Google rolls out big upgrades to AI video generator, Veo

Google has released some rather significant improvements for Veo 3.1, with a lot in store for customers to heavily rely on AI-powered video generation in their workflows.

Google has been working on its AI video generator, Veo, for the past few years now. The company made a lot of waves with Veo 3 back in May 2025, where it revealed its latest model capable of generating relatively more realistic AI videos through little human intervention. Since then, it has upgraded its model further to Veo 3.1, and now, it is ready to bring even more enhancements to its customers.

The ability to make videos with Veo 3.1 image Ingredients has become richer, offering more storytelling options and character consistency across changing scenarios. The same is also true for background images, textures, and objects, which can now be reused across scenes. The firm has made advancements in visual synthesis techniques so you can make a "high-impact" clip through seemingly disparate elements. Examples can be seen in the video below:

Next, Google has prioritized mobile-first video outputs by having the option to generate Ingredients to Video in a 9:16 aspect ratio, which is perfect for vertical (portrait) mobile displays, especially in services like YouTube Shorts. Finally, Google Veo customers can leverage upscaling capabilities for 1080p and 4K video output as well.

Veo customers will be pleased to know that Ingredients to Video is landing on YouTube Shorts and YouTube Create. The same feature, along with portrait output is now available in the Gemini app too. All three enhancements are also rolling out to Flow, Gemini API, and Vertex API.

Keep in mind that while Google is seemingly all-in on AI video generation, it is also working on techniques to identify AI-generated content. One of the ways it does this is my embedding a SynthID digital watermark in all AI content generated through its services and tools. You can even upload a video or image to the Gemini app and ask if it was generated through Google's AI services.
