Rift MMO

I'd like to think so too, but it won't work that way. There will be the best DPS/tanking/healing builds, and that's what people will choose or be forced to use to get groups. It's how all MMOs turn out. The only difference here is you may be able to choose which buffs you want to bring to the group. Otherwise, everybody will be using cookie-cutter builds.

With all the combinations i don't think you will get many cookie-cutter builds. There many be "preferred builds" like in Guild Wars, but unlike the WoW talent trees it seems like very few things are "get this, or gtfo". It will be up to the guild/raid to decide if your playstyle/build will work well with the group, but i don't think it will devolve into a tank/healer/dps ordeal. In Guild Wars i ran a PvP melee R/W build that was totally custom, and it kicked butt! It also worked very well in PvE, and did what it needed to do. As long as you can succeed in your required job (buffs, helping with heals/off heals, etc) i don't see any reason you will be forced into an archetype.

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but I'm pretty sure it's what's going to happen.

Rift is very cool though. I'm still deciding whether I want to buy it or not, but I'm leaning toward it.

I agree, there will no doubt be some cookie cutter builds, but it's up to the individual to decide if they want to have fun and play with their own build, and a guild that will allow it; or play with a group of people who will require you to min/max and conform exactly to the roll.

For example I'm specing my Bladedancer for high attack rate, damage, stealth and crit. The only reason I even grabbed a class was to max out crit rates/stealth (assassin). The other class (rift stalker) was for defense and damage while the class of Bladedancer itself buffs my dodge percentage and attack speed/combos. You can see already that if instead of choosing, say Assassin I could have chose something like Nightblade which mixes in magic for improved DPS.

I got a Beta which turned me off when I found out it was nearly a 2Gig download with only 2 days to go in my 3 day trial.

I used to play Aion, which even though the curve was fixed on grinding, it was still bad. Aion was a very pretty game though.

I wish an MMO can come out that eliminates the grind.. may peak my interest again.

Found a good guild to join for the game, seems right down my alley. If any Neowinians are picking up this game, and interesting in joining a guild, here's the description.

Havn't seen many guilds that catch my fancy so I started one up myself. Technically UC has been around for some years, but it was a name I used for an xbox live based clan/club. So pretty much just think of this as a brand new guild, formed just for Rift.

Guild Focus:

UC will primarily be a PvE raiding guild focusing on progression, but there will likely be a few PvP folks for the Warfronts. I know I plan doing some, but it won't be forced and we'll be on a PvE server. Raiding also will not be a requirement. I'd say I run a casual guild for the most part, but I have no problem laying down the law if I have to. I'm a big meanie sometimes, ask around. Most likely will stick with smaller numbers. Shooting for around 40-50 members and then recruitment will slow down so we all get to know each other a little better.

Requirements:

Age 18+

Willing to learn and play well with others

Able to take, as well as give constructive criticism. Don't be rude to your fellow guildies (nor other gamers for that matter).

We will be using Ventrilo

Raiding Info:

This is where most current guilds don't do what I'm looking for. A lot are doing a 3 or 4 (or more) nights a week kinda thing, but I'd rather do a 2 night and 1 Saturday afternoon type schedule. I'm hoping this will resolve some issues I've seen in the past.

Wednesday & Thursday will be evening raids, and run from 8:00pm EST to 10:00pm EST

Saturday will be an afternoon raid, run from 2pm EST to 5pm EST

Loot will be handle with a DKP system but I won't go into the full details here. Feel free to check the forums for the current writeup which was originally done for EQ2. Imagine it'll be roughly the same, cept for the money.

That about wraps it up I guess. I'm pretty terrible at making these recruiting threads, but I have the United Chaos forums up & running. Feel free to PM or post here for questions about me or the guild. Thanks.

Here's the sign up forums

The guild I run with has been around since 1999. I'm not sure how many of us will be in

Rift (I've already pre-ordered), but I know quite a few will at least try it. SW-TOR will have

a HUGE following within the Guild:

Just a quick note: We JUST changed our entire website to a whole new design.

Thus, you won't see most of the old content in the forums and so forth.

so ayase from ncsoft(aion) is the new EU CM for rift.

he's generally regarded as the better CM in aion, although when youre competition is a guy who uses his CM twitter to post about last night's dinner and foursquare, and using your in game admin powers to interfere with pvp on regular servers, it's not hard to be liked by the playerbase.

one of the last things he did in aion was claim that hte so called major content patch could've been charged for along the lines of the average wow expansion. this is a content patch that added 2.5 small zones and 5 levels to the game.

now i can't judge him too harshly, as he did read and post on fansites for the game and occasionally used his pull to take a second look at people's bans. but realistiically one or two fo the other CMs including jr CMs were more upfront about actually useful information and had actual legit toons on some servers, even if one of the CMs was known for abusing her power to ban people on her server she didn't like.

what does this mean for rift? they've got a new PR guy who's last job was eating **** for one of the ********* most lied about games in recent years, and being known in that game for actually doing his job compared to some other PR guys working on that game. so basically he's just going to say whatever his bosses at trion tell him to say.

ZAM was giving out free Rift VIP keys. They're all gone now. Free key to the first person who adds it to their account:

N776-YN6L-TKKD-QT7K-JCYN

Grr, already taken. Would be nice if the one who took it posted so. Ah well...

So after much debating with myself whether i wanted to spend the $10 extra, i took a leap of faith and pre-ordered the Digital Collector's Edition off Steam. Now on the Rift site it says to apply my pre-order code, is this just the CD key on steam? I activated that through the site, but I'm not sure if steam is supposed to send me some separate code to get VIP access or not.

yeah the cd key on steam should do it.

i'm downloading the client right now. kinda slow and weird in a way i guess. not overly impressed it's another one of those mmo's you have to log in to patch,as i like to patch up then pay for game time.

Yup, Steam CD key did the trick. The launcher may very well change in the future, it's only closed beta after all. Also, are you meaning slow as in download speeds? I was hitting great DL speeds. I have always wished that Steam could automatically update MMOs, though. It would be great to not have to patch manually, but i imagine it would create a bunch of problems for the companies.

I'm thinking of going Cleric for beta 5, and then giving Mage an attempt in beta 6. Shaman seems like a blast to play, but I'm trying to decide if i want to go a 2 soul route, or 3. Too many options!

i'm gonna try a mage type toon. i hear they have really slow casting speed though. there some kind of warrior caster hybrid soul but i tend to regret rolling mdps in mmo's and it's one intersting soul in an archetype filled with stuff i don't want to do.

but yeah i was getting 471kbps from teh launcher yesterday. and the whole logging in to patch thing is always annoying imho, just because i like to patch up the game and then pay for game time. it's actually one of the factors holding me back from resubbing to STO right now.

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
