Microsoft's Surface 3 was unveiled just under two years ago, but last year it reached the end of its production run, and eventually sold out in many markets. In the UK, most retailers ran out of stock by the end of 2016; the last model available at Amazon was the 4G LTE version with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage - and even though it was priced £20 higher than its original £499.99 price, the retailer still sold out, with availability subsequently limited to third-party Marketplace sellers.
But you now have the opportunity to buy the same model from Amazon again, and this time around, it costs a good deal less. The Surface 3 with 4G LTE, 2GB RAM and 64GB storage is now available direct from Amazon for £419.99, £80 (16%) below Microsoft's original retail price for the device.
You should think carefully before placing your order, though. The Surface 3 isn't exactly a cutting-edge product these days, and on top of the cost of the tablet, you'll also have to purchase the Type Cover keyboard and Surface Pen separately if you want those accessories, adding £100-£150 to the total cost, depending on the colours you choose and where you buy from.
Rather than spending around over £500 on an ageing Surface 3, Pen and Type Cover, you might want to consider an alternative like the ASUS Transformer Mini, priced at £349.99 from the Microsoft Store. It has a 10.1-inch display, Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage - and the price also includes the cost of the stylus and keyboard. It doesn't include integrated 4G LTE connectivity, but until February 16, it does come with a free one-year Office 365 subscription worth £59.99.
There are plenty of other alternatives to choose from out there besides that, so it's worth reviewing your options before deciding whether or not the Surface 3 is the best option for you.
