They've also integrated the same feature you find on iOS devices, when holding a key down you get the option below.

By holding what key down? The character key? How would repeating characters work then (like eeeeeeeeee)? Or is it a modifier key?

I didn't see anyone here make a big deal out of it really. Beyond that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

By pressing and holding any key, just like in iOS. Fast repeating of keys (eeeeeeeeee) has become impossible in Mac OS X Lion because of it.

After playing with it a little bit, I found something new in Mail, although Windows-Live-Mail-ish :

We can also download a bunch of speech voices in different languages on demand. This is great :)

Couple of rants :

- They need to rework the overall GUI/UI of Chess, Text Edit, Font Book and Disk Utility. Oh, and the new iCal.

- The transition to fullscreen is strange. I've never liked it.

- They need to add a previous page and next page button in LaunchPad, because the little dots at the bottom are really small to click on (luckily we can use keyboard arrows). And a proper and easy way to remove applications from it.

- Still a few bugs here and there, like default OS apps crashing around and graphics corruption. On first view, it's either worse or as stable as Developer Preview 1.

Mail Activity pop-up thing? That has been there since Mac OS X Tiger as far as I can recall, if not since Mac OS X Leopard.

I think it was in Tiger's mail, although in all iterations it's hidden by default, at least it was on my system.

Ok, so DP2 is definitely less stable than DP1.

Also new in Mail, I don't know if it's new or not, but there's a checkbox to display (in the summary of the email) the picture in Address Book associated with the contact that sent you the email. Very nice.

I really don't find DP2 any less stable in DP1. In fact, it fixed some of the most buggiest features from DP1, such as making Mission Control actually usable and several minor issues relating to Safari 5.1.

As for Mail, yes, it's clearly drawn some inspiration from Windows Live Mail. But then Windows Live services in general has been inspired by some Mac and Linux projects. Everyone copies from one another, and in the end, it's going to lead to better products for all.

I had severe graphics corruptions on the "Upload picture" button in Safari 5.1, and Safari crashed a few times and told me Neowin?s forum page wasn?t responding.

It was impossible for me to select any text at all once, it would only change the place of my cursor.

I had a crash during the installation, needed to reboot.

I never got any of that in DP1. I was extremely confident for the stablest major point release in OS X history, but now I?m not so convinced anymore. I doubt this can be released at WWDC, especially because if they present it at WWDC, it?s because they haven?t shown us a couple of new features yet to come.

Well for every new bug in DP2, I've found two more fixed that existed in DP1. Like the first build, DP2 is likely a much older build than the very latest one Apple is working on. I see no real major issues that would prevent this from being released this summer, as Apple said it will be.

Well, Apple said "early summer," which would imply a late June release or some time in July, as summer begins June 21. I'm not sure where people got the notion this is being released early June or before WWDC, because Apple never said anything like that.

iWork '09 doesn't work on DP2 at all, it won't even open, all you get is an error message. I think I remember Pages working on DP1.

I don't use repeating keys much at all, and if I do I guess I can just hit the button over and over again in rapid succession... but I guess it's a weird thought to lose such a basic functionality that systems have had for as long as I can remember.

I installed DP2 on my MacBook and I can't find the "Battery" tab that was in DP1's System Profiler:

With DP1, there was a "Battery" tab to the right of "Memory" on my MacBook. Now it's either been moved or removed.

Okay that's odd, because the rest of us did have the feature on Mac OS X Leopard. ;)

I downloaded it last night but didn't have time to install it yet. Can this release be installed from scratch?

You have to extract the DMG from the Installer package contents and restore it a USB-stick, SDHC card, DVD or whatever. I'm trying it as we speak.

Last time around I really did get a good look at Mac OS X Lion performance-wise because I did an upgrade from Mac OS X Snow Leopard. :/

Edit: Yup, the DMG is bootable once you restore it to another drive.
