LG's latest handset packs a secret weapon against blood sucking mosquitoes

While not the end of the world, mosquitoes are a bit of nuisance when roaming the outdoors or when they come into the home. LG is introducing a new solution that will arrive with its latest phone.

There have been a lot of interesting smartphones this year, many pushing the boundaries when it comes to design. Although LG has impressed recently with its V30, it appears that firm is taking things a step further with its latest, the K7i.

The K7i is a new device that will arrive in India priced at ₹7,990 or around $122 USD. The handset isn't a beast when it comes to performance and packs a quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 2GB of RAM, and also offer a 5-inch 720p display. The phone also has an 8MP rear camera with flash, front-facing 5MP camera, 16GB of internal storage with expansion via microSD, and a 2,500mAh removable battery. You will be able to charge it via a microUSB port.

What makes this handset more interesting, is that it comes with a built-in mosquito repellent feature called 'Mosquito Away' technology. That is what the massive bump is towards the bottom of the smartphone that you can see in the image. The company claims that it uses ultrasonic sound waves to repel the pesky blood-sucking critters, that means there are no obnoxious tones or odors emitted from the device.

However, it is worth mentioning that the efficacy of ultrasonic waves to deter mosquitoes has been contested, to the point that a review of 10 field studies concluded that they "have no effect on preventing mosquito bites", very much contrary to LG's claims.

There are currently no plans to bring this to other regions.
