Microsoft launches SharePoint mobile app for iOS; Android and Windows 10 apps coming later

Last month, Microsoft shared its roadmap for the future of SharePoint, revealing plans to offer "simple and powerful file sharing on any device", and promising to put "the mobile and intelligent intranet" in your pocket.

Today, the company has taken an important step towards that more mobile future for SharePoint, with the launch of its new app for iOS.

Microsoft says that the new app will help you "keep your work moving forward by providing quick access to your team sites, organization portals and resources, and even a view into what the people you work with are working on".

The app works with SharePoint Online in Office 365, SharePoint Server 2013 and 2016 on-premises and in hybrid environments. It will also let users easily switch between accounts.

The app is organized into four main areas:

  • The Sites tab offers an overview of recent activity, files and assets for each of the sites you follow. As the app is also connected to other Office apps, you can tap on documents, files and other resources to be able to quickly view them.
  • The Links tab provides access to the sites and portals that are available to those in your organization, "curated by your SharePoint admin(s) from the SharePoint home in Office 365".
  • The People tab lets you find colleagues in your organization, and see what they're working on, whether individually, or with others, "based on intelligence powered by Office 365".
  • Search enables users to find content and people "from across your intranet, SharePoint team sites, company portals and the OneDrive for Business folders you have access to, including content recommendations powered by the Microsoft Graph."

The new SharePoint mobile app is available to download now for iOS from the App Store, and you can find out more about getting started with the app via Microsoft's support site.

Of course, those without iOS devices will also be keen to know when they can get their hands on it. Microsoft isn't yet committing to a firm date on that front, but it has said that the SharePoint mobile app is expected to launch on Android, and for Windows 10 devices with a Universal Windows Platform app, "before the end of this year".
