Day one demand for Steam Controller brings down Steam store, and stocks are already gone

Valve's new Steam Controller went on sale today on Steam, and it faced a mad rush from fans to grab a unit.

Valve returned to the hardware space again today with the launch of its latest generation Steam Controller. Its release managed to draw so much attention that the Steam store's servers did something that only happens during its bi-yearly sale events, going down momentarily right as the Steam Controller order page went live.

It didn't take long for the Steam Controller store page to begin showing an 'Out of Stock' message for users in the US. Those who managed to nab the $100 device should have their new hardware at their doorsteps within 3-5 or 6-10 business days, depending on the release wave they landed on.

Users who weren't so lucky say that despite managing to add the controller to the cart, messages such as "There seems to have been an error initializing or updating your transactions" were popping up, blocking them from finalizing the order. The same errors were hitting the Steam store when users were attempting to purchase unrelated items like games too, showing just how much demand there was for the new hardware.

Reports say that Valve had limited the number of controllers that can be purchased in one order to be just two units. Unfortunately, searching on eBay already shows scalpers putting up the new Steam Controller for sale for at least double the original price. Depending on how fast Valve manages to restock the controller, these reselling prices may rise further going forward.

The Steam Controller is only one of the three new pieces of hardware Valve is planning to release in 2026. These are the Linux-powered Steam Machine with its AMD Zen 4 CPU, RDNA3 GPU, and 16GB of DDR5 RAM, as well as the Steam Frame VR headset with a built-in Snapdragon 8 Series CPU with 16GB of RAM. Both devices are hit rather hard from the ongoing parts shortage according to Valve, but it still plans to bring the duo out sometime this year.
