperately but its maxing out 1 core of my cpu stuck at 99.9% trying to download some last little file.

Finally got a key however now i am having issues getting to where I can download the client installer

You can open the torrent files in uTorrent or whatever client you use. It will use DHT though because SE is blocking all other clients from accessing their tracker.

this hunk of trash is no where ready for PC release.

- patcher is amazingly slow.

- can't alt-tab without crashing

- software mouse is the worst thing ever

- terrible ui

i won't even bother going into the game play / lack of content because due to the above problems it doesn't even matter.

it's like square hasn't even bothered looking at the gaming world since 1993.

Need i remind that A) it is a Beta (sadly close to release) and B) Square has NEVER made a good PC game (the games are good however, poorly coded for PC)

After putting in like 8-10 hours between a few characters, I feel this will eventually take off, but the software mouse makes me want to cry. I know most people are accustomed to keyboard shortcuts, but I've only come across 3(map, emotions and toggle battle stance), the others are a bunch of camera changers(using mouse is more effective)

I'm hoping quests later in the retail version will be less redundant. I don't mind running back and forth at the beginning to gain some insight on mechanics, but some of them you are running for 5+ minutes.

Having to click a little button at the bottom of the screen to bring up the menu, to access anything is a pain. Pretty sure they could have gotten away with making quests and other options into keyboard shortcuts.

Other than those details, I'm having a fun time running around, testing out different classes. I could see myself picking it up sometime around the New Year. It has potential for newcomers, but if one can't get passed the UI, it'll be a long journey. Hardcore FFXI players probably will ease right into the layout, but I doubt I'll see any of my WoW friends convert.

Best experience so far has been attempting to get to another starting area with a level 5 and getting hit for 4500 by some giant mudkip with my 300 health mage, didn't even see it coming until it was too late.

I just discovered this game has almost 140,000 files in almost 20,000 folders.

That breaks my WTF meter.

I went: ... and didn't believe you.

I went to it's directory.

136,595 files and it's spread across 19,234 folders.

1) There are really easy ways around the "amazingly slow" patcher, if you would put forth the slight amount of effort required to get around it. http://www.ffxivcore.com/

2) The alt-tab thing was originally put there to deter people from breaking the NDA, and will be removed before retail. (Hopefully, if they don't and force people to use third party applications like we had to with FFXI just to alt-tab, i'll scream irl)

3) I agree completely with the software mouse.

4) My only gripe with the UI is the cluttered side menu, I don't know what they are thinking with that.

Although from what i've experienced from the beta, I still hope they are working hard to polish and hammer things out. If not, I may cancel my CE just to be on the safe side before release.

1) true, but you shouldn't have to find ways around it just because square can't be bothered to make a half decent patching system. it's the first impression you get of the game and it downloads slow and uses way to many resources for a simple little patching program.

2) really it doesn't matter why, still crashes the program. if they added windowed mode they should of fixed this.

the game has potential, I really like the whole switching weapons changes your class idea (even if for some odd reason they decided to to have a set of action bars for each profession. sigh) but square is going to just ignore the problems and release it anyways in it's buggy state ala vanguard (hey at least it had a hardware mouse)

Yeah between the horrid patcher, that, and that the first impression is "Hey look, more FF11!" I said screw that and uninstalled immediately

Leave it to the Japanese to make a new game seven years later feel like an expansion pack.

I was in the closed beta for a very small amount of time. I downloaded the client, installed the game, started playing and 5 minutes later the game was removed from my hard drive. And mind you this is not 6 months ago or anything, but just last month. I was hoping to try a few things, and hopefully provide little feedback, but there were just too many things wrong. I couldn't even get into the real game system because of the problems with the engine and general slowness of things (and yeah I got a quite powerful gaming pc).

I was thinking of preordering the CE but now sadly I won't even buy the game.

Yeah.. I dunno, SE has never been good with patching or patching systems.. Since the start of FFXI, it was ALWAYS a hassle to install and update the game.

I'd sometimes leave it going for an entire work week, and still... Friday night, downloading. Whenever they would update the game, I would always rent or make sure I had other games to play >_>

And I honestly wouldn't doubt them not releasing it with plenty of bugs and work to do. Because they know the dire hard FFXI fans, will flock to it.

Sadly, even with all the bugs i'll still probably play, because in FFXIs hayday, the game actually was pretty fun even while grinding-Meeting interesting and unique people and working out skillchains and getting massive expchains, was pretty fun.

...Unless you were healing. OH GOD. Healing was BORING as HELL in FFXI, while trying to level WHM beyond level 40 i'd fall alseep constantly...

I thought it was pretty hilarious when while waiting for his resurrect to recharge our healer decided to go into a speech about how much I liked sand.

I wish I remembered it, that was pretty classic.
