Microsoft and Halo Studios have announced a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved. The Unreal Engine 5 experience touts a brand-new platform, new missions, overhauled graphics, sprint, and much more.

After many months of rumors and leaks, Microsoft today officially announced a remake of the original Halo experience that began it all. The aptly named Halo: Campaign Evolved will be landing as a full remake of the Halo: Combat Evolved campaign from 2001. Continuing Microsoft's multiplatform efforts, for the first time in the series, the game will be arriving on the PlayStation 5 as well.

Built using Unreal Engine 5, the campaign is touting a complete visual overhaul that affects both levels and cinematics. The company shared a playthrough of the seventh campaign mission as part of the reveal today. The developer explained that it has made some tweaks to levels to improve the experience while keeping the nostalgia factor and the actual storyline alive. Check out the gameplay below.

Three fresh missions will be available in the campaign that will serve as a small prequel storyline. While details are sparse, these will feature "entirely new environments, characters and enemies."

The remake is gaining nine new weapons from other titles in the franchise, including the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle and Needle Rifle. Vehicle hijacking is also in, alongside sprinting as an optional addition.

For those that may not be familiar with the setting, here's how Halo Studios describes the experience set in the iconic Ringworld:

After crash landing on a mysterious ringworld known as Halo, the Master Chief is tasked with helping the remaining humans survive against overwhelming Covenant forces. Alongside his AI companion Cortana, he uncovers Halo’s dark secrets and fights to avert the annihilation of all life in the galaxy.

As evident from its name, there won’t be any player-versus-player action included in the package. However, cooperative play will be included. This will land in the form of console-only two-player split-screen play as well as online co-op for up to four players across all platforms.

“We’re so excited about bringing Halo to those who may not have had chance to play it in the past,” said Executive Producer Damon Conn. “At its heart, Halo is about connection, we’re thrilled to meet a new generation of players on their platforms of choice to fall in love with Halo the same way we did. We’re not trying to rewrite Halo’s legacy – we’re trying to immerse you in it like never before.”

Halo: Campaign Evolved is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, Halo Studios did not attach a release date to the project, with it only having a broad 2026 release window at the moment.
