PS5 is finally getting Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and it can also work without game support

Sony PlayStation 5

Sony has announced today that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) is finally getting Variable Refresh Rate or VRR support. This is a major announcement as Microsoft has had VRR support on the Xbox Series X since nearly the beginning, and it looks like Sony is finally starting to realize the importance of adaptive sync technology.

However, VRR is not yet here on the PS5 but it will be added "in the coming months". The announcement, which is regarding the software updates for the PS5 and PS4, says:

We’re also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing.

Sony confirms that previously released PS5 games will receive VRR support via patch while future titles will have the technology baked in at launch itself.

There's another delightful revelation today. The company says that an added option will allow users to enable VRR even in titles that don't have the feature built into them. This is also how the FreeSync technology on PC works, as it doesn't require a per-game implementation.

Prior to this announcement, Sony also made sure to add VRR support on its Bravia 2021 models. In a statement to the Digital Trends, the firm said:

Starting March 1, 2022, the following 2021 Bravia XR TVs (X90J, X95J, A80J, A90J, and Z9J) will be receiving a firmware update v6.5660 to support VRR. This is in addition to the X85J and X91J, which were updated November 2021. As with all firmware updates, it will be pushed out to the market in waves, finishing on March 15th. This update will be distributed over-the-air (OTA).
