Hey Everyone,

Its been a little while since I posted an update, mainly because we have been really hard at work on our website, and Fusion OS. So I am going to start out by saying that it does not look like Fusion OS Beta 3 will be ready for a Wednesday release. Now, it is still possible that we will be able to release it on Wednesday, but basically it all depends on how productive of a day tomorrow is, and if we can iron out the bugs. We want to have this be a very stable release and almost feature complete. But on a better note, tomorrow we will be launching our new Support Website which is beefed up and ready for Beta 3, and ultimately 1.0! And another thing that I was thinking was what if on the Fusion OS website we sold custom flash drives with the Fusion OS logo, and have Fusion pre-installed on them. What do you guys think? Would anyone be interested in purchasing such a thing? The price would be between $10-$15 because of the cost of getting the flash drives made, unless we get a better deal on them since this project makes no revenue, we are talking with USB Memory Direct and the person we are in contact with is trying to get us a discount, which then would let the selling price go down more to around $9.99. I will post here tomorrow regarding the release of Fusion OS Beta 3, and information about the USB drives, and support website. So, would anyone be interested in the flash drive idea, or is it not a good idea?

- Keith.

Hmm FusionOS site seems down for me currently. But I hope the beta is out today or at least this week, I'm looking forward to it!

Also yes, the USB drive seems like a great idea. It'd be ideal for people with slow connections to get it and then share it with their friends. Have you thought about CD/DVDs first though as a start-up as it'd be cheaper until you get more interest if you know what I mean.

Also a question I asked a while back, will 1.0 contain a Wubi style release of FusionOS so I can install it alongside by Windows installation without having to configure bootloaders and all that. I want to install it as my main OS but will not be able to until I get a new laptop as I need Windows for various reasons. I'd love for a Wubi style release as then it'd be easier to let friends try it out for a few days without having to configure their system and all and they can easily uninstall it.

Yes I have been having quite a few intermittent issues with the site, now it seems to be working again but I will be sure to find the cause and patch this up. CD/DVDs are a great idea also I will look into those aswell as you said it would be a cheaper option. And to answer your question about a Wubi-type installer, we are working on something along those lines, and testing it out, if all goes well it should be included in fOS 1.0.

Also Fusion OS Beta 3 has not been released today, Wednesday, July 27, 2011. We feel that it doesn't have enough work done to it yet, and still has some prominent bugs, I know it is disappointing for us to delay it more but in the end hopefully it will be well worth the delay. The new release date will be Friday, August 12, 2011. Mainly the reason that the release date is so far away is because I will be out of town for the next week and will not be able to help with the development of Fusion, so to give enough time I put in another week to get everything ready. I really hope you all understand but, I PROMISE, Beta 3 will not disappoint. :)

- Keith.

Are there any links to try beta 3?

I think this quote from the post above yours answers this question.

Also, I'm looking forward to seeing what's new in Beta 3.

I'm loving the GUI, but the squared windows borders and the caption buttons needs a lot of work. Might I suggest looking at this theme for some inspiration? http://solmiler.deviantart.com/art/Glass-Onion-for-W7-202355689

Not wanting to **** on anyone's bonfire here, but shouldn't this sentence be more like this

" mainly because we have been really hard at work on Fusion OS and our website."

Anyway, i'm willing to give it a go when it's in a useable state, because i'm not that much up on Linux

Tonight, I have tried to install Ubuntu and Mint Linux, and both have failed. Not sure why, cos i've had Mint running for qute a few months now, but had to re-install when I broke a connector on my motherboard

I agree with you completely on this, that is something that is changing in Beta 3. The windows are revamped, and we are going for a more softer "frosted" glass look. It looks very nice I will put up a preview of it sometime soon.

Thats what I mean lol, I wrote this very late at night (or early in the morning).

Hey Everybody,

Well as you may or may not know I have been out of town for the past few days, and haven?t been able to actively work on Fusion OS. However, I had some spare time so I decided to finish up the design concepts for Beta 3. You will notice that there is a new window theme, and the panel graphics have changed as well. This is all part of the ?smooth?, ?frosted? glass User Interface that I talked about before. This UI has now been dubbed ?Vision? which is also the codename for Beta 3 itself. We chose the name Vision for both the Beta release, and the desktop theme because we feel that Beta 3 will be the best release yet at portraying our vision for Fusion OS. Now remember this is not the actual desktop, although, the actual desktop will look 99.9% like this with very few and far between changes. Also I am going to confirm what I said before that Fusion OS ? Beta 3 ?Vision? will be a feature freeze. Meaning that we will try to implement all the features we want in the final version, and then we will just develop and evolve those, but not add any new features in any new release preceding version 1.0. I will post below a picture of the desktop, and then a close up of the window theme. Please if anyone has any suggestions PLEASE leave a comment, we really use your feedback in Fusion. I will write again soon about more details of Fusion OS ?Vision?, but until then thanks for reading and hope you enjoy the screen shots below.

- Keith.

PS: I took the feedback you all provided on the previous window theme and tried to implement it I change the button completely, and made everything rounder so it isn?t so sharp.

^ Love it. Interested to see what it looks like in a application like Chrome open. Will you also be making custom back/forward buttons and show them off soon. As the default ones look horrible, and I can't remember from Beta 2 but I think they were plain. Same in the Explorer/File Manager app.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate comments like this! :) I will be sure to put up a screenshot of chrome open with the theme in the future. I didn't think about the buttons but I suppose we could make custom ones, thanks for mentioning it.

SPOILER ALERT!

Anyone want a sneek peak of the new website that will be launching with Fusion OS "Vision"? I know we just launched a new one not long ago but I was not satidified with it and have been working on a new one. If you want to see it in its current (very uncomplete) state, go here: http://www.simplyinnovation.net/fusionos

Hello Neowinians!

So glad the site is back! I really missed it while it was down :( But anyways it has been a couple days since I posted any updates and as you may or may not know we have been feverishly searching for a good Help Desk or Support site solution for Fusion. We tried out Trellis Desk, OS Ticket, Hesk and a few other "free" ones but none were up to par to provide the support we need to give for Fusion OS. I looked into a company called Kayako which provides support for Sony, Envato, ICANN, Oracle, Avast, SEGA, and many universities and others, it was really a great solution but as you can probably figure all these "premium" options cost a pretty penny in this case it was $999. I contacted them and found out they give licences away to some open source projects and they donated one to us! I want to give a HUGE thanks to Kayako for donating it, because we would not be able to afford to purchase a licence but they were so generous as to give us one. So now if you want a preview of what the Fusion OS Support Center will look like go ahead and have a look at http://www.support.fusionos.net/ and see our Kayako Setup in action! We now have a Knowledge Base, Live Support, a Troubleshooter, Tickets and more! The support website will be launching most likely late tonight or tomorrow along with the new Fusion OS website, which can be previewed at http://www.simplyinnovation.net/fusionos (in cased you missed it) Also we have put a big link back to Neowin on our new website because Neowin is an amazing and supportive community and we would not have accomplished ANYTHING without all of you! There is also a link to this topic on the support website. Thanks for reading and gear up for Beta 3!

- Keith.

So, as is this distro is designed to be 100% user friendly, have you made sure that all defaults are set to minimize hindering to the end user?

Things like installing a graphics driver so that you DONT have to go through the settings menu to allow your computer to install closed source drivers, every reasonably common thing that people go through the terminal for (like installing apps) has been taken care of?

I have a problem with your website http://simplyinnovation.net/fusionos/ . The pages Home and About are fine. But the Screenshots, Downloads, and Support pages are blank. I checked them out in every browser(IE9,Chrome,FF).

Yes I know, thats why its a preview :p I haven't added it yet although it is all finished. That site will be live later tonight or tomorrow WITH content :)

Oops :p ! Really interesting project. Would love to have it. The interface is absolutely gorgeous! So when is it scheduled to go RTM?

And I have never installed an OS before, so I was wondering if you could answer some basic questions about this.

I have Windows 7 installed on my two PCs, can I dual-boot this( . . .and is it difficult to do so :) )?

Would dual-booting slow down my PC?

How much would Fusion OS cost to download?

Thanks FMH

Thanks, I really appreciate your comments, Fusion OS 1.0 will RTM before years end. Beta 3 is the last release in the Beta string and then we will have one or to Release Candidates before RTM (most likely one RC), also Fusion OS is and always will be free. Yes You could dual-boot this and no it is not difficult, there will be an article on how to do this on the new support website soon! Would dual-booting slow down your pc? well, you need to look at first how much hard drive space you have, and if you have enough to run two operating systems, but really with any modern computer you should be fine, and it should not affect your computers performance. Also we are working on a WUBI-type solution that lets you install Fusion from Windows itself and it sets everything up for you (minimal work) but that is not yet released. ope I answered your questions. Hope I answered your questions.

Thank Keith! :)

I would surely install it on my computer. I'm a big fan of simplicity and minimalism. But one more question though. Where would I have to choose to shift between two OS? When I turn-on my computer, or when I'm am logged in my Windows.

And in between, I think this OS could turn things around for Linux as a whole. The market share, and the the notion held about Linux by consumers.

Question has already been answered, but just a note...Back up your computer! Before you install another OS (Doesn't matter which one), always back up your information just to be on the safe side.

One small mistake, one missed step, and suddenly you have deleted your partition, or installed over top of it, and lost everything.

But, the great thing is, you can try it without installing :) Just loads off the CD/USB and doesn't touch your hard drive :) Safe way to find out if Linux is right for you

Thank Keith! :)

Yes, you switch at boot up. It will prompt you to select between the two. And thanks so much, we are doing our best!

    • Lexar PLAY X 1TB 2230 review: blazing fast PCIe Gen4x4 gaming SSD for PC and consoles by Steven Parker Lexar reached out to us asking if we were interested in taking a look at the Lexar PLAY X SSD. This drive is mostly (but not strictly) intended for handhelds and consoles as a means to expand storage for gaming, but you can use it however you like. In our case we were sent the 2230 1TB variant, so we plopped it into the bracket that's included in the box and installed it in our test PC. Before we get underway, Lexar provided a free sample without any editorial input or review pre-approval. Below are its specifications: Lexar PLAY X Interface PCIe Gen4x4 with NVMe Form Factor M.2 2030, M.2 2230, M.2 2280 Capacity 512GB, 1TB, 2TB Speed 512GB: Sequential read speed up to 7200MB/s, sequential write speed up to 4500MB/s, random read up to 900K IOPs, random write up to 900K IOPs 1TB: Sequential read speed up to 7400MB/s, sequential write speed up to 6400MB/s, random read up to 1000K IOPs, random write up to 1000K IOPs 2TB: Sequential read speed up to 7400MB/s, sequential write speed up to 6500MB/s, random read up to 1000K IOPs, random write up to 1000K IOPs DRAM Cache No TB written 512GB: 300TBW, 1TB: 600TBW, 2TB: 1200TBW Operation temp 0° to 70°C (32°F to 158°F) Storage temp - 40° to 85°C (- 40°F to 185°F) Durability Shock Resistance: 1500G, duration 0.5ms, Half Sine Wave Vibration resistenence: 10~2000Hz, 1.5mm, 20G, 1Oct/min, 30min/axis (X, Y, Z) MTBF 1,500,000 Hours Dimensions 80 x 22 x 2.45 mm / 3.15”x0.87”x0.10” Weight 9.5g / 0.02lbs Part nr LNMPLYX001T-RNNNG Warranty 5 years Price £119.99, €119.99, / £218.99, €249.99 First a few notes about the specs. The Lexar PLAY X SSD does not come with a (graphene) heatsink so you will have to ensure you have a thermal pad or something that can be used with this drive, and secondly it says in the specs that it does not have a DRAM Cache, as it makes use of: Basically what this means is that HMB handles finding files, while the Dynamic pseudo-SLC cache handles writing them. The Lexar PLAY X uses TLC NAND flash memory, which stores three bits of data per cell. Writing three bits requires checking multiple voltage levels, which takes time. It's a trade off for the drive size too, as it would be difficult to place DRAM cache onto the 2230 format. What's in the box Lexar PLAY X (1TB) 2280 Bracket 2230 and 2280 Sticker Quick Installation Guide Our test system consists of the following: Lian Li O11 Dynamic Mini V2 Flow (Amazon|Newegg) ASUS ProArt Z890-CREATOR WiFi (Amazon|Newegg) Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus (Amazon|Newegg) Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet - 44x37 (Amazon|Newegg) 2x 16GB G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB (7200 MT/s in XMP) (Amazon|Newegg) Sabrent Rocket4 Plus 2TB SSD (Amazon) Windows 11 Pro 25H2 (Build 26100.8655) Benchmarks With that out of the way, we ran some benchmarks comparing (historic) data with a couple of other drives on a system that is up to date with the latest June Patch Tuesday updates. Aside from the clear difference between the PCIe 4x4 and PCIe 5x4 results, it is also clear that applying correct thermal conditions, in this case the DARK AirFlow I, makes a difference with the outcome of the score as can be seen on the TeamGroup Z540. (hsf = heatsink & fan, hs = heatsink) WD SN850X Lexar PLAY X Z540 with DARK AirFlow I In our 3DMark Storage benchmark test (images above), which measures access times and bandwidth for gaming scenarios, the Lexar PLAY X was the fastest. Even compared to the actively cooled TeamGroup Z540, this one was 23% faster, despite being on PCIe Gen4; and it was doing so while running cool too, as you will see later in our temperature stress test. The Lexar PLAY X supports DirectStorage like other NVMe drives, and here, the SSD was a lot better with DirectStorage enabled on our 3DMark DirectStorage feature test. With GDeflate especially, the improvement is tremendous. Overall, the test result says that the Lexar PLAY X was nearly three times faster while running with DirectStorage. (hsf = heatsink & fan, hs = heatsink) Z540 with DARK AirFlow I Lexar PLAY X WD SN850X Next we ran the default CrystalDiskMark test (images above) and measured the disk temperature. Even with the motherboard M.2 heatsink applied to the top of it, the drive managed to reach a peak of 70C, which is well within specification. Also, another positive is that it exceeded its advertised sequential write speed of 6,400 MB/s in our testing, which is rare and deserves praise. Z540 with DARK AirFlow I Lexar PLAY X WD SN850X The second test is of six passes at 16GB (images above), meant to stimulate a heavier, longer transfer session, and it reached the same max temp of 70~71C. This indicates that the PLAY X is performing exceptionally well even under heavy loads. It is not as chill as the WD_BLACK SN850X, but 70-71 C is completely safe. Usage Although Lexar generally markets anything stamped with "Play" for handhelds and consoles, on the official product page and Amazon listing, the PLAY X is definitely marketed as an all-rounder with the company claiming that it is: This is exactly what we did, as our sample was placed into the 2280 bracket and installed in the M.2_1 slot on our ASUS ProArt Z890-CREATOR WiFi. CrystalDiskInfo Idle temp as shown above is also pretty decent at 28C. Lexar DiskMaster Lexar also provides a disk utility that can read the disk information and benchmark it. S.M.A.R.T info can be viewed above and it loads automatically in the program, I also ran the "Performance testing" which gave a better result than we saw in CrystalDiskMark v9.0.2. Conclusion I have to say I came out very impressed with the PLAY X, especially seeing how well it did in the 3DMark gaming test. That was surprising for sure, in a good way of course. Hence, as the name suggests, the PLAY X can be a great drive for gaming rigs. The drive ran fairly cool as well, although you will want to make sure it's properly cooled, seeing how it was reaching its maximum recommended operating temperature; but there was no noticeable throttling. The 600 TBW rating of the 1TB variant seems pretty good as well for this gaming-orientated storage where writes will be happening more frequently for game saves and what-not, but even so, you should see years of use without any problems and even if you do run into problems, the five year warranty should have you covered. A bit of a downer for our U.S. readers though, Lexar told me that the PLAY X is not yet available to purchase in the United States, but it can be ordered if you're in the UK. I asked when they plan to release it there and was told: In addition, although the initial review documentation and official website suggests there is also a 2 TB variant, Lexar have stated that "The 2TB version has not been launched yet." As you can see from the links below, the 1 TB variant is also selling a bit above the RRP in the UK, and the 512 GB version aligns with Lexar's RRP. Lexar PLAY X 1 TB for £241.99 on Amazon UK Lexar PLAY X 512 GB for £119.99 on Amazon UK We hope the 2TB variant becomes available soon, considering how well the drive did in our game data tests. We feel the higher capacity will be popular for sure, though at this time, the lack of it is not hard to understand why, given the shortage and the shift in focus for a lot of companies.
