...but you haven't seen actual 360 footage. What makes you think it will look worse? Didn't BC2 look pretty much identical for both 360 and PS3?

I haven't played BC 2. I just think it's odd that no one shows game play for the 360. It's like they are hiding stuff. It's my opinion though. Eveything so far has been PC, and PS thats it. I just think its odd.

I think you're overreacting, for all you know they have some financial reason to debut some video on the PS3; no clue though. Regardless you will still buy it - you know it, and the PC version will trump both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Just enjoy the game.

By the way I am getting it for Xbox 360 as I am on a MacBook Pro.

Everyone knows the 360 is CoD land.

I'm sure M$ is 2secs from dumping their MW3 Ad Campaign bombardment on us.

There won't be any noticeable difference between the consoles, really.

So I wouldn't make a big deal out of not seeing anything.

This.

MW is generally affiliated with the 360, they get the map packs first, etc., so this is nothing more than that.

Just gaming politics.

Originally, I planned only buying the PC version of BF3. Now, I might also get the X360 version. I'll mostly be busy with MW3 but my best friend plans on getting it because he doesn't have a gaming PC. It'd be nice to play the co-op campaign as well as MP whenever we get tired of MW3. Of course, I'll enjoy BF3 the most on PC just as I enjoyed BF2.

Battlefield 3: Commander mode to reprise in PC version

Oh Snap! The lucky players of the PC version of Battlefield 3 might get the supreme pleasure of playing the game in Commander mode. Okay, we?ll give you a few seconds to pick your jaw up from the floor. Hot out of Gamescom 2011, the news is that the alpha testing phase of Battlefield 3 is yielding some important player features feedback for the DICE development team.

According to DICE designer Karl Magnus Troedsson, the alpha testing is producing some key feature nuggets for the development team to pursue. Just so we don?t get accused of putting words in his mouth or twisting the meaning of the statement he actually said, here is his statement: ?It?s been quite interesting actually, because we needed to load-test the backend. But we also got some really good feedback when it comes to actual features, and so on. The map that people got to play was the Rush map on Metro that we had showing [at E3]. Some of it we actually already reacted to. One of the key feedback we got, for instance, was that people wanted the comm roles back on PC. So that?s one thing that we actually have added. It?s a PC specific feature, but it?s the PC community that has asked for it.? Comm roles back on PC! Wow! I am already seeing images of cheering Battlefield 3 fans as I type this. Cyber high fives all around.

Why all the jubiliation? Just in case you didn?t play Battlefield 2, the Commander was one of the most engaging roles in that installment. It allows a player to direct his units from a location off the battlefield. You got to deploy UAV sweeps, artillery strikes, support units, and others. This role packs a lot of high level strategy into an otherwise tactical level game.

Curious since I did not play BF2 and will be playing BF3 on the Xbox 360 but how is the "Commander" chosen?

In BF2 before the match started, people could "apply" for Commander. I believe it would go to the person with the highest ranking. Either that or the person with the most commander experience. It was one or the other. BUT, other players could vote that person down right when they applied. It sounds like it could potentially be disastrous giving people that level of control, but it really somehow always worked. The commander also could at any time get nominated to get kicked during the match. So if somehow someone was in the commander position and did not take it seriously, and / or just plain sucked, during the match they could get voted out by the majority.

Putting it in the other players hands really meant the players who were commander were doing a good job and/or took it serious. A good commander really makes a big difference. I always left being commander to people who were good at it. I did it once or twice, and was not bad by any means, but there are definitely people who just "get it" and do a really good job at being one.

That article isn't written very well. Sounds like the person is getting mixed up between Comma Rose and Commander...

This actually. I think they are just assuming because the comm rose are back, that automatically means the commander is back. I think this is some smaller gaming website trying to generate some traffic and nothing else.

I would definitely only take this with a grain of salt.

I loved being commander. I treated it like an RTS and completely engrossed myself as commander.

I ended up really enjoying the Commander role. I was hesitant at first.

A good Commander could literally single-handedly win the battle for you.

When you actually had squads that listened, that just translated into an easy win.

I found that having a competent commander drew players in even more to this core function of tactical warfare and would play their roles more.

I loved the chain of command com structure in bf2. Only squad leaders can request arty/uav/support from the commander. So no spammage over coms.

It's weird I enjoyed the role as much given the rts feel of it. (i hate rts)

I was pretty good at it though. Key for me was continuously scan the field. UAV's in areas where there would be a squad moving flanks or just heavy groups coming in for a sabotage run. I never really deployed UAV's for flags being taken (unless the board was clean after scan) I'd just zoom in and spot them manually.

Arty guns themselves were just as important for overtaken squads at flag points. Again, scanning and spotting.

I was never the type of comm that would sit out the whole fight micro-managing, most did though. I enjoyed pinpointing the opposing commander cause more times than not, he'd always be sitting along somewhere not moving. Sending in an arty on him or simply a knife in the back knocking him off his comms temporarily was really rewarding.

I played spec ops class so I'd set myself up for hindering the opposing commander by disabling his arty/uav. Then moving in on him :shiftyninja:

I reminiscence too much, lol.

So as much as I've enjoyed it, I really don't see them implementing this feature in BF3 at launch, if ever.

It would probably be patched in later on as paid DLC if there's enough fuss.

I do think the posted article simply misunderstood what was said. I thought they've pretty much stated multiple times that Commander was not going to be in game due to no one utilizing it in-game.

And thankfully there were people like you who took it seriously. (Y)

As schizo says, a good commander with good squad leaders literally makes the difference.

It is honestly why BF2 is my favorite MP FPS of all time. When you were on a good team where the entire time was all on the same page, well there literally is no gaming experience quite like it. 32 players working together as one team. Really is incredibly kick ass when it all comes together.

For anyone who is interested, this is what the commander saw in BF2.

Commandermode.png

I really do think the article is wrong though, as schizo also pointed out, I already thought it had pretty much been stated a full fledged commander role will not be happening.

For the commander to be effective, it means a decent amount of unselfish play,, so I honestly even wonder if the Commander role could even happen these days anyway. :iiam:

Hi, so I pre-ordered BF3 from origin (If it was on steam I would have done it instantly), and was just wondering if a 6850 will run it @ 1440x900 in max settings (except for resolution of course :))

The CPU is a Phenom II X6 1090T.

If anyone from neowin who wants to add me on origin (for BF3 Beta) here is my ID: Rohanrao

That's awesome news! I enjoyed playing as the commander in BF2 because I was pretty good at spotting things on the map. It's even better when you play with a commander that actually knows what he's doing.

Ow.. so no commander in BF3 then? ok..stupid..I just read the article about the Commander mode in BF3 :p

And..am I the only one who hates being able to prone? The reason I hate playing games like this are the campers... with prones, everyone would have just camped :(

What i hope is that they release more map packs not maps already present but with different game modes like they did with the "VIP Packs" in BF:BC2

While these packs were cool, there was damn all new and refreshing maps and still isn't which i felt was pretty crappy.

Yeah, that was REALLY messed up... :/

The article is wrong as DirtyLarry and others pointed out - commander is most likely not coming back.

Who wasn't good at spotting in BF2 as commander?: right-click, spot, voila

You didn't even have to be precise when spotting on the map.

Yeah they actually updated the article with this...

We here at Gamebandits would like to thank our community for pointing out that we got the wrong end of the proverbial stick here with this article. We are sorry for raising your hopes unnecessarily, but Commander mode will not be making a comeback in Battlefield 3. Troedsson was in fact referring to Commo Rose. The Commo Rose is a feature of Battlefield 2 that allows for faster communication with other players by allowing the selection of pre-set messages to be selected from a menu. It is this function that will be making a comeback in Battlefield 3.

What I meant was actually spotting things on the map like friendly troop movement, etc. It's a shame commander mode isn't coming back. I was really looking forward to it.

    • Owing to the nature of Windows feature enablement updates, it was distributed over Windows Update services as a complete system upgrade rather than as an ordinary cumulative update
    • Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2, urges IT admins to prepare for release by Usama Jawad Windows 11 typically follows an annual update cycle, but Microsoft recently broke that tradition a bit by releasing a "26H1" version in the first half of this year as a "scoped" build for select new silicon PCs only. This version was not available for customers using 24H2 and 25H2 builds, as Microsoft is busy preparing version 26H2 for them, confirmed officially for the first time. In a Windows IT Pro blog, Microsoft has urged IT admins to prepare for the upcoming release of Windows 11 version 26H2. The company has confirmed that this will be a small enablement package (eKB) that will simply light up certain disabled features that are already present in the operating system's code base. This means that the "refined" Windows update and deployment experience will be simpler and quicker, with minimal disruptions, as the feature update will simply toggle a few flags rather than performing a complete replacement. Microsoft has explained that this is all possible because the standard Windows 11 releases share the same servicing branch and hence, the same source code. However, this also means that Windows 11 26H1 users won't be able to upgrade to 26H2 as that is a different branch, but this is something we have known for a while now. Similar to previous annual feature updates, Windows 11 26H2 will offer the following support cycles: 24 months of support for Home, Pro, Pro EDU, and Pro for Workstations editions 36 months of support for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise Multi-session editions Microsoft has not confirmed a concrete release date for Windows 11 26H2, but noted that it is "coming soon". If we go by the ongoing release cadence, we can expect it to begin rolling out in early October 2026. As such, IT admins have been encouraged to begin validating Windows Insider releases in the Experimental Channel, plan rollout rings, and strategize the utilization of their existing deployment tools.
    • Windows 11 gets new audio improvements in the latest builds by Taras Buria Today's Experimental builds (26H1 and Future Platforms, formerly Canary) pack several audio-related improvements. If your device is enrolled in the Experimental Channel (26H1), you can download build 28120.2315, while those in the Future Platforms version have build 29613.1000 to try. Here is what is new in build 29613.1000: [Audio] Following up on our previous improvements, we’re making some more adjustments to Settings > System > Sounds based on your feedback. Namely, we’ve updated the “All sound devices” page so: You now have the ability to change default devices from this page. Each of the devices displayed on this page now has a little volume meter next to it to show if there is audio actively playing. We’ve adjusted the page design slightly so now you can filter whether you’re viewing input or output devices. We’ve added toggles so you can choose if you want to hide or show disabled, disconnected, and unplugged devices on this page. We’ve also updated the input and output audio properties page for devices in Settings to now include jack information for those that need it. And here is the changelog for build 28120.2315: This update includes a small number of minor bug fixes and improvements. [Accessibility] This update improves caption style responsiveness by redrawing captions immediately for caption style changes. If no current caption is visible, a sample caption string is displayed. [Audio] This update improves the reliability of the inbox HD Audio driver. You can find the official release notes for build 28120.2315 here and for build 29613.1000 here.
    • I agree with what I think you are saying, just not in the way you are saying it. Like any tool, the amount it represents your work is perorational to the effort you put into it. It is similar to why 2nd grade math students learning to add and subtract are not allowed to use calculators, but a high-school calculous student is. For the 2nd grader, that tool would completely replace the work they are doing, for the calculous student the same tool allows them to work far more effectively while in no way replacing their effort or knowable. If you spend 30 seconds writing a prompt, then the image that comes out is no more "yours" than if you found the same image with a Google Image search. However, many of these generative tools also support highly iterative processes that allow back and forth, and merging generated images with photos or human created images. I am sure you would agree that a human spending hours of time working on a project, even if AI was involved in the process, still reflects that human's work.
