Google's smart home brand Nest has refreshed its line of security products for 2021. It now offers a range of cameras and doorbells with an option to go wire-free. As per the company, these new gadgets play nice with your existing Nest products and are "fully integrated" into the Google Home ecosystem.
First up is the Nest Cam that now runs on battery. By ditching the permanent power cable, the Nest Cam can be conveniently installed inside as well as outside your home. The device is rated IP54 for water and dust resistance. It holds a 6 Ah battery and ships with a 7.5 W USB-A power adaptor. As per Google, the Nest Cam can go on for months on a single charge.
Going by the design, Google seems to have taken a leaf from Netgear Arlo's book. It comes with a wall mount that magnetically holds the camera. The new Nest Cam has a 2 MP sensor with a 130-degree field of view. It delivers up to 1080p 30 fps streaming over Wi-Fi. To surveil in the dark, the camera is equipped with night vision capabilities along with HDR.
The latest Nest Doorbell also comes with a wireless installation option. Those who opt for the battery-powered installation will get a phone notification whenever someone rings a bell. On the other hand, if you prefer your existing chime, you can go with wired installation. The Nest Doorbell houses a 1.3 MP camera with a 145-degree field of view. It is capable of beaming HD video up to 30 fps. Much like the Nest Cam, the Doorbell offers night vision and HDR.
The new battery-powered Google Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell are each priced at $179.99. According to Google, these security gadgets are up for pre-order in 18 countries including the U.S., Canada, UK, and Australia. Along with these two products, Google stated that the Nest Cam with floodlight and second-generation wired Nest Cam are "coming soon".
