NYC Pension Checks Sent to Dead People

Recommended Posts

The New York Comptroller's Office has uncovered half a million dollars in suspected pension fraud, city officials said Monday. In dozens of cases, pension checks were sent to dead people and were cashed by someone else.

"Fraud and waste anywhere in city government cannot and should not be tolerated," Comptroller John Liu said in a statement. "This suspected pension fraud wastes the public's money and undermines security for the city's workers and retirees. Moreover, it fuels cynicism and distrust about public pensions, unfairly stigmatizing hardworking employees and retirees who have dedicated years of service doing the right thing for the city."

The city's Department of Investigation, which roots out fraud connected to city agencies, is also investigating.

The Comptroller's Office found 14 cases where people continued to cash the dead pensioner's checks or pension checks continued to be deposited into the dead pensioners' bank accounts.

Liu's office also found 171 cases totaling nearly $2 million where pension payments were issued to deceased pensioners from 2007 to 2009.

If there was ever was a taboo, it'd be it messing with deceased people's stuff.

Seriously, is there anything, short of war criminality, that could top these heinous type of acts?!:argh:
